  1. - Local Person - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:08 pm:

    Matt Martin

  2. - GH - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:13 pm:

    McCheese

  3. - cermak_rd - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:15 pm:

I’d say Tom Dart, except he’s been such a good sheriff I’d hate to lose him.

  4. - Moe Berg - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:17 pm:

    Tom Dart.

He has the ability to appeal to the SW and NW sides’ cops/firefighter contingents, has credibility when it comes to community safety and law enforcement issues (possibly the top issue for city voters in 2023), has done a lot to reform the practices of Cook County jail, particularly when it comes to mental health issues, and has extensive government experience as a state legislator and sheriff. Unlike the incumbent, he knows how to work with people and is thoughtful, which would appeal to the lakefront policy-oriented voters.

  5. - DuPage Saint - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:22 pm:

I think the list of those who should not but will is much longer than those who should. And I did not think Tom Dart lived in Chicago proper.

  6. - Back to the Future - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:22 pm:

Not sure I am up to speed on all the announced candidates, but of the group I have heard about- - - Pat Quinn.
Been Governor and he is a genuinely nice guy.
I know he has a bit of mileage on those legs, but seems he still has gas in the tank and he has a big base in the city that believes in honest and competent government.

As the bumper stickers before the 2020 election said: “Any Functioning Human”

  8. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:24 pm:

Truly a tough question if you take the question at face vale and be honest with an answer.

There seems, as of late, to these comparisons to NYC and LA, with their millionaire/billionaire “philanthropist/business rising star finding the stage in both towns, and Chicago is still a closed shop, at the mayoral level, not because “Dem Machine” mythologies or silly political straw men, it’s that Chicago… New York has the 5 Boroughs and Los Angeles has that odd hybrid city/county/region thingy where it’s not cohesive… like 50 fiefdoms, 50 wards, 77 neighborhoods, factions and legions… and if ya ask around… in nearly every business… “well, Chicago is just a different animal all together”

You look at the great (and I mean great) races for the 5th floor.

Richard M losing to Byrne… Harold Washington… Rahm runS… even the race that gave us Lightfoot… the small but incredibly overshadowing nuances… Chicago is largest small town you’ll ever visit, see, or live

    Who should run?

Alderman to the 5th Floor… “when was that last time, not appointed…”

County commissioner? Is there a person that has bridged enough neighborhoods?

None of the County-Wides… why leave congress to run the 3rd largest city… this ain’t the job Rahm called “one of the top 5 jobs in politics” in the least anymore.

    Who should run?

Is there a labor leader out there that can rally neighborhoods better than Lightfoot?

    Who should run?

Can’t beat someone with no one… where is that someone?

I dunno. But if Chicago finds it’s “billionaire philanthropist businessman”, it’s likely not someone we know today.

    Darren Bailey

  10. - E - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:26 pm:

@DuPage Saint I think Tom Dart lives in Mt. Greenwood.

  11. - Original Rambler - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:27 pm:

This is a terrific question considering all the current announced candidates. A good administrator like Dan Hynes. I wish Mendoza had not run 4 years ago.

  12. - Moe Berg - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:28 pm:

==And I did not think Tom Dart lived in Chicago proper.==

He does. You can verify it on the Cook County Clerk’s candidate filing page.

  13. - Nick - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:29 pm:

    I should run for mayor

  14. - lake county democrat - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:30 pm:

I like Lightfoot, despite her flaws, but if I had to nominate an opponent I’d say Susana Mendoza. She’s performed well in her current office, is smart, has courage, though I worry about her independence from the Madigan/Berios/Burke cabal

  15. - Reg2023 - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:31 pm:

The only candidates that would have a chance is a county-wide elected woman. One that voters will actually believe when they say they will reduce crime. Maria Pappas or Iris Martinez.

  16. - Benjamin - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:35 pm:

    Another vote for Dart.

Mike Quigley would also have been a good one–solidly progressive, but also knowlegdable about the nuts and bolts of governing, and not the kind of guy who picks fights. Still, I get that he doesn’t want to lose a safe and predictable job as congressman for the roller coaster that is the Chicago mayor’s office.

  17. - vern - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:40 pm:

I’d love to see Ram Villivalam take a shot

  18. - A Real Chicagoan - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:42 pm:

Folks who don’t live in the city are going to be suprised to find out exactly how unpopular (and even hated) this mayor is. She has been a uniquely unlikeable person. On top of that she has made it her business to try to antagonize every neighborhood and constituency.

