Attorney General Raoul up with new TV ad focusing on abortion, ERA

Tuesday, Oct 4, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Here you go

* Script

Woman 1: I never thought I would see Roe reversed in my lifetime. But here we are.

Woman 2: What will they take away next?

Woman 3: How do we protect choice for women in Illinois?

Woman 4: And the rest of the Midwest?

Kwame Raoul: As your attorney general, we are in court right now fighting like hell to defend access to reproductive freedom and working to have the Equal Rights Amendment recognized as part of the Constitution. This extremist attack on women’s freedoms… not in Illinois. Not while I’m Attorney General. I’m Kwame Raoul. This is a work of my life. And there’s so much more to do.

“And the rest of the Midwest?”

    Kwame for regional Attorney General?

  2. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 4:06 pm:

I saw this and I thought — why does Kwame have an ad? I forgot that he was up for re-election. Seriously.

  3. - Amalia - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 4:20 pm:

A Hits important matters for women and includes the ERA, which is often forgotten by many.

  4. - Gravitas - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 4:22 pm:

B-/C+ Raoul is recycling the same slogan as he used in the last campaign (”the work of my life”).

  5. - Natty Lite - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 4:23 pm:

The ERA stuff sounds good for an ad I guess, but he has an uphill battle in court to say the least. Various courts, judges appointed by presidents of both parties, and both the Trump and Biden justice departments have taken a different position. Can’t blame him for taking a shot though — it came so close.

How many politicians want to be remembered for Abortion being the work of their life?

What happened to safe, legal and rare that was the platform during the moderate Clinton administration?

  7. - Three Dimensional Checkers - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 4:28 pm:

B-. It’s decent, but probably stronger without the ERA thing. I’m not holding my breath on this ERA case. I am not wild about the phrase “this is the work of my life” either.

===How many politicians want to be remembered for Abortion being the work of their life?

What happened to safe, legal and rare that was the platform during the moderate Clinton administration?===

What happened is Republicans want children, rape and incest victims, women facing real health choices… to not have abortion available.

    That’s what happened.

That framing, that’s a great cause to the safety, health and welfare of women as a real charge for a life’s work.

Unless you think it’s important that an incest victim of 12 carry a pregnancy to term for her rapist, maybe family member.

“What happened to safe, legal and rare that was the platform during the moderate Clinton administration?”

A handful of democrats started to realize that it doesn’t matter how you frame your messages, republicans will still be the party where misogynists make policy, so you might as well be direct about the particular right to healthcare you intend to protect.

==What happened to safe, legal and rare==

Because Boomers will hit the fainting couches if you say, “Don’t want an abortion? Don’t have one (exclamation point)”

  11. - illini - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 5:18 pm:

I am anxiously awaiting the first DeVore ad. I’m certain it will be memorable, hard hitting and powerful enough to change the trajectory of his campaign.

  12. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 5:23 pm:

    The framing is the issue?

Of course the Democrats are never extreme or out of touch with the majority opinion.

Only 28% support abortion after the first trimester.

Are Illinois Democrats in line with that?

Lindsay Grahams proposal allowed two more weeks past that.

Also recycling all of the B roll footage of him from his ads last cycle.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 6:14 pm:

    ===The framing is the issue?===

    Voters don’t do nuance.

In reality, Republicans are angry at Lindsey Graham for his bill, not happy with him.

    “Why?”

    Framing.

  15. - clec dcn - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 6:55 pm:

Some women do not at all agree with Raoul but they are not in the majority. Hopefully that can change.

  16. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 7:16 pm:

Lucky Pierre, what percentage of Americans believe a woman should be allowed to bleed to death or lose her uterus because has a serious problem with her pregnancy after the 12-week cutoff?

  17. - Jibba - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 7:41 pm:

Nice try, LP, but the data don’t go as far as you say. The poll says that somewhere about 85-90% of Americans think that abortion should be legal in at least some circumstances, even after 24 weeks. And those sad circumstances are exactly why most women get abortions later in their terms (fetal abnormalities, medical issues, etc.). I think the Dems are exactly where they should be.

  18. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 8:17 pm:

=== What happened to safe, legal and rare ===

That middle ground doesn’t exist anymore.

The legal protections of Roe were destroyed by your party in DC.

A woman whose six-month old fetus is dead inside her because of Hurricane Ian is now waiting in a hospital in Florida because she cannot legally have the fetus removed until her life is in danger.

As for rare? Republicans are opposing sex education, and trying to make birth control illegal now as well.

Is there an Illinois Republican holding office who believes abortion should be legal, safe and rare?

    No.

So, in the face of an all out Republican threat to have the government take control of women’s bodies, what do Illinois voters want?

Someone who will “fight like hell” for them.

    Kwame’s ad is an A.

== Lindsay Grahams proposal allowed two more weeks past that.==

Later term abortions are rare. The vast majority of late term abortions are due to medical necessity. In the case of pregnant children, the realization that they are pregnant may come late. That’s why tying the hands of medical professionals and the people they care for is wrong.

  20. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Oct 4, 22 @ 8:42 pm:

The ad is an A. Simple, direct, clear.

  21. - Must win - Wednesday, Oct 5, 22 @ 6:49 am:

Lies, abortion is the law of the land on illinois and there’s no push in springfield to overturn that, a they say, show me 71 and 30 to vote to ban, so basically he isn’t fighting for anything because he do want have to.

  22. - Annonin' - Wednesday, Oct 5, 22 @ 9:35 am:

Can you imagine how Bat***t crazy the whacks will go if the Supremes can’t find a way block ERA ratification. Some believe the court, even this fantasy land collection will be hard pressed.

  23. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Oct 5, 22 @ 10:32 am:

===abortion is the law of the land on illinois and there’s no push in springfield to overturn that===

So, you’re saying it’s “settled law”? Hmm. Where have I heard that before? Laws can be changed. Majorities can change. Governors can change. Unions thought they were pretty safe until Rauner was elected.

  24. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 5, 22 @ 12:25 pm:

===Lindsay Grahams proposal allowed two more weeks past that.===

    It’s a federal “limiting”

    Federal.

The narrative to stand folks off blaming republicans is that “states can decide”

Welp, Graham wants a national limiting.

Abortion is not a winning issue for Republicans and before June… and not having caught the bumper of the car that was a pro-life plank… it’s been bad.

    - LP -… abortion will be a big decider in less than 5 weeks
