Question of the day

Monday, Oct 3, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* WTVO

Governor JB Pritzker and challenger Darren Bailey will meet for two televised debates hosted and produced by Nexstar Media Group and our partners at AARP and Illinois State University.

The debates will take place on October 6, on the ISU campus in Normal and then again on October 18, at the WGN-TV studios in Chicago. […]

In addition to taking questions from the panelists, the candidates will respond to questions from Illinois voters. We would like to hear about the issues important to you.

If you could pose a question to the candidates for governor, what would you ask? Fill in the form below, and your question could be featured during the live debate broadcast on Oct 6.

* The Question: If you could pose a question to the candidates for governor, what would you ask?

  1. - Joe in Joliet - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:25 pm:

    To Mr. Bailey, you have proposed cutting State spending and taxes which is not necessarily bad. Question is, what specific State programs, program areas, and/or State Departments would you target for cuts in funding?

  2. - Huh? - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:38 pm:

    Mr. Bailey, who won the 2020 presidential election?

    Mr. Bailey, what evidence do you have of widespread election fraud?

    Mr. Bailey, if you lose the election, will you concede the election and attend the inauguration of Mr. Pritzker?

  3. - Demoralized - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:48 pm:

    I think a standard question for any Republican these days is: Will you accept the results of the election?

  4. - Lurker - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:51 pm:

    Pritzker: what do you consider your one greatest fiscal accomplishment as governor?
    Bailey: what do you consider the one greatest fiscal failure of the current governor?

  5. - Demoralized - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:52 pm:

    Since his running mate said this - “Where in JB’s Illinois can you live for $12 an hour? - I’d ask Darren Bailey if that is true then what would you support as a livable minimum wage?

  6. - Benjamin - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:53 pm:

    As always, my suggested question is a self-critique. Something along the lines of “You’ve drawn up a plan to make Illinois a better place to live–what’s the weakest part of it? What could happen if you’re wrong?”

  7. - Aaa123 - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:53 pm:

    You’ve said there’s no threat to women’s abortion rights in Illinois and certainly not feasible with the current make up of the legislature. With these numbers in mind, how do you plan to repeal the Safety Act and fulfill other campaign promises like ending the FOID card or restoring parental notifications?

  8. - Back to the Future - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:55 pm:

    Mr. Pritzker:
    On reflection, what steps do you think you should have taken to prevent the 1.9 Billion dollar theft of unemployment funds that was found in a recent audit of the Illinois Department of Employment Security?

  9. - OneMan - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:57 pm:

    Governor, it seems that the perception of crime in the Chicago area is that it is worse, why do you think this is and what can you do as Governor to address it?

    Sen Baily you had previously stated a position about abortion as being “for now”, has your position changed?

    Governor, in some parts of the Chicago area (the South Suburbs of Chicago in particular) people pay very high property tax rates, what should the state do to address that issue in those areas?

    Governor, there has been a ‘buzz’ about you running for higher office, will you commit today to finish your second term if you are re-elected?

    Senator Bailey, recent TV commercials have pointed out the use of a specific curriculum in a school you helped start. Do you think the emergence of women in the workforce has been a net positive?

    Both candidates, there are and will continue to be significant staffing shortages in health care, what will you do to improve this situation?

  10. - ArchPundit - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:58 pm:

    Do you believe that schools in Illinois have litter boxes for furries to use?

  11. - H-W - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 2:59 pm:

    @Demoralized - I get the impression Bailey would take to the party line about minimum wages are not supposed to be livable wages.

    Bailey would probably suggests minimum wages are supposed to be first wages, and that workers are supposed to be inspired by minimum wages to pursue upward mobility to garner higher wages.

    Of course, the irony here is that minimum wage businesses want to exist by exploiting insufficient wages for their employees, and thus do not concern themselves with what a livable wage might look like. They prosper only as long as they are allowed to pay clearly inhumane (non-livable) wages.

  12. - Red Ketcher - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:02 pm:

    To each of you as Candidates for Governor:
    “Separation of Church and State”
    Please expound on that principle,
    It’s meaning to you;
    Can and will you adhere to it ?;
    How it will affect your tenure as Governor?;
    How will it affect you personally?.

