* I know I’m coming a bit late to this, but we were slightly busy yesterday with actual Illinois news. Anyway, I searched my email in-box for the word “impeach” and here’s what I found. Gov. Pritzker…
For the first time in United States history, a sitting President has been impeached on two separate occasions by the House of Representatives – a testament to the resiliency of our Constitution, but an ugly stain on our nation’s history,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Make no mistake: to hold accountable those who smear our democracy, who unleash violence and death upon the halls of Congress, who dance on the desks of duly elected public servants in the name of insurrection – and yes, those who incite it all from inside the world’s most powerful office – is the most patriotic thing we can do.
We cannot rebuild without ridding ourselves of what’s rotten. We cannot hope to unify without upholding the ideals of justice, democracy and liberty that tie us together as one nation. Today, Republicans joined with Democrats to send that message.
The events of January 6th, 2021 – and the weeks’, months’ and years’ worth of falsities and fantasies that led up to them – represented a culmination of Donald J. Trump’s longstanding efforts to channel hate and demagoguery into power. As a proud American, I have long feared the repercussions of these efforts, and the choice of the national Republican party to embrace them and its media ecosystem to amplify them. He has long posed a danger to our nation – and last week, the world watched in horror as his name was carried on flags – alongside the flag of our nation’s most infamous traitors, the Confederacy – in a siege on our Capitol. And I believe fully that we would be remiss to assume the threat of such efforts lies behind us.
But today, amid sorrow, amid worry, amid the bruising impact of a pandemic on pace to soon take over 400,000 American lives: I am hopeful. By impeaching President Trump on the charge of Incitement of Insurrection, the House of Representatives has taken a necessary step toward holding accountable a president whose very hallmark has been the derision of our democracy. In the constant pursuit of our nation’s finest ideals, the promise of a more perfect union lives another day. Our work to secure it continues, and I urge the Senate to take up its duty immediately.

“Process matters. A snap impeachment conducted without a full investigation or without due process for the president accomplishes nothing. At a time when political tensions are at an all-time high, impeachment will drive people further into their corners and could lead to additional violence. Unlike what some Democratic leaders are saying, President Trump will not be removed from office under this process. The Democrats’ stated goal to punish the president and bar him from seeking federal office in the future certainly isn’t urgent. He will be removed from office under the law in less than one week. We need to lower temperatures, not enflame them. If, when a full accounting of the facts of January 6th comes in, Pelosi and the Democrats wish to punish President Trump, they can pursue that process with their party’s total control of the legislative and executive branches of the federal government.

I commend the Democratic and Republican members of Congress who voted to impeach President Trump for launching the attack on our Capitol and the shameful insurrection that threatened our democracy. Republican Rep. Liz Cheney’s words that “There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution” should be on the minds of all Republican senators as they vote. Removing Trump from office should be the easiest vote they ever take. No one, including the president, should be above the law. He must be held accountable.

I have not been a fan of Rep. Rodney Davis in the past but I appreciate his comments calling out the irresponsible GOPers who misled their own people by saying the election was stolen and gave them false hope about overturning the election. I have a college-educated Trump-voting family member who I may send these comments to in the hopes hearing this message from an elected Republican may get through the fog of disinformation this person gets bombarded with on a daily basis.
That said, I wish the gratitude Rep. Rodney Davis feels toward law enforcement extended to the poor souls manning the metal detectors at the House floor. Even if Rodney disagrees with those being implemented at the direction of Speaker Pelosi, I hope going forward he directs that ire solely to her and never again hassles the Capitol police just trying to do their job.

Trump should have been removed with the 25th Amendment long ago - it’s clear he has clinical narcissistic personality disorder, as a cursory read through the DSM-5 would show (or at least tell someone he needed to be evaluated). Doing so at this moment in time would create a dangerous civil war within the White House and wouldnt’ remove him prior to Biden’s inaugural, and I have mixed feelings about a rushed impeachment trial. Wait out the week, have the trial later (though it may be true that the Constitution prohibits this after he leaves office - scholars seem split on this). Let Biden focus on COVID.

I have no issue with the House vote to impeach. Trump deserved it. However, by the time the trial begins in the Senate, Mr. Trump will be out of office due to his term expiring.
A trial will not in my opinion heal this nation. The last impeachment trial intensified opinions on both sides of the issue. A new trial will most assuredly do the same thing.

The short term benefit of the delayed Senate trial is that it may make Trump afraid to pardon himself and his family. Abusing the pardon power could shift Republican votes against him.
Republicans have to purge themselves of the Trump authoritarians. Conviction in the Senate would be a start.
The Republican Party in Illinois needs to find its way back to the middle. The incumbent Republican politicians may not be able to get there. Certainly not on their own.
Maybe an alliance of big money donors can recruit candidates and elect competent moderates. In a different era I think that is how we got Senator Percy.

Andlastly, shows some pretty good size ladders. I guess those people got an advance copy of Trump’s speech and got their “incitement” ahead of time. Or maybe, they intended to have a riot and skipped Trump’s rally entirely. Not saying they weren’t supporters, just that you can’t blame his words that they weren’t around to hear.

Someone needs to make it crystal clear Mike and Rodney and the rest of the IL GOP that things don’t work like that any more. If dems have to answer every time a member of antifa or blm sets fire to a Wendy’s or throws a bottle of water at a cop, then they need to answer for it when their supporters beat a cop to death with a fire extinguisher and smear feces on the walls of the US Capitol building.

I’ve been around long enough to have seen a few things in our country. For awhile, we couldn’t go too long without someone being assassinated. We’ve been in several unpopular and unnecessary world conflicts. The economy has been in the dumps on several occasions. We’ve always had challenges in this country. While it may be the freshness of recent events, I don’t know that I’ve seen a time of greater discourse, where people on both sides of the political aisle speak with hatred for their fellow citizens. I don’t know where it’s going, but I hope those entrusted with power have a plan. Otherwise violence will be the new norm.

That’s not the purpose of a trial. We have trials to hold people accountable. It is the means of ensuring responsibility for those that take none on their own. It’s to deter those that may have similar ideas from acting on them.
But if what you really want is healing there is a way to accomplish that. Encourage the President to accept responsibility and resign. Have him admit that his words and actions were ‘totally inappropriate’ and acknowledge that when people look at them ‘they’ agree. Spare the country the division and consequences of an impeachment trial and allow a legitimately elected President to repair the damage and restore our belief in democracy.
