Chamber backs Mendoza

Monday, Oct 3, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Crain’s early this morning

The Illinois Chamber of Commerce doesn’t endorse too many Democrats for statewide office, but they’re backing incumbent Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza for a new term.

* Press release…

The Illinois Chamber of Commerce is backing Susana Mendoza for another term as Illinois Comptroller. She is the only Democratic nominee for a constitutional office to receive their endorsement in the 2022 general election cycle. They issued the following statement in support of her campaign:

“The Illinois Chamber is proud to endorse Susana Mendoza for another term as State Comptroller. She approaches her job with a tenacious zeal for fiscal integrity and a bipartisan reach. Illinois is not out of the fiscal woods by a long shot, but voters from both parties should rest assured that Susana is the right person to take on the difficult tasks ahead to protect our State’s finances and taxpayers’ checkbooks.”

Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza issued the following statement in response to their endorsement:

“I am so honored to receive the Illinois Chamber of Commerce’s endorsement. I analyze and care deeply about how every policy we consider at the state level affects Illinois’ businesses. All the hard work I’ve done as Comptroller to eliminate the bill backlog, deliver the fastest vendor payment cycle in decades, lead out state to 6 credit rating upgrades, and replenish the state’s Rainy Day Fund and Pension Stabilization Funds, has been to get Illinois ready for its growth spurt. I take pride in my bi-partisan approach to governing and appreciate that the Illinois Chamber of Commerce recognizes my efforts on behalf of all Illinois residents and businesses.”

The Chamber’s PAC had just $41K in the bank at the end of the last quarter. It’s reported raising just $8K since then. But money isn’t the issue here. It’s the press pop and the fact that Mendoza can tout it in her own paid media.

Susana Mendoza is by far the best person who has ever held the position of comptroller in Illinois.

Probably still the best even when including those who held the office back when it was called Auditors of Public Accounts.

  2. - New Day - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 10:08 am:

Looks like my comment is being held for moderation, probably because I used a banned word. So let me rephrase.

She’s doing a great, nonpartisan job and her opponent is “special” and not running a real campaign. That said, this just gives the Chamber the ability to say that they backed a Democrat whenever anyone attacks them as partisan GOPers.

  3. - Central Ill - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 10:08 am:

Without exception the best politician in the state of Illinois. Always focused on the core objectives and stays out of the mudslinging.

  4. - supplied_demand - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 10:12 am:

She is a star, what is her next move? Governor or Senator in 2026?

  5. - hisgirlfriday - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 10:19 am:

It’s her name that’s prominent on the paperwork for the rebate checks going out to Illinois taxpayers just a couple months before election. Smart move, Chamber.

  6. - hisgirlfriday - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 10:22 am:

Also was just thinking the other day how lucky us Illinoisans are that Chicago foolishly rejected her for mayor in 2019.

  7. - lol - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 10:27 am:

It’s funny because most of those accomplishments regarding state finances she lists are thanks to JB, but they would never endorse him.

  8. - Give Me A Break - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 10:35 am:

She gets a huge amount of credit for helping keep the doors of a lot human service providers open during the Rauner years.

To this day, her staff understand the issues human providers face when dealing with payment and voucher issues and go out of their way to help.

Mendoza and her staff just “get it”.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 10:42 am:

What Mendoza is the polar opposites of Rauner and Munger, personified in a way that what her office does is a reflection to who she is.

Rauner and Munger tried that and being so personally connected to policy hurt, as they both hurt so many.

It’s this type of endorsement where you see how policy, personality, and the power to bring both to create a record… odds are if you’re good, good will be rewarded.

  10. - TJ - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 11:04 am:

When even the Chamber isn’t willing to endorse a Republican candidate, you know that the state GOP is on some deep trouble.

That’d be akin to the ACLU endorsing a Republican.

  11. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 11:04 am:

One 4 year term of Rauner and one two year term of Munger during a period of divided government destroyed the State’s finances?

