*** UPDATED x2 - Personal PAC weighs in *** Women’s groups now say that new House Speaker must have supported the ERA, HB40 and the RHA

Monday, Jan 11, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Illinois Democratic Women, Illinois NOW, She Votes Illinois, WE WILL, Indivisible Illinois, Chicago NOW, Democratic Women of McDonough County, Lake County Democratic Women and Indivisible Illinois IL9…

With the news of Speaker Madigan suspending his campaign, our coalition recognizes that more candidates may join the race for Speaker of the House. It is our expectation as strong supporters of women’s rights, and especially women’s reproductive rights, that the next Speaker of the House from the Democratic caucus will have supported the ERA, HB40, and the RHA, and is planning to support the repeal of the Parental Notification Act. We cannot go backwards to protecting the rights of women and girls in Illinois.

HB40 was the abortion bill signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner. RHA is the Reproductive Health Act, which passed in 2019.

Just yesterday, the groups were demanding that a woman be elected Speaker.

…Adding… Click here for the roll call on the RHA. And click here for the HB40 roll call. Click here for the ERA roll call. The parental notification bill hasn’t yet been voted on, but click here for a list of sponsors.

…Adding… More groups added to the list…

Men4Choice PAC
Illinois Handmaids
Indivisible Oak Park
Peoria NOW
North/Northwest NOW
Resistor Sisterhood

*** UPDATE 1 *** A buddy of mine went through all three roll calls of the three aforementioned bills. Click here to see his document. Highlighted names voted for all three bills.

…Adding… Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth was inadvertently left off the list.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Terry Cosgrove, President & CEO of Personal PAC…

Almost daily, a pregnant young woman in Illinois is forced to beg a judge in a room full of strangers to “allow” her to seek an abortion, with her only other choices being a self-induced illegal abortion, telling a violent or abusive parent she is pregnant, or becoming a parent against her will and better judgement. This is what Illinois’ dangerous Parental Notice of Abortion (PNA) law does to countless young women across Illinois and why the next Speaker of the Illinois House must publicly commit to play a leadership role in its repeal prior to May 31, 2021. Putting the health and lives of young women at risk for one more day is unacceptable and lacks excuse. The repeal of PNA simply requires striking a few sentences from the state statute, is revenue neutral (actually saves money), and is supported by every mainstream medical and child advocacy organization in Illinois and across the country. The time for leadership is now.

That group raises and spends a ton of money on legislative races.

  1. - Hi there - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 12:57 pm:

No snark here, genuinely curious: is there any potential or current candidate for Speaker that doesn’t fit this criteria?

  2. - Amalia - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 12:58 pm:

interesting to see who this knocks out.

  3. - Harper - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 12:58 pm:

Wouldn’t it be easier to endorse a candidate?

  4. - FIREDup!! - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 12:59 pm:

    This will knock out several….

  5. - Anon y mouse - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:00 pm:

All that soon will be missing is the three rings and tent. Getting my popcorn.

  6. - Southern Skeptic - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:00 pm:

As I understand it, Kelly Burke did not vote for RHA.

  7. - SaulGoodman - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:01 pm:

**is there any potential or current candidate for Speaker that doesn’t fit this criteria?**

Hoffman. K Burke. Maybe a few others that I cannot remember off the top of my head.

    I believe Hoffman, HB40

  9. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:04 pm:

    The cobbling, with whittling, begins…

  10. - Southern Skeptic - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:06 pm:

Hoffman voted no on both and Burke voted present on RHA. This effort is directed at both of them if I had to guess.

  11. - SpiDem - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:10 pm:

Well, the Hoffman boomlet I was hearing over the past 30 minutes was fun while it lasted.

  12. - Perrid - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:12 pm:

    Lots of demands

  13. - Arock - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:16 pm:

Women have had Reproductive Rights long before any abortion bills were passed, these bills only reinforced their ability to end the life of the child they had already produced through their reproductive rights. The truth based on scientific facts that the human life began at conception is one the pro-choice crowd wants to ignore or use terms to dehumanize the unborn child.

  14. - Amalia - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:16 pm:

oooh, how scary, “lots of demands.” 4 demands for women’s rights. lol.

  15. - Not for nothing - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:19 pm:

    Knocks out Burke and Hoffman.

  16. - WaitWait - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:19 pm:

The policy views of the Speaker should not come into play. The Speaker should provide a fair and open environment for debate. The question shouldn’t be would the next Speaker support these bills but would they allow for the opportunity for (and for any legitimate issue of any member of the caucus) have a fair chance of passing. PERIOD

  17. - Prediction - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:20 pm:

    Chris Welch for Speaker

  18. - Ferris Wheeler - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:23 pm:

Looks like the groups are pushing for Cassidy, who is sponsor of atleast two of those bills.

