Another great Fall day in Chicago. Did my morning
exercises and look forward to my men’s bible study later this AM.

==”When trees fall down after a short period of time, they become very dry – really like a matchstick … and they can explode,” Trump said as he and others breathed in the smoky, hazy air near Sacramento.==

Exploding trees. Huh, I never knew.

  3. - don the legend - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:19 am:

I meant to tie my comment to last night’s Illinois haze to keep it Illinois-centric. Sorry.

  4. - MSIX - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:21 am:

=I meant to tie my comment to last night’s Illinois haze=

Noticed that, too. Very hazy sun and it cooled things down quite a bit.

  5. - Pundent - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:21 am:

Another exciting win on the south side last night and not without a little 9th inning drama. Let’s hope the momentum carries through the playoffs.

  6. - Nummy yummy - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:24 am:

Big Mike, I like the bible study idea and might be a nice change of pace.

  7. - Kids sports - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:26 am:

Drove thru Chatham and saw full on football, baseball, softball and track practices at high school and middle school.
Won’t need real games to continue the spread, already going on.

  8. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:26 am:

Batinick‘s opponent is running an ad on a property tax “break” Batinick took.

First time I saw the ad.

    Meh.

Pot licenses and the “evaluator” - does anyone have access to the State of Illinois Procurement Portal? Would like to know why the stated reason it was done “no-bid” … thanks.

  11. - Red Ranger - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:37 am:

Every White Sox game feels like a play-off game right now. So intense. So much fun.

  12. - Sayitaintso - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:39 am:

To Don the Legend: watch Band of Brothers episode about the Battle of the Bulge. Plenty of murderous, exploding trees.

  13. - Fav Human - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:42 am:

We often see reports of campaign spending on ads.

    I am VERY curious about:

    1) Percent of spending that a campaign does on Print vs radio vs TV (air and cable) vs digital.

I am seeing more and more political ads especially when I watch YouTube, but I’m told its showing up on Instagram too.

I also wonder if there is any evidence about which sort of spending gives best bang for buck?

  14. - Donnie Elgin - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:47 am:

=Drove thru Chatham and saw full on football, baseball, softball and track practices at high school and middle school=

Those schools are more than likely following IHSA sanctioned guidelines

    September 7 – October 31

Sports that are not in season can have a maximum of 20 contact days for coaches to provide instruction in the
skills and techniques of each sport.

  15. - ChrisB - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:55 am:

Will they pump in boos at Soldier Field when Mitch misses the easy throws?

You know, for the authentic home game experience.

  16. - Stones - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:57 am:

Most fun if had watching the Sox since 2005. The sky is the limit for this team.

  17. - Commonsense in Illinois - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 10:17 am:

    @Don the Legend

Trees can explode, but it’s usually limited to when they’re struck by lightening. Lightening super heats the tree sap quickly and resulting steam release can often times lead to a tree “exploding.” I’ll go out on a limb and say that the intense heat from fires can also cause sap to boil, not as fast as from a lightening strike, and the potential for explosion is there.

Just canceled our subscription to the State Journal-Register, again. This time we got two months on a six month subscription. We missed having a paper but I’m through with this. And papers wonder why they have no subscribers.

  19. - I am Batman - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 10:37 am:

Seems to me that this run on Kilbride is pointless. If I were the IL Dems, I’d redistrict thenIllinois Supreme Court after the census (actually, I would have done it a long time ago). They have the ability to do it; why wouldn’t they? Even if Kilbride loses, that seat ain’t going red.

  20. - I am Batman - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 10:40 am:

In fact, I bet they redraw the Supreme Court map even if kilbride wins. After the census is the perfect time.

  21. - Pizza - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 10:48 am:

I’ll put Pequod’s in a Pepsi challenge any day against that Connecticut stuff. Anyday.

    Honorable Mention: Pie-Eyed Pizzeria. (Chicago)

  22. - BigLou - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 11:05 am:

Anyone see the UofC new about accepting English majors? Thoughts?

  23. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 11:19 am:

I’m not sure I would have announced it BigLou, but I’d make sure all the English Majors read James Baldwin and Octavia Butler.

  24. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 11:24 am:

What we will call the Red Line World Series if it’s played in Texas?

===6 Chicago pizzerias in the top 100===

There are entire swaths of Murrica that would not come close to cracking the top 1,000. We are lucky.

  26. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 11:34 am:

“What we will call the Red Line World Series if it’s played in Texas?”

    The Away Games Series.

“I also wonder if there is any evidence about which sort of spending gives best bang for buck?”

I wonder about this as well. I saw a Biden ad on Chicago’s WCIU and I wondered why. Illinois is solidly blue and Indiana is solidly red.

  28. - JoanP - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 11:50 am:

    @Big Lou and Cheryl44 -

This does not apply to English majors; it applies to graduate admissions.

The statement from the U of C English Department faculty can be found here: https://english.uchicago.edu/

  29. - zatoichi - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 12:04 pm:

@Don The Legend and @CiI - Several years ago two large trees fell over in a ravine behind our property. I better tell the neighborhood kids who play back there about the danger they are in. And to stay off my lawn.

==“What we will call the Red Line World Series if it’s played in Texas?”

    The Away Games Series.==

This might be a crazy thought. But if the Cubs and Sox make the World Series, why not play the World Series at U of I’s baseball field? (Even if it’s not MLB regulation size–but then again, neither is 7-inning doubleheader baseball).

Especially considering the current Region 6 2.4% positivity and 1.4% in Champaign County. And all players and staff will be tested several times daily with UIUC’s new rapid COVID-19 tests.

“I’ll go out on a limb” - Commonsense in Illinois

I’m imagining a thin and brittle limb…don’t put too much weight on it.