We are supposed to forget which party failed to pass a balanced budget for the Governor to sign and who had total control of the state for the previous 12 years?

Susan Mendoza was in the legislature and voted for a decade of unbalanced budgets.

  12. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 11:09 am:

=== One 4 year term of Rauner and one two year term of Munger during a period…===

Equated ZERO budgets, purposely hurting social services, the most needy, refusing to fully fund higher education

The Owl said it best, to paraphrase

He was frustrated too but taking steps to reform Illinois was MORE IMPORTANT (emphasis added) than a short (translation: an entire seated General Assembly, 2 fiscal years) term budget “stalemate”

The stalemate was Dems were suppose to first gut organized labor protections and Rauner would allow Dems, likely on their own, to raise taxes.

    Please keep up.

=== We are supposed to forget which party failed to pass a balanced budget for the Governor to sign and who had total control of the state for the previous 12 years?===

(Insert Charlie Wheeler “truth rebuttal” here, for the 7,296th time for - Lucky Pierre-)

  14. - Suburban Mom - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 11:12 am:

Remember that time she got in Johnny “Quarters” Boyle’s face after a hit and run, and then filmed him leaving the scene?

    That was awesome.

  15. - Bad Goya Vitch - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 11:12 am:

==She’s doing a great, nonpartisan job and her opponent is “special”…=

And your initial comment was banned for using a derogative? Hmm, I wonder which one and why?

Deirdre McCloskey (L) is a well-known economist and Shannon Teresi, CPA (R) is the McHenry County Auditor.

  16. - Demoralized - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 11:13 am:

==One 4 year term of Rauner and one two year term of Munger during a period of divided government destroyed the State’s finances?==

You are such a dishonest person it is unbelievable. No one has said that they were solely responsible for state government’s entire financial situation. What Rauner was though was responsible for making the situation infinitely worse. And if you can’t acknowledge that as a fact then you are truly one of the biggest liars around.

  17. - oof - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 11:16 am:

    @ Central Ill

Best politician in IL? Not so sure about that. That 2019 campaign… yikes

  18. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 11:38 am:

Sorry Demoralized you must be new here.

Again you fault the Republicans for the budget impasse exclusively.

Maybe you can cite a single post from OW that blames the Democrats for the State’s finances

  19. - TM - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:00 pm:

I’m a fan of Mendoza. She’s done a great job. But I wonder if she is her generation’s Jesse White — popular in the job she has, but not so much if she looks to step up. Her mayoral flame out was a real eye-opener. She was the biggest underachiever in that field by far, probably because of her close ties to Burke and Madigan. She’s still relatively young, so maybe with time the damage of those associations will fade, but I wonder.

  20. - Colors of Fall - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:04 pm:

I will still vote for her even though the echo chamber’s endorsement of her.

  21. - lolol - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:16 pm:

@lol: ==It’s funny because most of those accomplishments regarding state finances she lists are thanks to JB, but they would never endorse him.== It’s funny because most of those accomplishments regarding state finances JB claims credit for on his ads are thanks to Mendoza and she had started on them before he took office, but he doesn’t credit her. There, fixed it for ya.

  22. - twowaystreet - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:20 pm:

I think Mendoza would do well to stay at the Comptroller’s office for a long while, maybe her entire career. I think she has the ability to secure broad support that rivals Jesse White’s popularity.

I’m not trying to say she’s at that level yet or that popularity could translate to a different office if she has ambitions take another go at Mayor, a different statewide office, or federal office.

Also, people in the comments need to take a closer look at all her office’s transparency work. They make it a point to make information accessible and easy for everyday people make heads or tails of. A lot of other agencies should be taking notes.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:21 pm:

    ===can cite a single post from===

    Frerichs posts

Please add to this discussion - LP - and stop being a comic book type of phony.

