The IL GOP’s take

Tuesday, Aug 20, 2024 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Illinois GOP Chair Kathy Salvi…

“JB Pritzker failed Illinois as its governor allowing our state to be overrun by illegal border-crossers, out-of-control crime, billions of dollars in new taxes, and as a result, our great state is in slow decay. Illinois’ residents are leaving in unprecedented numbers due to Illinoisans being the overall highest taxed people in the nation. Businesses are taking flight leaving and Illinois’ citizens and taxpayers are left paying the check. As Pritzker soft-launches his campaign for president, Illinois families are hurting, and Pritzker doesn’t care - our state is just another stepping stone for him to advance his ambition while we are saddled with the heavy effect of his administration’s failed policies. One thing is clear from Pritzker’s prime-time speaking slot — the only way our state will have actual representation is by voting Republican in November.”

Discuss.

    Rejected statewide candidate says what?

  3. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 11:59 am:

    One word. Pathetic.

Salvi and her Republican ilk have nothing of substance to provide when it comes to ideas. They simply regurgitate their broken record complaints that the state is failing. Not sure what state they live in but it certainly isn’t the same state I live in.

The voters have overwhelmingly rejected your Republicans. Maybe take a hint. It is your ideas that are failures.

A word salad of blah. It’s like a Chat GPT generated attempt.

  5. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:00 pm:

Salvi’s schtick sounds as tired and old as the candidate her party’s wholeheartedly supporting.

“Illinois’ residents are leaving in unprecedented numbers due to Illinoisans being the overall highest taxed people in the nation.”

They’re not leaving the state in unprecedented numbers - our population grew based on the most recent census data. Republicans seem to not know this, or at least pretend they don’t.

We’re also not the highest taxed people in the nation, but can’t say I’m surprised at another falsehood.

“Businesses are taking flight” - except that we’re adding lots of jobs and attracting companies and industries, e.g. cannabis and electric vehicle manufacturing.

“the only way our state will have actual representation is” by our federal congressional representatives and our senators.

  7. - Roadrager - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:02 pm:

A statement constructed solely for broadcast in the echo chamber. That’s a surefire way to grow an electoral base and return a party to statewide relevance.

Looks like it’ll be another Wednesday morning of Illinois Republicans posting “vote totals by county” maps in November of 2026.

    “overrun by illegal border-crossers”

    Hoosiers?

  10. - low level - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:08 pm:

Ms. Salvi, you are not a worthy opponent. The only question now is how much Harris will win the state by and how big the Democratic majorities will be in Springfield.

Please have a seat. Thank you.

  12. - H-W - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:18 pm:

What planet does Salvi live on? None of that is true. Illinois is doing well.

If Republicans want to get back in the game, complaining and making up stories is not a winning approach. They have already proven this to themselves. Get a platform - offer something. Focus on ideas for creating a better future.

  13. - Huh? - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:20 pm:

“JB Pritzker takes care of the illegal border-crossers who are put on buses by the governors of Texas and florida.”

    Fixed it for ya.

  14. - Pundent - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:22 pm:

The ILGOP has been running the same playbook and talk track for the last decade or so. They’ve become an irrelevant party and I can only assume from Kathy Salvi’s comments that she’s fine with continuing that trend.

  15. - TJ - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:24 pm:

The ILGOP’s only chance in-state is to be vague about what they want while attacking the ILDems on everything both sensible and nonsensical. In other words, just keep pulling a Rauner. Hey, it worked once.

  16. - AlfondoGonz - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:38 pm:

You’d think the a political family as prominent as the Salvis would show more foresight than to join in the on the National GOP’s rhetoric.

Unfortunately, we’re seeing more and more that the, ahem, less intelligent voices in the GOP are drowning out whatever semblance of thoughtfulness that remained.

  17. - Macon Bakin - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:38 pm:

Salvi’s party is admittedly overrun by Donald J Trump Sr fans. Democrats are overrun by Khive but they are by no measure a majority within the party.

  18. - Six Degrees of Separation - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:45 pm:

TJ, it would also help if they were challenging Pat Quinn for every statewide office.

  19. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:53 pm:

    These are not serious people

  20. - Pundent - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 12:56 pm:

=You’d think the a political family as prominent as the Salvis….=

The political prominence of the Salvi family comes from being unpopular and losing elections. They are the perfect standard bearers for the ILGOP.

  21. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 1:06 pm:

    =“overrun by illegal border-crossers”

    Hoosiers?=

When you are about to make comments like that please give advanced warning so I am not taking a sip of my diet pepsi while reading it. I have to get my computer cleaned up now.

    “Hoosiers”…heh heh. Priceless.

  22. - Succinctly Superfluous - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 1:07 pm:

This is a party that must make concede before it can succeed.

It must concede that Illinois is a strong, pro-choice state. It must concede that Illinois is a strong, pro-union state. It must concede that Illinois is pro-LGBTQ+.

Then, and only then, can this party get up off the mat and start achieving any real electoral success. But giving advice to the Republican Party is futile. You’d have better luck convincing a duck not to quack.

  23. - Irmagerd - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 1:33 pm:

How many false statements can be put into one paragraph? Someone needs to go back to McDonalds and get a whaaburger and some french cries.

    JS -

I thought you would realize in IL its Don’t Drink & Drive and on Capitol Fax it is Don’t Drink & Read or if you do suffer the consequences.

  25. - Grimlock - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 1:39 pm:

Sounds like it was directed at some passing cloud.

  26. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 1:40 pm:

This is the messaging of a party resigned to losing, the same old fear and doom. It would be remiss for Pritzker to not counter doomsaying tonight with facts: Illinois gained population. Businesses relocate in Chicago metro in higher numbers every year than any other major American metro. Nationally, illegal border crossings and violent crime are declining. Lots to work with here.

  27. - OneMan - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 1:53 pm:

    “overrun by illegal border-crossers,”

You gonna ask states to stop bussing people up here then?

  29. - Annon3 - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 2:10 pm:

I hope you have a bigger audience for this then you had at the State Fair last week.

  30. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 2:16 pm:

Shorter ILGOP…”You kids get off my lawn”

  31. - Frida's boss - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 2:29 pm:

The ILGOP spent years spouting Mike Madigan’s name. That’s not there anymore.
They used a billionaire to co-opt the Governor’s mansion in 14 and gain some victories in 16. Gov was a failure and Trump reversed any victories by the 18 election and then helped add to the Dems margins in 20.
They tried the billionaire thing one more time in 2022 but couldn’t get out of their own way with Bailey winning the primary. That billionaire left.
The down-ticket destruction has been significant. They can’t find a winning formula. They won’t have a chance at a map they can write for at least 2 cycles if not more. Their message is so bad two major scandals could’ve taken down the Dems #metoo and ComEd. The Dems increased their margins during both.

They better hope MK decides she’s done with the mansion.

  32. - Kankakee - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 2:49 pm:

Headline: Republicans downgrade Illinois decay forecast to “slow”

  33. - Springfield - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 3:13 pm:

Let’s face it. This is completely accurate. Dems just aren’t ready to have that conversation. IL is a mess. The policies are failing residents and driving many to red states to live a better quality of life. We can do better than this, but only if we vote RED and wise up for a change in this failure of a state. It has become shameful to live amongst those who have simply become tolerant of horrible policies because they do not understand things.

  34. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, Aug 20, 24 @ 3:51 pm:

“We can do better than this, but only if we vote RED”

Better like when Bruce Rauner was submarining the state?

    Are you daft?

    – MrJM
