If I needed to describe last night’s debate in one word, it would be “frustrating.” Definitely unsure that anyone on the fence would have made up their mind from that mess.

  2. - If it sells in peoria - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 8:49 am:

JB has no business wasting his time running for President if he can’t handle the farmer from downstate. That was… something.

  3. - MaddyMoon - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 8:51 am:

boring debate. trump has ruined how american politicians debate.

also JB can’t name one song lol. tell me you have the personality of a surfboard without telling me you have the personality of a surfboard.

  4. - JoanP - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 8:51 am:

It was crazy windy here last night - and I don’t mean the gubernatorial debate.

  7. - Candy Dogood - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 8:54 am:

I think it helps to go through the excercise of considering that your political opposition may actually believe what their positions are on specific issues instead of using their statements as a smoke screen for their actual views and their actual reason for supporting a specific policy position.

When I do that with the discussion of the SAFE-T act and the positions being taken by the right in opposition to it, it begs the question what if these folks in law enforcement are actually so bad at their jobs and so ignorant of the law that they actually believe this nonsense?

Then we have a different problem that’s much more disturbing. This “we won’t be able to arrest trespassers” narrative is concerning if these yackadoodles actually believe this instead of just signing onto whatever lie they think gives them the most traction.

Any person in law enforcement who makes these crazy statements should be replaced by someone competent in the law or ethical enough not to lie about it because they use cash bail as a means to hold people without conviction indefinitely. Especially poor people. Especially people of color who were the original targets of loitering and vagrancy statutes.

Two people released on bond for committing COVID fraud in Sangamon County. Does Dan Wright know whether they used fraudulent proceedings to bond out?

    Indeed we do.

  10. - Nooram38 - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 9:10 am:

Bailey did better than I expected and JB didn’t do as well as I expected. I think JB may have underestimated his opponent. Bailey will probably get a 2-4 percent bounce in the polls, but that will probably be his high water mark.

  11. - Dirty Red - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 9:28 am:

Write-off opponents at your own risk and run like you’re behind.

  12. - Walker - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 9:33 am:

Candy. Good comments. the difficulty comes when you know your opponent knows better when stating a falsehood — do you just act as if he’s been poorly informed or missing the underlying point and move on, or do you call him out directly? Tactics favor the former; emotion the latter.

  13. - Arsenal - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 9:35 am:

== JB has no business wasting his time running for President if he can’t handle the farmer from downstate.==

    1) JB probably isn’t running for President because Biden probably is.

    2) you’re a rube if you think Bailey hasn’t been entirely handled so far.

  14. - Friendly Bob Adams - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 9:37 am:

Is there any evidence that anyone was watching the debate (other than CapFax and Twitter political junkies)??

  15. - If it sells in peoria - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 9:39 am:

    Arsenal-

JB nor Gavin nor anyone else who wants to one cares if Biden runs.

Secondly Dirty Red said it best, JB not running like he is behind. Don’t matter the state or politics, don’t risk it.

  16. - Anon221 - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 9:52 am:

Friendly Bob Adams- Well… there was a pretty good showing at the debate party at Bone according to the photos and Pantagraph article.

  17. - H-W - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 10:00 am:

Governor Pritzker is in town today. Apparently, we are going to break ground on our WIU Performing Arts Center again. Fifteen years in the making, third ground breaking ceremony.

    People are taking bets.

  18. - Arsenal - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 10:03 am:

== JB nor Gavin nor anyone else who wants to one cares if Biden runs.==

Of course they do. They’re normie Dems. They’re not going to challenge an incumbent Dem who has 75%+ of the party approving of him.

(And yes, 75% is low for an incumbent and it speaks to Biden’s very real problems, but it’s not nearly low enough to lose a primary.)

  19. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 10:04 am:

JB is insufferably arrogant and transactional

In his mind writing 24 million in checks for ads for Darren Bailey in the primary is all he needed to do to win reelection.

He showed up for the debate but it is clear he didn’t study for the exam.

Astounded he was like a deer in the headlights on any specifics on modifying the SAFE T act.

