Pritzker on Trump: ‘I think he might be suffering from some dementia’

Tuesday, Sep 16, 2025 - Posted by Isabel Miller

* Trump this morning

* Governor JB Pritzker was asked about the president’s comments today and yesterday during a press conference this afternoon

Reporter: Let’s start on the big question. The president has again reaffirmed his desire to send National Guard troops to Chicago. Don’t take this the wrong way, but he said ‘Pritzker, he’s nothing,’ so tell me your reaction.

Pritzker: Look, I have said before that you can’t take anything that he says seriously. From one day to the next, he’s attacking verbally, sometimes he attacks [by] sending his agents in. Sometimes he forgets. I think he might be suffering from some dementia. You know, the next day, he’ll wake up on the other side of the bed and stop talking about Chicago. So I’ve never really counted on anything that he said is real. When he said that he wasn’t coming to Chicago, I didn’t trust that. When he says he is coming to Chicago, it’s hard to believe anything he says. […]

Reporter: Can you comment on the president this morning using the words ‘against Pritzker’ to describe going in with the National Guard?

Pritzker: Again, I think he’s losing it.

Does anyone honestly not think he is losing it?

  2. - Perrid - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:33 pm:

In all honesty, Trump has never been stable, not really coherent. Making up stuff, clearly not understanding much about the government or trade or foreign relations. So it’s hard for me to tell if he’s being as ignorant as he “normally” is or has an issue.

  3. - Three Dimensional Checkers - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:34 pm:

Ok. If grandpa is losing it, you should not go around shouting “grandpa, you’re going crazy.”

  4. - Norseman - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:38 pm:

    Agreed. He’s losing it.

  5. - ItsMillerTime - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:42 pm:

Trump’s going to love that. JB’s not the first politician to say Trump has dementia right? I feel like others have but I can’t think of anyone.

  6. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:42 pm:

I think he’s been out of it for years and his supporters either think it is his rogue persona or they think it is something they can take advantage of.

  7. - Excitable Boy - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:47 pm:

How long before this is declared hate speech?

  8. - Remember the Alamo II - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:47 pm:

Whether or not we think he is losing it, I don’t think it is appropriate for the Governor to be making these types of statements. We don’t want to be seen as calloused to individuals that do suffer from dementia or their families. There are better ways to defend against Trump’s attacks than to say he is losing his faculties.

  9. - walker - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:51 pm:

He has always appeared to be on a random mental walk, but he does sound more out of it recently.
At least he’s clear about why he’s really picked Chicago.

  10. - Roadrager - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:54 pm:

==Whether or not we think he is losing it, I don’t think it is appropriate for the Governor to be making these types of statements.==

Please stop these condescending lectures on what’s “appropriate” when one of the two national political parties is currently working to codify any criticism of its members or its friends as hate speech.

Joe Biden wasn’t half as gone at that miserable debate performance in 2024 as Trump is on a good day in 2025 and yet practically no one took issue with suggesting he was senile.

  11. - Larry Bowa Jr. - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:57 pm:

“We don’t want to be seen as calloused to individuals that do suffer from dementia or their families.”

No worries, we won’t be seen that way by anyone capable of intellectual honesty who has the slightest recollection of the 2024 campaign cycle.

  12. - DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 12:59 pm:

It is an odd thing about dementia the Democrats could never see it in a Democratic President and the Republicans can not see it in a Republican President
The 25th Amendment is useless unless it is for an obvious affliction like heart attack or stroke or serious illness

  13. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:01 pm:

    Dementia is a serious illness.

  14. - Loop Lady - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:15 pm:

I’m not convinced he has dementia. I do think he suffers from extreme narcissism, an ego based reality, having no idea what government/leadership is about, surrounds himself with sychophats, and is just a horrible human being.

    That should cover it.

  15. - here we go again - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:16 pm:

So after inciting hate and violence by comparing half of America to the Nazis, and then lying about it, Pritzker is choosing a new insult route. Anyone can see Pritzker is the one losing it.

  16. - Remember the Alamo II - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:18 pm:

=== No worries, we won’t be seen that way by anyone capable of intellectual honesty who has the slightest recollection of the 2024 campaign cycle. ===

Stop it. You can point out a President’s failures without resorting to commenting on their mental state. The problem in the 2024 campaign cycle is that nobody from the Biden camp or the Democratic side of the aisle was willing to publicly call out Biden’s failures and they kept their head in the sand until it was too late.

  17. - Excitable Boy - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:29 pm:

    - without resorting to commenting on their mental state. -

Are you saying with a straight face that no one called out Biden’s dementia during the last election? Is it possible you have dementia?

  18. - ArchPundit - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:29 pm:

—So after inciting hate and violence by comparing half of America to the Nazi

Criticizing the leadership of a political party is not criticizing every member of said party. And he compared specific actions to actions taken leading to the fall of democracy in Germany of which many historians and political science would agree with those concerns.