  19. - Google Is Your Friend - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:42 pm:

Brendan Reilly. We’ve got a few massively egotistical grass bowls already running, why not one more?

  20. - levivotedforjudy - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:43 pm:

    Mendoza (1) Dart (2) Pappas (3) Vallas (4)

  21. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:47 pm:

    To answer the question posed;

    Dart or Pappas

The question is “should”, not “will”

With “should”, it’s Dart or Pappas.

  22. - McGuppin - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:50 pm:

Mike Quigley should run, but I don’t think he will. Tom Dart should run, but I don’t think he will. Kam Buckner should run. but i don’t….oh wait he is running. Got my vote.

OW - That was a lot of word w/o a name. Who you got?

  23. - McGuppin - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:51 pm:

    Got it….NVM

  24. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:51 pm:

    - McGuppin -

    “See Above”

    Be well.

  25. - Reg2023 - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:52 pm:

With lightfoot being the only woman officially in the race, there is no chance a man can win with the current slate. Look at who City voters elected in all 3 races in 2019- women of color. I do not know anything about ald. sophia king, so hoping to learn more.

  26. - Telly - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 3:56 pm:

I think Dart “should” run, too. But like almost all Chicagoans with political gravitas, he’s smart enough to know it’s an awful job that would chew him and his family up — so he won’t run.

Of the second tier candidates whose names have been floated and might actually run (and that’s all there are right now — second tier candidates,) I like Tom Tunney. He understands the business community and has progressive street cred. Also grew up on the South Side and now represents the North Side — good balance.

  27. - Just Sayin - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 4:01 pm:

==Not sure I am up to speed on all the announced candidates, but of the group I have heard about- - - Pat Quinn.==

If PQ runs I wonder what the over-under is on how long it takes before LL dusts off the old Harold Washington “Quinn is incompetent” video.

  28. - MisterJayEm - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 4:01 pm:

    “Who should run for mayor?”

    Katie Tuten.

  29. - Huh? - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 4:13 pm:

Don’t know. Don’t care. Can’t vote for them anyways.

Marie Newman would make a great candidate and could use it as a launching pad to governor in 26, VP in 28, and President in 32 or 36.

  32. - Commissar Gritty - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 4:30 pm:

I’m outing my friend here but stating that Nuke The Whales would be both eligible and qualified to run for mayor.

  33. - Been There - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 4:35 pm:

====Marie Newman would make a great candidate and could use it as a launching pad to governor in 26, VP in 28, and President in 32 or 36.====
Considering she doesn’t live in Chicago and never has that trajectory to the White House isn’t the correct path.

  34. - Chicago's Finest - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 5:01 pm:

    ===Mendoza (1)===

Not likely considering she got 5th in 2019 and has accomplished nothing of note since.

  35. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 5:03 pm:

    ===accomplished===

    Still the Comptroller.

    Paid down the backlog.

    Likely winning statewide… again

  36. - James - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 5:09 pm:

    Mendoza, Quinn, Quigley, Sawyer

  37. - Vato - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 5:10 pm:

    Carrie Nation

  39. - Edgewater Elliot - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 8:35 pm:

@vern Ram Villivalam running is an interesting idea. Some new blood would be nice and he is pretty progressive.

  40. - People’s Republic of Oak Park - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 9:09 pm:

    Fran Hurley.

  41. - Candy Dogood - Monday, Aug 8, 22 @ 10:13 pm:

I’m not sure I would wish the office of Mayor of Chicago on anyone I hold in high esteem. OW is probably right with Dart or Pappas, but I am always optimistic that someone might rise to the occasion.

  42. - Big Tent - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 6:16 am:

    ===”Totally untrue,” Pritzker says.===

Yeah…like he’s not running for President either.
Who wouldn’t want control of the Mayors office of Chicago during a national campaign?

  43. - "A Horse is a Horse" - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 9:39 pm:

    Lisa Madigan

  44. - Lynn S. - Wednesday, Aug 10, 22 @ 12:39 am:

I tried to convince my son to run 4 years ago, when he was living in Chicago. (I told him I would be happy to serve as his Director of Voter Engagement.)

Son turned down the opportunity, using some language Rich would be unhappy with.

Son will be starting grad school in a few weeks, out of state.
