I just want everyone to pop over and read this bill filed by a Trumpy Virginia House of Delegates member, which would ban the usual stuff, and would also mandate teaching important US founding documents (jump down to section B, point 3), including “the first debate between Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.”

… because that’s definitely who Lincoln was running around Illinois debating.

Does SB 1751 have any chance of going anywhere? It seems that an amendment prevents any pet rescue or shelter from conducting background checks on any potential rescuer. I can’t even imagine why someone wants this.

  3. - OneMan - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:00 am:

Looking forward to taking a drive down to Ottawa to visit the site of the first Lincoln - Frederick Douglas debate.

  4. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:05 am:

Springfield and points westward and northwestward will get at least 3-5 inches of snow tonight and early tomorrow, and even more the closer to Iowa and Missouri that you get.

So thankful I live in Chatham where snow removal even for minor snows is superb (unlike in Springfield).

  5. - Nefarious Veneer - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:22 am:

Bothanspied … wow. I doubted you but went and read the language. HA2 to SB1751.
Looking forward to people convicted of dog fighting, animal cruelty, etc testifying in support.

    Weird.

  6. - Amalia - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:28 am:

so Florida Gov wants teachers with mics so parents can hear what is being taught. and in Poland there is an anti teaching effort ongoing. the global effort against facts is concerning.

  7. - Moral Minority - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:36 am:

It seems that a good deal of ignorance exists in the Old Dominion State. Unfortunately, if this bill passes, which is hopefully unlikely, it will only be increased by schools being mandated to teach using specific materials that don’t exist.

  8. - WestBurbs - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:40 am:

I sent that VA bill to my history teacher daughter last night - she lauged hysterically while confirming that the anti-CRT crowd is no laughing matter. (Note she is by no means a CRT proponent; she just wants to teach all of history with as little slant/bias as possible)

  9. - DownSouth - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:44 am:

Rep. Friess has filed legislation to exempt fishing tournaments and formally recognized Friends groups from DNR’s Permit to Sell requirements. Friends groups are already exempt from the fees. Felt like a bit of a deja vu moment given that last year he filed legislation seeking to exempt vendors at the WSRC from having to participate in the state procurement process. Here we go with the rules apply to thee but not me business again.

  10. - cermak_rd - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:44 am:

at this point in time I think we should just punk the students by teaching them a scrambled version of history. Washington was fighting the Nazis and Lincoln the Roundheads meanwhile Garfield had to fight off the hordes–literally the Mongolian hordes.

If nothing else it could make dinner time conversation about what you learned in school today more interesting.

  11. - cermak_rd - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:51 am:

I mean, it’s not like I didn’t get a very, very sanitized version of American History. I, over time, and as a result of my own curiosity, have learned a lot about the atrocities (other than slavery–the big one) toward African Americans. But there are a couple of Native American educators I follow on Twitter and I am blown away by some of the things done to them, and some of them more recent than 1900, even. I followed up and found the historical trail, too, so I know these folks are not lying.

If we’re going to teach fake, one-sided history why teach it at all? Use that time for teaching more math or computer science or something useful for the careers the students will have some day.

  12. - Michelle Flaherty - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 9:59 am:

Lincoln’s greatest accomplishment was the defeat of the vampire plot to takeover America.

And yet we don’t teach that in our schools.

    Ever wonder why.
Who wouldn’t want you to know?

Yeah. This is way bigger than Virginia.
    Way.
    Bigger.

  13. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 10:12 am:

The former Perry County Fair treasurer has been accused of defrauding over $100K in funds from the fair from 2012-2018. Including for Star Wars pajamas:

  14. - fs - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 10:20 am:

Very true, Michelle Flaherty. Very true. You would think New Salem would at least have a plaque or something to recognize it. But, sadly, they do not.

  15. - SAP - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 10:21 am:

I’m old enough to remember when people understood that asking “Was it over when the Germans bomber Pearl Harbor?” was a joke.
Not sure that our friends in the Commonwealth of Virginia would understand that one.

  16. - Moral Minority - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 10:29 am:

Seems to be some controversy over the brother-in-law of our own GOP gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey here in Louisville:TENSION AT LOUISVILLE VILLAGE BOARD MEETING http://wnoi.com/onlinenews/wnoinews.exe?ID=43971

  17. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 10:37 am:

    - Michelle Flaherty -

You continue to make your comments “so” must-read.

    The hilarity… (chef kiss)

History is lost in those willing to repeat it or repeat the ridiculously untrue to it.

Agree with - OneMan - I’ll also head to Ottawa, this weekend, maybe they have that vampire tour running while I’m there too.

  18. - Downstate - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:22 am:

What do you expect from Virginia? They tolerated a black faced governor.

The real story on national education is the fact the Biden administration collaborated with the National School Board Association to send a letter to the FBI as justification for labeling parents as “domestic terrorists”. Is anyone really okay with that?

  19. - Steve Rogers - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:25 am:

And here I thought the Lincoln-Douglas debates were when Lincoln told Kirk Douglas to begin a slave revolt to be led by Spartacus and his fellow gladiators. Silly me.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:26 am:

=== The real story on national education is the fact the Biden administration collaborated with the National School Board Association to send a letter to the FBI as justification for labeling parents as “domestic terrorists”.===

You see those tactics as acceptable?

    Huh.

    Learning more and more.

It’s also been seen that alt-groups as packing school board meeting to disrupt meetings and intimate boards. However, at least in Illinois, when those types are in the ballot for school boards, as an example, they haven’t had success at the ballot box.

  21. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:41 am:

    - Downstate -

Gotta be honest, for a person who openly mocked child molestation and the victimhood to it, when you wade into these things, I don’t think your take is at all that genuine.

  22. - Downstate - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:43 am:

    OW,
Why do you think the DOE would need to use an outside organization to label parents as “terrorists”?

  23. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:43 am:

Either get back to Illinois or get out.

  24. - Downstate - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:45 am:

    Rich,
“Either get back to Illinois or get out.”

Noted. I saw the early reference to Virginia and Education, and wanted to weigh in on that topic.

  25. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:46 am:

=== Why do you think the DOE would need to use an outside organization to label parents as “terrorists”?===

You think the tactics of some during these times are acceptable?

It’s been written about how this is… evolving…

    shorturl.at/fjyLY

“Proud Boys Regroup, Focusing on School Boards and Town Councils”

In an overall, an overall, it’s not “concerned parents” driving this, it appears.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:47 am:

    Rich,

    Apologies.

  27. - Galway Bay - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:51 am:

    Go Sox

  28. - Pundent - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 11:59 am:

All of this other talk is a distraction from the excitement we should have going into wild card weekend. What’s that? Oh, never mind.

  29. - Teddy Salad - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 12:05 pm:

    Prudent;
I have heard legends of this so called “wild card weekend”
But as a Bears fan I am relatively sure it does not exist.

  30. - Downstate - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 12:09 pm:

After attending Monday night’s College Football Playoff event in Indy (Lucas Oil Stadium), the idea of dome stadium for Chicago seems to be an absolute necessity.

Chicago is a world class city. We need a year-round world class sports venue.

  31. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 1:49 pm:

==I have heard legends of this so called “wild card weekend”

Bears had a bad wild card experience 3 years and 8 days ago.

  32. - Jibba - Friday, Jan 14, 22 @ 1:59 pm:

    On another front, good news:

From WaPo: Chief Judge Frank McCartney of the Eighth Judicial Circuit assigned Adams County Judge Robert Adrian to small claims, legal matters and probate dockets and other civil cases
