The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 4,015 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 53 additional confirmed deaths. On September 4, 2020, IDPH reported 5,368 new cases of COVID-19 after a slowdown in data processing delayed reporting of some additional aggregate numbers. Cases not reported in the previous several days were included in the September 4, 2020 total. The slowdown did not affect the reporting of positive or negative results to individuals in any way.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 331,620 cases, including 9,127 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from October 9 – October 15 is 4.9%. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 67,086 specimens for a total of 6,531,009. As of last night, 1,932 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 388 patients were in the ICU and 147 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
Starting today, IDPH is including both molecular and antigen tests in the number of statewide total test performed in Illinois. Previously, due to the limited number of antigen tests and limited information about antigen test accuracy, antigen tests were not included in the total number (which comprised less than 1% of total tests performed). Antigen tests, like BinaxNOW™, are now becoming more readily available, therefore, IDPH will include both molecular and antigen tests in its total number of tests starting October 15, 2020.
Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH is now reporting separately both confirmed and probable cases and deaths on its website. Reporting probable cases will help show the potential burden of COVID-19 illness and efficacy of population-based non-pharmaceutical interventions. IDPH will update these data once a week.

Information is constantly being entered into an electronic system and the number of cases and deaths can change as additional information is gathered. Region 3 (Quincy/Springfield) positivity has gone up a full percentage (5.4% to 6.4) between last Friday and Monday (the most recent numbers released today). One to watch.
The city of Springfield among other places need to announce the total shutdown of all bars on Halloween weekend, if not sooner.

I don’t know if they mean the antigent tests are only 1% of today’s total or if they mean historically they’ve only been 1%. If the latter, I hope today’s all-time highest new cases is at least partially attributable to increased testing. Disheartening regardless.

Increased positive test numbers as a stand alone metric are useless. If you test more you will see more positive results. The rate metric is the real concern. If you are testing more but your positivity rate climbs that is the real problem. Seems like 10 days ago IL had a 3.3 positivity rate. 4.9 today.

I can’t see this happening. You hardly hear about any places being checked anymore. Picking up take out bars are back to full capacity with no more social distancing at the Bar area. Winter is going to hit and businesses will be back on outdoor dining. With only themselves to blame.

The way I read the statement about antigen tests was early on they only comprised less than 1% of testing, so they didn’t include them. Now that they have grown in use by an unspecified amount, it is enough that they are relevant.
While as someone else mentioned this wouldn’t account for the increase in positivity rate, but to me this does cloud the data not knowing the percentage of each type of test. Now we have a number that takes into account a rapid results test, and the PCR test which takes days to get results. So of these 4000+ positive tests, how many were from yesterday and how many from 10 days ago?
To the hospitalizations not being this high since mid-June, at least beyond that date the number of ICU patients fell over the next several weeks. I’ll cling to that tiny bit of hope I guess.

You think that’s bad, Region 4 (DuPage/Kane counties) went from a 7-day rolling average of 4.9% on October 5th to 7.0 today.

One day positivity rate of 6 percent statewide.
Public health offcials warned us at the beginning of this and in the early summer months, that unless we cracked down hard on transmissions, did everything we could to wipe out the virus, we were in for a brutal winter.
Instead, we eased restrictions, opened bars and restaurants, restarted sports, invited kids back to college campuses, and reopened schools.
This is the consequence, none of it shocking.
Community transmission is rampant now, in every part of the state. More time spent co-mingling indoors will drive up the R-naught.
The only silver-lining seems to be that stringent crackdowns on non-essential businesses seem to have a pretty quick effect. There is every reason to believe that if we closed indoor bar and restaurant service, gyms, we could beat things back down before Thanksgiving when, frankly, we know a lot of people are going to be spreading the disease.
The goal ought to be to reduce the number who are infectious as much as possible before Thanksgiving.

Shut downs are only as good as the citizens and local officials support. A lot of people are tired and rolling the dice. They are losing. Many local officials refuse to support efforts to mitigate due to politics. As a result we all lose. I don’t think we will listen until we start showing lines of peoples out the hospital doors and trucks holding the bodies. Sorry for the pessimism.

It’s called a second wave, and we’ve been warned about this over and over and over again by public health experts throughout the summer. Now it’s here and people still want to blame testing or whatever.

Love the long tubes being created to shoot the candy out to the kids. Halloween socially distanced. We can do a lot but distanced. Saw pics of the youngest at school. Chairs outside all well over six feet apart and indoors masked and more than six feet so if schools look for a way the kids can do in person. We just need to live creatively instead of whining about what we can’t do.