    “Moving on”

  24. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:31 pm:

    - LP -

===The Owl said it best, to paraphrase

He was frustrated too but taking steps to reform Illinois was MORE IMPORTANT (emphasis added) than a short (translation: an entire seated General Assembly, 2 fiscal years) term budget “stalemate”===

    The Owl tattled.

It was Rauner’s want. Your beef is with The Owl.

The stalemate was purposeful by Raunerites. It was the purposeful leverage.

Mendoza has been a big part of the recovery after the devastation of Rauner.

  25. - Urban Girl - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:43 pm:

She has been amazing. She is youngish, and I would love to one day support her for governor. I wonder if like so many she has her eyes or replacing Durbin whenever he retires.

  26. - Anyone Remember - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:44 pm:

Shannon Teresi - there is someone who has inhaled too deeply of the “forensic audit” fraud …

  27. - Demoralized - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:49 pm:

==Again you fault the Republicans for the budget impasse exclusively.==

I have never done that. So your lies continue.

You have never once acknowledged that Rauner made the situation worse. I can’t help it if that proves your dishonest. You’re nothing but a hyperpartisan hack. Period.

  28. - Arsenal - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 12:57 pm:

==One 4 year term of Rauner and one two year term of Munger during a period of divided government destroyed the State’s finances?==

No one in this thread exclusively blamed Rauner and Munger for the state’s finances, so who you responding to, pal? Is the answer “no one”? Has your simping for Rauner just reached such heights that any time anyone mentions anything about state finances you have to splutter “IT WASN’T ALL RAUNER’S FAULT”?

    Hope he sees this, dude.

  29. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 1:19 pm:

You never blamed any share of the budget impasse to the intransigence of Speaker Madigan, who was knee deep in the decades of fiscal decline and you finally called for his resignation AFTER Com Ed and his subsequent indictment.

Sorry but you win the Profile in Courage Award as the comic book phony

  30. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 1:25 pm:

===You never blamed any share of===

    “Asked and Answered”

===The Owl said it best, to paraphrase

He was frustrated too but taking steps to reform Illinois was MORE IMPORTANT (emphasis added) than a short (translation: an entire seated General Assembly, 2 fiscal years) term budget “stalemate”===

    It was a strategy.

Asked and answered, your beef is with Sandack. Sandack tattled on everyone.

    ===Sorry but… ===

… and yet, I’m a huge proponent of the Arroyo Rule, a mere indictment means resignation.

I’d like to think I’m a very big proponent of the Arroyo Rule.

    Good try. No. Sorry.

  31. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 1:32 pm:

When a Republican can’t get the C of C endorsement.

    Strange days indeed.

Durkin, you could be replaced with a circus chimp.

  32. - Demoralized - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:41 pm:

==Profile in Courage Award as the comic book phony==

That would be you. Phony to the core.

  33. - Demoralized - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:42 pm:

==You never blamed any share of the budget impasse==

And by the way you’ve never admitted that Rauner made it monumentally worse. Why? Because you’re dishonest.

  34. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 4:13 pm:

I don’t just believe Rauner was worse than Mike Madigan who is now indicted. It’s not even close who did more damage to Illinois reputation.

There are numerous large and small businesses that have given up on Illinois after 4 years of JB Pritzker.

  35. - Demoralized - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 4:16 pm:

And you still can’t be honest . . . so sad.

  36. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 4:17 pm:

    ===I don’t just believe===

The voters disagreed with you, Rauner moved to Florida. Diana Rauner stayed in Illinois and (shocked face) rebranded The Ounce after Bruce was governor.

You’re a comedy bit, just let us in on the act already.

  37. - Demoralized - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 4:19 pm:

Also LP I guess the Illinois Chamber of Commerce disagrees with you.

  38. - Pancho - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 6:35 pm:

==Susan Mendoza was in the legislature…==
It would be nice if you showed Susana Mendoza some respect by using her actual name when referring to her.

  39. - West Side the Best Side - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 7:50 pm:

Why do people bother responding to LP?
