* I have to take a family member to the airport, so I’ll be gone for a while. Keep your conversation Illinois-centric and please be nice to each other. Also, you might use some of this time to donate to Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. Just sayin…

*** UPDATE *** Ever heard that old saying about how adventures don’t begin until something goes wrong? Yeah, that’s been my entire afternoon. Talk with you tomorrow.

  1. - Give Me A Break - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 12:36 pm:

So Lovie provided Illini fans a new dose of reality and more reasons to wonder if he is the answer.

Now Underachieving and Unprepared Underwood is once again showing the reason he lost more games in one year, last year than any other coach in Illini history.

So, maybe Whitman needs to send another We Will Win email out to the fans.

  2. - A State Employee Guy - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 12:47 pm:

As far as CPD coverups go, this one is downright tame.

  3. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 1:34 pm:

Suggested viewing tonight includes the surprisingly fun-to-watch 8-0 DePaul Blue Demons. Went on the road and thumped Iowa by 25 two weeks ago and then again at Minnesota last week, and should have little trouble tonight against a Texas Tech team that has been pretty good in recent years. Jump on the bandwagon now, before it becomes fashionable again

  4. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 1:35 pm:

The only… only lesson to be learned in the Eddie Johnson fiasco is the Mayor, her Crew… don’t have 3 press conferences and the last one look small and petty.

    Next time?

Next time don’t say anything in front of mics and camera and behind a podium with an ongoing investigation on an individual.

    Get better.

  5. - Earnest - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 1:46 pm:

If you were making a Capitol Fax scavenger hunt for a slightly OCD friend with an interest in labor issues, what would you put on it? So far I have: find a 100+ comment thread; just one of the many posts where RNUG has to explain that he’s not a union guy; one where Rich is called anti-union; one where Rich is called pro-union; a post that mentions AFSCME where Rauner is not mentioned in the comments; a post where comments show a consistent understanding of the difference between the cost of the pensions and the cost of the pension debt (that one’s just to be mean as it doesn’t exist).

  6. - Practical Politics - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 2:26 pm:

Lovie Smith and the Illini look as if they are bound for the Quick Lane Bowl at Detroit’s Ford Field on December 26th.

The stadium is also the home of the Detroit Lions. It is a good venue, but not an ideal location to spend the holidays. Illini fans wanted to bowl somewhere warm.

  7. - thechampaignlife - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 2:40 pm:

To address the concerns about appointments to fill vacancies, we should look to the court system for inspiration. We should impanel a grand jury of sorts from registered voters of the district to fill the vacancy.

  8. - Anyone Remember - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 3:08 pm:

Sun-Times feed has story about a loan Senate President Cullerton got from a bank, one of whose directors is was former State Senator James DeLeo. Cue Kass story in 3 2 1 …

  9. - Steve Rogers - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 3:14 pm:

@Give Me a Break: I’m still holding off on calling for Underwood to be fired. I’m seeing improvement. Last year, being down that much against a team like Miami in the first half, Illinois would have lost by 50. This year, they actually showed some fight. They’re still a very young team, talented, but young. I really hope they mature this year, but I do worry starting out 0-2 in Big Ten play again.

  10. - Dave W - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 3:26 pm:

Illini basketball will be fine. Give Cockburn another month to keep maturing and he will be an unstoppable force in the Big Ten.

  11. - Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 3:26 pm:

I just read that S-T Cullerton piece. Seemed like kind of a nothing burger.

  12. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 3:29 pm:

== We should impanel a grand jury of sorts from registered voters of the district to fill the vacancy.==

That is an excellent suggestion, and I second the motion. Also I say that impartially and not because thechampaignlife is part of the fam.

  13. - Steve - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 3:38 pm:

    - Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner -

The big news in the story is Belmont Bank.

  16. - Huh? - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 5:16 pm:

My family’s definition of an adventure is when you have been:
    1. Cold,
    2. Wet,
    3. Lost,
    4. Hungry,
    5. Arrested,
    6. Risked serious injury, and
    6. Ran the risk of contracting an STD.

  17. - Leslie K - Wednesday, Dec 4, 19 @ 7:02 pm:

OW @ 1:35, I couldn’t agree with that statement more.

And did you notice that she called him “MR. Johnson” in that press conference? Classless. Please start acting like an adult, “mayor.”

  18. - Morningstar - Thursday, Dec 5, 19 @ 8:56 am:

@Earnest: for the scavenger hunt - find a single “open thread” discussion which does NOT include a remark about college or professional athletics in the first five comments.