  13. - H-W - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:07 pm:

    I would ask each candidate to articulate their own thoughts on what content areas should be required from all high schools (public and private) operating in Illinois, and what the State of Illinois might establish as minimal achievement standards in these areas, for all students to master.

  14. - Carbondale Chronicle - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:07 pm:

    I believe we need more civility in our elections; therefore and although not in question form, I would state the following:

    Say something nice about your opponent.

  15. - Henry Francis - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:12 pm:

    JB: As Governor, what has been your most important accomplishment?

    Bailey: As Senator, what has been your most important accomplishment?

  16. - Nick Name - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:12 pm:

    “Who won the 2020 election.”

    If a candidate can’t answer that question correctly, no other question matters.

  17. - Give Us Barabbas - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:17 pm:

    To Bailey: give one irrefutable, concrete and specific documented example of “CRT” being taught in an Illinois grade school or high school. And define what -specifically- “CRT” means, not with allusions or innuendo, but define it as if it was a dictionary definition. Do you believe Illinois children need to learn about the civil war, slavery, reconstruction, Jim Crow, the civil rights movement, and women’s rights? Also, please explain if you believe that gay and transgender people are “disordered”, or not. Do you believe their existence is purely a “lifestyle choice” or part of their biology? Are they equally citizens of Illinois or not? If Trump is convicted of a crime, will you repudiate him?

    Pritzker: You railed against Rauner’s failures over sickened veterans, then had the same or worse things happen to you under your watch during covid; your Veterans Director resigned in disgrace. Explain, without blaming Rauner, what -you- are doing to fix severe problems in Veterans Affairs, HFS, DCFS, IDES, CMS, and IDOC, and why you have so little progress to show for nearly three years of effort at any of them. Why has the state cannabis business you favored, been such a tangled mess after all this time? Are these agency directors your people, doing what you ask, or not?

  18. - Jerry - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:22 pm:

    Sen Bailey, you state that you are a Pro-Life Christian. Do you support a ban on erectile dysfunction medicines to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies? Should a man’s body be under surveillance by the government? Do you support Awake Illinois and their limitations on Free Speech? Do you support closing at least half of the prisons in Illinois and consolidating them?

  19. - Chicagonk - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:24 pm:

    To Pritzker - What changes do you want to see out of the trailer bill to the SAFE-T Act?
    To Bailey - Who won the 2020 election?

  20. - Joshua P. - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:32 pm:

    If the State Budget should require it in the next four years, how would you propose raising one billion in revenue?

  21. - up2now - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 3:57 pm:

    Gov. Pritzker, Sen. Bailey, tell us one thing you admire about your opponent.

  22. - XonXoff - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 4:03 pm:

    Senator Bailey, absent the many millions your family has received in government subsidies, would your families farming businesses have failed completely?

  23. - Mitch59 - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 4:26 pm:

    Mr. Bailey, You say you want to fix the state pension, what is your plan, other than opening constitution and taking it from current retirees?

  24. - Rich Miller - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 4:27 pm:

    ===other than opening constitution===

    For the kabillionth time, amending the constitution is not opening it up. The only way to really open it up is to have a convention. Stop this.

  25. - Just Peachy - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 4:48 pm:

    Agree totally Nickname @3:12 If you can’t accept the outcome of the 2020 election…you are no good to anyone.

  26. - thoughts matter - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 6:48 pm:

    What happened on January 6 2021? Was it peaceful protest or an invasion of the US Capitol. Explain your answer.

    Who won the 2020 election?

    Describe your thoughts on women working outside the home. Describe why you think it’s for government to interfere in other people’s medical and marital decisions. Doesn’t that conflict with the concept of smaller government?

  27. - John - Monday, Oct 3, 22 @ 7:59 pm:

    Approximately how old do you think the earth is?

  28. - Early Wynn - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 6:17 am:

    JB , about thé pension issue . How about a special assessment for all residents so we can fix it for once .
