Instead of White Sox-Yankees as originally scheduled, if (a big if) we have MLB this year, the Field of Dreams game on Aug. 13 is now scheduled to be Sox-Cardinals. South Side vs. Eastern/Southern/Western Blocs? (Even though I’m a Cardinals fan).

So the City is going to allow the rooftops to open up with fans subject to restrictions while Wrigley Field will still have no fans even on a restricted basis?

  3. - Back to the Future - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 9:48 am:

    Gotta go with them Sox.
I always go for the Cards when they play the Cubs. Of course , I always go for any team that plays the Cubs.

  5. - Chatham Resident - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 9:53 am:

Despite the recent COVID-19 spikes especially out West and in the South (and certainly coming to Illinois), fireworks shows are still on in some Springfield-area communities. Including Chatham, Lake Springfield’s “Rock the Dock,” Pleasant Plains, Sherman, and Edinburg. Albeit with social distancing and spectator restrictions:

    https://www.sj-r.com/news/20200702/rock-dock-area-fireworks-displays-still-on

However, the Springfield Jaycees show in downtown Springfield has been cancelled. Meaning the only fireworks within city limits this weekend will be the neighborhood “amateur hour” variety.

    == Remote learning doesn’t work.==

It’s not ideal, but sending teachers, janitors, office staff, kitchen staff, and others into coronavirus germ factories (aka schools) won’t work either. Every time a school has a case, they’ll have to close it for 14 days, quarantine all kids and staff, and do a deep cleaning. Not worth it. Just skip all the nonsense and do remote learning.

  7. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 10:02 am:

If the current remote learning model isn’t optimal for some students we need to find things that do work for those students. To say it doesn’t work ignores years of evidence it does work. RE: Sesame Street

  8. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 10:08 am:

    Remote learning;

It’s equivalent… but not the same.

Family helping students, whew, parents learned how hard teachers have it.

Why should teachers be in harms way because Covidiots can’t teach kids to wear a mask?

Crying in the night… kids can’t go to pre-school without being potty-trained… ya can’t teach kids to wear a mask… minimum?

Remote learning might not be an option, but the norm, if these numbers in the whole country continue.

    =Remote learning doesn’t work.=

Works great for autodidacts. And it’s much more interesting than sitting in most classrooms. Remember: Interest trumps ability.
CPL has wonderful books and great online resources which can be individualized to accommodate the learner’s interest and ability.
Remote learning also makes it possible to eliminate the deadliest threat to joyful self-motivated exploration and learning……………
test prep, test prep, test prep, test prep…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Back to the Future - From the song “South Side Irish”: “And when it comes to baseball we have two favorite clubs/The Go-Go White Sox and whoever plays the Cubs.”

The way things are trending, I’ll be surprised if we see sports at any level until next year.

  12. - Dotnonymous - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 10:43 am:

what about students who are the offspring of knuckleheaded mask refusenics?…what will happen when they “stand up for their rights” and refuse to distance or wear protective face coverings at School?…What then?

  13. - Back to Clay County - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 10:57 am:

So I hear the Governor and Bailey are back in court at 1pm today in Clay County today. Bailey already has claimed victory and is inviting folks to his campaign office for food and drinks. How is all these Governor’s from other States doing what Pritzker is doing and we never hear about all these lawsuits?

  14. - DownSouth - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 11:04 am:

Fridge went toes up last night/this am. Did not know there was an appliance shortage, especially refrigerators. 3.5 hours of phone calls and web searches in southern IL. Finally found one two towns over (10 miles away) in the local True Value hardware store. Proprietor said next to impossible to get appliances in or keep them in stock since COVID started. We got 1 of his remaining 3 in stock. Who knew there was an appliance shortage? I did not!

===Who knew there was an appliance shortage?===

    Try boat engine parts.

  16. - Huh? - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 11:40 am:

    “Try boat engine parts.”

Fuel pump still not fixed? Would have been nice to be out on the lake this weekend.

  17. - Behind the Scenes - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 11:50 am:

    @ Chatham Resident…
Rock the dock is not allowing on-premise partying or viewing, instead asking people to come by boat. (Giving up a lot of beer sales that night.)

Been listening to the neighborhood amateur hour variety for about two weeks now…

==Giving up a lot of beer sales that night.==

I’m sure the booze sales lost by Rock the Dock will be more than made up by the local gas stations, grocery stores, etc. in liquor sales.

  19. - anonymous springfieldian - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 12:22 pm:

Augie’s is closing. Feed Store is closing. How many more this fall? It’s just sad.

  20. - Captain Obvious - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 1:45 pm:

My fridge went toes up in early march. Will be replaced under warranty but due to covid replacement will not be available till 8/20…maybe. Been using a loaner meantime but wow.

  21. - Chatham Resident - Thursday, Jul 2, 20 @ 1:56 pm:

Comptroller Mendoza has stated that the start of FY2021 will be “more challenging” than the budget impasse, unless federal grants (not loans) arrives. If that help doesn’t arrive, she has said there will need to be “draconian” budget cuts:

Hugh Downs, formerly of 20/20, has passed away at age 99–less than 7 months before his 100th birthday (which would have been next Valentine’s Day).

Larsen’s in Waukegan has all the boat engine parts you want.