These demands are designed to box out Downstate, black caucus and Latino caucus members, whose districts are more likely to include large numbers of regular church goers.

The Catholic Church had to send a letter saying it’s okay to take the vaccine.

  19. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:24 pm:

===designed to box out Downstate, black caucus and Latino caucus members,===

    Oh, stop.

Get a grip for crying out loud. Look at the chief sponsor for parental notification, for instance.

    Last warning. No mood.

  20. - Anon E Moose - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:27 pm:

“Men4Choice” is odd. Planned Parenthood accepts donations from any gender.

  21. - Hyperbolic Chamber - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:30 pm:

==Just yesterday, the groups were demanding that a woman be elected Speaker.==

Looking at the post from yesterday, the IDW, et al did not demand that a woman be elected Speaker, the encouraged it:
“We… strongly encourage the House Democratic Caucus to choose a woman…” and “We… strongly urge the House Democratic caucus to elect one of them (declared female candidates) as their new Speaker.”

  22. - Suburban Operative - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:33 pm:

I’ll reserve speculation on the House Speakers race to myself. However, just wanted to chime in on my belief that, if Madigan ultimately pulls through and wins another Speaker’s term, he would be one heck of a come-back kid. Another term allows him to end his career on his terms.

  23. - Occam - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:35 pm:

Given the financial crisis facing the state, wouldn’t it make more sense to require a future Speaker to be an accounting major (or at least have taken an accounting class in college)?

  24. - depressed in politics - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:44 pm:

so da Speaker is still viable, seriously tho, it may be an pivot to stake a claim for a solidly pro choice male AND block mod squad like women. let the balkanization begin.

  25. - west wing - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:48 pm:

Lots of qualifications are needed in the next Speaker, but if you’re not mentioning a plan for economic development and energizing the economy, combined with a strong fiscal / budget background, you’re missing some major areas needed in leading the state.

  26. - Ferris Wheeler - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 1:54 pm:

=== Look at the chief sponsor for parental notification ===

It’s a man. They already said the next Speaker should be a woman.

  27. - Fdr Democrat - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 2:00 pm:

What dud HB 40 deal with

  28. - Realtalk - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 2:01 pm:

Madigan supported all of those. IJS.

  29. - Realtalk - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 2:03 pm:

As much as I would like to see a Woman, I’m looking for someone Qualified regardless of gender and someone who is a Yes on Black and Latinx important bills.

  30. - Nagidam - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 2:30 pm:

We still have to hear from the Mod Caucus, The Hispanic Caucus, and the Downstate Caucus. I’m sure I only have Half of them listed.

  31. - nadia - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 2:40 pm:

Madigan had 51 votes everyone else just over 20. What will be the required qualifications of the 51? (some snark intended)

  32. - SweetLou86 - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 3:01 pm:

Gordon-Booth voted yes on all 3 of those bills as well, though she wasn’t highlighted on your friend’s doc

  33. - Southern Skeptic - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 3:05 pm:

“Madigan had 51 votes everyone else just over 20.”

51 ain’t 60. Others have growth potential. Tell me about the growth potential of Mike Madigan.

  34. - Perrid - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 3:14 pm:

It’s amusing to me that Madigan meets their demands. So do Welch and Williams, though.

While I agree 100 percent that all these qualifications are needed you are leaving out the other side of being Speaker. In which some people, myself included, think is more important. That is getting dem members elected. And then after that he or she will need to get 60 of them to vote on what is needed.

  37. - AlexandraEidenberg - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 3:50 pm:

As the Founder of WE WILL and IL State Chair of Vote Mama I am deeply proud to participate in our broad coalition and urge for a 100% Pro-Choice FEMALE Speaker of the house. This is an exciting and important time in Illinois and I am hopeful that the house will choose a Woman to lead them. It is time. Let’s do this!

  38. - It Is Time. - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 5:08 pm:

There is much grassroots organizing power behind the groups signing these statements. Illinois lawmakers rely upon them when they want something, and then grow forgetful when it matters. We don’t need “more of the same” or a Speaker who is anti-choice. We had to fight to get a vote on the RHA even though the advocacy groups knew we had the support to pass it. It is time for the leadership Statehouse to reflect the electorate - and that means choosing a pro-choice woman to lead. We have great choices. Pick one.

  39. - Touré's Latte - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 6:45 pm:

Do these requirements knock out Madigan? No.

  40. - Essential State Employee - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 8:02 pm:

Shouldn’t Hoffman never have been considered for Speaker to begin with due to being closely allied with Blago before and during the 1st Public Official A’s administration?

  41. - It Is Time - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 8:12 pm:

    @Toure’s Latte

Madigan does not have the votes. In his absence, the advocacy groups demand a pro-choice woman be called forth to lead.
