The town takes its name from the Greek, Xenos, which roughly means, “hospitality to strangers”. It was based on a belief adopted by early Christians that strangers were to be treated even better than family, because any stranger who shows up could in fact be a god, like Zeus, who had a habit of disguising himself and visiting mortals quite regularly. Thus his full name, Zeus Xenios, “Zeus, Protector of Strangers. You see where I am going here, Right? Xenos is where we get the Word “xenophobia,” fear of strangers. It has in fact created real challenges in the labor market that relies on immigrant workers. We are a country built on immigrants and we can all trace our lineage back to grandparents that immigrated to this country from elsewhere. Now many of those people may have been of European descent. And that seems to be the unspoken part of many of these complaints. They simply don’t like the where these immigrants are coming from.