  19. - JB13 - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:31 pm:

Well, maybe his handlers should hide him away for a few years then and let his CoS or someone else who wasn’t elected run the country, while his administration and all other prominent Republicans keep telling everyone the president is fine, he’s never been more energetic, and you should see how mentally sharp and genius-level intelligent he is in private meetings.

Not that any presidential administration or party would ever do something like that.

And the governor would certainly never declare his unequivocal support for a president or candidate or party who did such a thing, I am sure.

  20. - Remember the Alamo II - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:35 pm:

=== Are you saying with a straight face that no one called out Biden’s dementia during the last election? ===

Certainly nobody operating from within the White House. Certainly no Democrats in Congress. His staff hid him from public view. It wasn’t until that fateful debate performance when the whole world got to see for itself the state that President Biden was in.

  21. - Frida's Boss - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:36 pm:

JB, the Dems, and the media should not be speaking about who or who isn’t losing it after the massive cover-up of Joe Biden’s issues. Jake Tapper wrote a book about their lies. Kamala Harris’ book had it in there as well.
JB and others had a chance to speak out, but didn’t; they all fed into the same lie.
So why should people believe him now?

  22. - Remember the Alamo II - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:38 pm:

=== Is it possible you have dementia? ===

You seriously had to lob attacks on my mental state to make your point? You couldn’t show me evidence supported your position without attacking me? I suppose it is easy for you to do since we are all generally anonymous personalities on this blog, but maybe you need to take a step back and think about whether your style of argument is appropriate or effective.

  23. - H-W - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:54 pm:

Just my thoughts, but if you read the extensive quote from Trump on today’s prior post - Trump sends National Guard to Memphis - there are a lot of points at which Trump seems a bit out of sorts. While some may suggest he is just a folksy-kind-of-guy, the languages used today is quite different from the way he spoke in the past. His train of thought consciousness has become less clear, and much more simpleminded.

  24. - don the legend - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 1:56 pm:

Yes, President Biden’s supporters have a blind spot about Biden’s mental state but that can in no way excuse us from ignoring the obvious mental defect in Trump.

Daily we are all witnesses to Trump’s babbling, incoherent and bizarre display of statements that clearly demonstrate a serious cognitive issue.

  25. - Excitable Boy - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:04 pm:

    - Certainly nobody operating from within the White House. -

    I’m talking about Biden’s opponents.

  26. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:05 pm:

If your only response to this is “BUT BIDEN” then you may not realize it, but you’re not denying the underlying claim.

So, try to focus on that.

  27. - 44 - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:13 pm:

Dementia? The dude is throwing long press conferences practically every day and keeping up a schedule like no other. He is trolling. Put a list together for federal resources to fight crime as an alternative to the national guard and ICE. Please and thank you.

  28. - Moe Berg - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:17 pm:

    GOPers on this thread:

Biden had dementia and that’s a problem.

Trump’s dementia is not a problem because…Biden had dementia.

    Also GOPers:

Biden’s staff hid him away so we couldn’t see that he’s demented and that’s a problem.

Trump himself and his staff put his dementia on full display and that’s not a problem.

  29. - Blue Dog - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:22 pm:

whether has dementia or not, a whole bunch of people in swing states like his talk. that’s all that matters. BTW take arizona off the blue map.

  30. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:40 pm:

Trump is upending the norms and has little, if any, filter. I think for a lot people, this comes down to a question of dementia or “crazy like a fox.” Either way, the lack of predictability and adherence to both laws and established practice is incredibly disruptive and disturbing. Some folks are cheering this while others are worried.

  31. - 40,000 ft - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:42 pm:

Trump might be a mad genius, but he definitely doesn’t fit a dementia symptom profile — shuffling feet, poor balance, incorrect words/names, problem-solving, mood changes, time/space confusion. Trump does none of that.

Who gives Pritzker advice like this? It’s inciting, far from insighting, and false on its face.

As a Trump supporter, I appreciate that in the last 24hrs he has given updates on the $250 ballroom construction project, leaned on the EU to quit buying Russian oil “can’t have it both ways,” and about 20 other things if you consume the news that covers him favorably. He knows what’s going on in the last 24 hrs in the courts, the hill, and out in the country.

He might be a dramatic troll, but he’s good at that too.

JB, good luck landing any jabs that will be persuasive to the center. Definitely a “swing and a miss” on this one.

  32. - LPDoctor - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:45 pm:

I’m denying he has dementia. Source: Me, a doctor. I’ll put my MCAT score against anyone on this board.

Last time I looked Pritzker didn’t go to medical school.

  33. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 2:50 pm:

I thought it’s unethical for a doctor to diagnose someone who is not their patient.

    ===a doctor to diagnose someone===

Which doctor did that on this post?