No acknowledgment of the very real concerns of States Attorneys or law enforcement given how the experiment has worked so far in Chicago.

His performance further cements his I know best and anyone who disagrees is a carnival barker attitude

  20. - Pundent - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 10:06 am:

The speculation around Pritzker running for President is amusing. It tells me he’s doing a fairly good job in his current role to warrant that discussion. I don’t recall anyone suggesting that Pat Quinn or Bruce Rauner would be aiming for higher office.

It’s easy for Bailey to pledge that he won’t be running for President. His political career will be over in a month.

  21. - Arsenal - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 10:11 am:

== JB not running like he is behind. Don’t matter the state or politics, don’t risk it.==

Those are two different things. Behind candidates need to shake up the race. That increases the incentives *to take* risks. You should take a risk because if it works you are t behind anymore, and if it doesn’t, well, you were already behind so you haven’t lost much. That incentive structure is almost entirely flipped when you’re ahead. You want the campaign to stay the exact same right up until Election Day. Pretending you’re down when you’re not- pretending *anything* about the race isn’t what it actually is- is riskier.

And FWIW, Pritzker has done a good job freezing the race in amber. He got the opponent he wanted, he defined him right out of the gate, went up on the air and has stayed on the air, etc. he’s not taking this for granted.

  22. - Arsenal - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 10:23 am:

== JB is insufferably arrogant and transactional==

Same old song and dance from you, LP. JB won’t indulge your lies so you think he’s arrogant.

== He showed up for the debate but it is clear he didn’t study for the exam.==

When did we change the meaning of “clear” to “another LP lie”? Pritzker came armed with facts and figures documenting his successes, especially in education and economic development. Bailey’s only answer to everything was “zero based budgeting”, a term he could never define. If anyone demonstrated that he didn’t study, it was your buddy Darren.

== No acknowledgment of the very real concerns of States Attorneys or law enforcement==

Because they’re not real. We have repeatedly debunked their lies on this very blog. Rich just put up ANOTHER post doing so.

== His performance further cements his I know best and anyone who disagrees is a carnival barker attitude==

I’m so sorry that he disagrees with you. In his defense, you’re constantly wrong and lie a lot, so I get why he does so.

    Report from the Hellhole…
Attended an event last night at the Civic Opera (built in 1929). The cast and sixty-five musicians in the orchestra pit provided hours of theater joy.

Restaurants were busy and folks were out and about on Wacker Drive. More, please.

  24. - low level - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 10:35 am:

Darren Bailey and running for higher office and pledges.
    He is one to talk.

2018 he runs for state rep
2019 not year into his term he decides state senate is better
/020 he runs for state senate
2021 not a year into his term decides governor is more his style
    2022 runs for governor

Dude has the attention span of s 5 year old. Who needs to sign what form?

  25. - Steve Polite - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 11:43 am:

“24 million in checks for ads FOR Darren Bailey”

I haven’t see any democratic ads supporting Darren Bailey for Governor, have you Lucky? If you have please post a link.

I think your issue is with the primary republican voters who voted for Darren Bailey in spite of democratic ads against Darren Bailey for Governor. But you know this already.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 11:46 am:

===In his mind writing 24 million in checks for ads for Darren Bailey in the primary is all he needed to do to win reelection.===

Until you come to terms with 56%+ voting FOR Bailey in a SIX-WAY race…

    … it’s quite pathetic.

Five others could only muster 43%+ against Bailey.

    Bailey IS the ILGOP.

  27. - Pundent - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 12:00 pm:

=JB is insufferably arrogant and transactional.=

And the best that the GOP could offer as an alternative was Darren Bailey? If the Democratic party is all you claim it to be the GOP should be able to make headway in this state particularly in state-wide elections.

  28. - MisterJayEm - Friday, Oct 7, 22 @ 12:36 pm:

“what if these folks in law enforcement are actually so bad at their jobs and so ignorant of the law that they actually believe this nonsense?”

Then we’d live in a world where Chicago taxpayers shelled out more than $40 million in 2020 for misconduct by the Chicago Police Department, i.e. this one.
