I am expecting my police department to put AI on its budget wish list for next year. If so, it’s sure to pose new obstacles to transparency.
Axon Enterprise (formerly Taser International) released an AI report-writing app last fall, and it’s been advertising it heavily to PDs everywhere in 2025.
The app is called Draft One, and it’s an add-on to two of Axon’s report management platforms. One of these is Evidence (aka Evidence.com) which my PD already uses with its body-worn camera and drone programs.
Electronic Frontier Foundation says Axon has designed Draft One to be un-auditable by anyone — even the very law enforcement agencies that use it. I recommend visiting eff.org for getting up to speed on Draft One, including advice for how to FOIA police records related to its use.

Lots of rain in Rogers Park last night with the non-stop thunderstorms between 9 and midnight, along with a coupletwo-tree earth-crackers.