  36. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 3:17 pm:

    =Trump might be a mad genius=

Hardly. You do not seem qualified to assess who is and who is not a “genius” which is typically an IQ of 140 bor better and some scales 145 or better. Since we are being pedantic.

    =As a Trump supporter,=

Then you are ok with the constant attacks on US citizens while playing lap dog to a russian autocrat. Good to know.

= leaned on the EU to quit buying Russian oil “can’t have it both ways,” =

And yet he has failed to assess the additional sanctions he has talekd about for months. WHich is it? You can’t have it both ways.

Pritzker is trolling trump and if you were more clear-eyed you would understand that. Given trumps incessant name calling, it is the epitome of hypocrisy to criticize Pritzker while, at the same time, lauding trump.

Pritzker is simply beating trump at his own game, just like Newsome.

  39. - Remember the Alamo II - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 3:25 pm:

All of this brings me back to my initial point:

We shouldn’t be trying to cut down people who are doing things with which we disagree by accusing them of having some mental condition.

Attach the arguments - not the person. If we Democrats want to win our country back, that will have to be our strategy. People who are on the other side will not take you seriously if all you are doing is making silly comments like this. Attack the arguments and the policy.

If you had anybody else try to speak to you in the inarticulate and garbled way the President does, your first follow up question to them would be: “By the way, do you happen to be smelling burnt toast right now?”

  42. - Pundent - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 3:36 pm:

=Pritzker is simply beating trump at his own game, just like Newsome.=

Exactly. It’s good to see this pivot. More people need to meet Trump where he’s at not where we want him to be.

“he definitely doesn’t fit a dementia symptom profile — shuffling feet, poor balance, incorrect words/names, problem-solving, mood changes, time/space confusion. Trump does none of that”

This is the good stuff right here. Is that you, Sean Hannity? Is this me?

  46. - Huh? - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 4:00 pm:

It takes more than watching out of context news clips to determine that a person does not have dementia.

It takes a neuropsychological exam that suggests the presence of dementia. Then it takes further medical tests, such as blood, spinal taps, CT scans, and/or MRI scans, to confirm a diagnosis.

I am not a doctor. I am a board certified licensed professional engineer. So how do I know as fact about what I wrote above?

I know because 3-1/2 years ago, my wife had a neuropsych exam that suggested Alzheimer’s disease. Another one is scheduled for November. Eleven months ago, she had the spinal taps, CT, and MRI scans and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She is seeing a neurologist every 6 months.

I think it is clear that something is going on with trump’s cognitive abilities. It might be fair to say that he has dementia.

  47. - TNR - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 4:00 pm:

Some quality trolling from JB. Sure to bait Trump into another round of insults. Which is great for JB’s presidential campaign. No one is rooting for Trump to send in the National Guard more the JB is — except for the folks who have bet on JB in the political futures market.

  48. - 40,000 ft - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 4:18 pm:

Trump’s “stream of consciousness” narrative style is far from garbled or inarticulate — “non-linear thought process, free association, unconventional syntax, emotional depth.”

After researching a few minutes, Reagan used it, even Toni Morrison was mentioned. It was named in 1855.
It seems to be effective, he is the President.

It’s definitely not a characteristic of dementia.

  49. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 4:20 pm:

    ==incorrect words/names=

He does this constantly. Either you aren’t paying attention or you’re so used to it that you don’t notice it.

  50. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 4:21 pm:

    ==Reagan used it==

Most people agree Reagan had cognitive issues his second term.

  51. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 4:24 pm:

    ===Reagan used it===

Not taking a side on this, but Reagan would up being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, so probably not the best retort.

  52. - 40,000 ft - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 4:38 pm:

point, Big Dipper. I will watch more closely and see if I think Trump is losing it.

I like that style personally and have known several very smart high-functioning individuals that use it.

==shuffling feet, poor balance, incorrect words/names, problem-solving, mood changes, time/space confusion. Trump does none of that.

He does all of that. I don’t know if it is dementia, but the best defense appears to be that he’s erratic, confuses places and concepts, obnoxious, loses his temper, but not because of dementia.

The California faucet discussion is a journey all it’s own.

==BTW take arizona off the blue map.==

Trump is the least popular President at this point in his Presidency other than at this point in his first term.

Because of Kirk? Kirk polled at the same level as a replacement level Republican when he was considering a race for AZ Governor was in the middle of the pack for the primary. Kirk wasn’t universally beloved. Most people vaguely knew who he was other than committed conservatives.

I don’t know if Donald Trump has dimentia or not. I would have empathy for him if he did. I do know that he regularly accused Joe Biden of having dimentia. I don’t know if that was true. But I know that Trump had absolutely no empathy for Joe Biden. I’m not sure how he feels about others with dimmentia.

  56. - Ok - Tuesday, Sep 16, 25 @ 5:44 pm:

And this coming from a Governor that every other word is umm and you know. He has improved his interviewing over the years, but still going to struggle on a national stage
