Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced on Friday that Illinois’ ban on evictions would be extended until Nov. 22, as state officials continue to send grants to Illinois residents struggling to make ends meet.
Pritzker has extended the ban on evictions four times since he lifted the stay-at-home order at the end of May, when the state began to make significant progress in slowing the spread of the coronavirus.
The state’s ban on evictions will stretch into a seventh month with the governor’s order.
State officials are in the process of notifying those who won grants from a lottery used to distribute more than $300 million in help to landlords and tenants struggling to make ends meet. Funds began to flow on Thursday to those who applied for assistance paying their rent and mortgage, and should be completed by Nov. 10, according to officials with the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

After seeing what landlord friends are going through, they should revise the program so the payments for renters go directly to the landlord.

“go directly to the landlords”… the particular grant I applied for through the state has the payments going directly to the landlords bank accounts. The money must be used to pay back rent.

…Just for clarification…the checks DO go right to the landlords…and you don’t have to have a year lease or any written lease at all to not have to worry about being evicted. Eviction is the only tool landlords have to remove someone occupying their premises, even if it’s an open-ended occupancy…not commenting on the post, just sayin’…

Once cold weather sets in, the courts hold off evictions until spring. A lot of landlords are going to be broke by then.

This will be the sixth month my working tenant will not pay rent then. He ahould have a down payment on a home by now. That will be the only way I will get him out- as it looks like this will drag through the whole winter now,

300 million is a drop in the bucket. Governor’s own and much of the coming foreclosure crisis will be squarely on his shoulders. It’s one thing to assist those in a desperate situation. It’s quite another to stick with a blanket policy that only exacerbates the problem. They’ve had six months to develop a more nuanced approach. Instead they’ve chosen short term political messaging over long term solutions. Help those that need help but don’t pick winners and losers for those that are just out to game the system. This one is not the landlord or the bankers fault. It belongs to the Governor.

@DuPageModerate - I am pretty sure the extended eviction moratorium only applies to residential evictions. I believe commercial landlords regained power to evict a couple of months ago.

Initially I was shocked to discover the amount of contempt that rent seekers have for those that they depend on to take advantage of their ability use capital to purchase residential space that they do not personally need. Especially when those rent seekers had to borrow to obtain that capital and depend on rent seeking to pay the loan back.
It’s cut from the same cloth as employers who refuse to pay more than minimum wage and don’t understand why they can’t find better employees or in some cases anyone willing to work for them.
There are not a lot of people that intentionally chose to not make payments they promise because they can. But perhaps dishonest landlords expect dishonest tenants.

I guess the unemployment numbers, people renting or owning, there’s no housing crunch?
I’m not going to say every decision has been one I’d agree with, housing included, but siding as best with those hurting, and if that’s a majority versus those that may not need the help, the politics to this decision is likely something after, if polled, we’ll get a fairer grasp to the popularity.
The most popular thing would be a plan helping all, and helping landlords with banks, let’s see these 30 days play out.

How long have we heard that federal help was coming?
Those checks for folks, promised 3, 4, maybe 5 times have been stalled… while people are still looking for help, landlords INCLUDED.

Politics is hard, Governing is difficult.
At some point, it’s either relief or break, election results a mere 18 days away might change things.
There’s no road map to this.

The eviction process in illinois takes a minimum 6months. Tenants will not be kicked out anywhere near the end of the year. In chicago its worse thanks to Lightfoot adding an extra 4 month’s to the process-that’s 10 months. Pritzker and every governor in the country is only doing this because they know they can’t take care of the problem, so they have Landlords using their savings to take care of tenants family at the expense of a landlords family. Its not the landlords job to take care of the governors screwup. And kicking the can is just proof of them avoiding their job. There is no money coming anywhere that will take care of over $8,000 in back rent and they know it. Tenants will not pay that rent and they know it.
The eviction moratorium is just ignoring the problem and having a landlord use his savings to deal with it.

Thing is, the way the moratorium is written, it doesn’t matter if the landlord wants to evict you for other reasons even if you are and can afford to pay rent. Its too broad and has enabled many who could pay to flip off their landlords. The moratorium should be limited to just those who cannot pay due to covid.

Low income housing is the biggest loser here. Landlords I know are super conservative with underwriting new tenants. If your record is not perfect, good luck on finding an apartment these days.
