* After the assassinations of two Minnesota legislators and then Charlie Kirk, pretty much everyone in this business is on edge…
* Shaw Local…
Shorewood police responded to three reports of gunfire Tuesday morning, and two residences were damaged.
Officers were called to the area of Ca-Crest Drive and Highland Drive for a report of shots fired at 4:50 a.m. but were initially unable to find anyone in the area or evidence of damage, according to a statement from the Shorewood Police Department. […]
Shorewood police said in their statement that the owners of the two impacted homes do not know each other and have no common known affiliations.
* Shorewood police say they have a suspect in custody…
Thanks to the help of many neighbors sharing their videos with us, our officers and detectives were able to identify the vehicle and suspect involved in this mornings shootings. We are happy to report that the suspect has been taken into custody. We will release more information when it is available, but for now residents can be assured that there is no further threat from this person.
* Isabel reached out to the Senator. Here’s her report…
Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel said she has not been notified whether the shooting at her home was politically motivated.
In the moments after the shot was discovered, she said she was shocked. Cappel noted that she generally keeps a low profile, but the incident made her reconsider the risks elected officials face. “It really made me think that sometimes it just doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or a Democrat,” she said. “Somebody is always just not going to like you because of the party you’re affiliated with.”
She added that she is still processing what happened. “I think [the recent political violence] has legislators and electeds looking over their shoulders a bit more and being a lot more cautious because of the climate of our political world right now,” Cappel said.
Cappel said her adult children were at her home at the time of the shooting.
“Now they have to deal with this, and worry that their mom’s going to be murdered, even though we don’t know the motive of it, but, you know, that’s just on their mind,” Cappel said. “So that’s the hard part, the kids dealing with it.”
Cappel said she has previously taken steps to increase her security, installing cameras and fencing at her home. After Melissa Hortman, the Democratic speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, was assassinated in June, she also added security at her office. She said she has been in contact with the Illinois State Police to conduct an assessment to see if there are any security gaps.
…Adding… A source told us local authorities have determined the incident at Sen. Cappel’s home was not politically motivated.

I’m so old, I remember when people used politics to avoid violence.

So sad and distrubing to hear this.

National news has it and everyone in this part of the world is terrified at worst and mildly panicked at best.
If this was political, going after Senator Cappel is wild. She is one of the most reasonable, thoughtful, dedicated public servants you can have.
She actively wants to make peoples lives better and government to just work.

It’s accessible right now–he might have removed some content after he got attention which is, I guess good. He seems like a delight.
Best wishes to the Senator. We’ll see what was behind the gun fire, but it’s not very comforting if it wasn’t politically motivated, but I find myself still pulling for that.

Interesting that many of these electeds (not all) were pretty lax ion their reaction when educators were getting death threats and threats of violence. Even now they don’t seem to worried when superintendents like me get them. I get them every year.
If it has never happened to you I can tell you it is worrisome. I can fend for myself (and have to because the police don’t do a heck of a lot) and I have my ccl. But my spouse and children don’t. I don’t live in the district I work in and my address is not public. My kids don’t live at home anymore but I hate telling my wife when I get these.

“two residences were damaged.”
I’m a few miles away from this location.
It should be noted these two residences are not on the same street, and took place over a period of a few hours early morning.
I’m not diminishing the incident, nor do I think it’s unexpected for the Senator to be on edge with events over the past week.
However, there are a not insignificant number of ‘car shoots at house, shell casings found in the street’ stories coming out of this general area in recent months. There is a bit of a gang problem developing, and it’s one the locals are extremely reluctant to acknowledge even exists. It’s bad for property values, don’cha kno’. In an information vacuum that probably shouldn’t exist if officials had been more forthcoming about this issue over the past few months, wild speculation will rush in to fill that vacuum.
A few neighborhoods away, a few months ago;
https://patch.com/illinois/joliet/joliet-home-shot-people-were-inside-it
There are more similar stories in the same general area.
I’m not saying it’s impossible she’s targeted, but when taken as a whole and given similar recent local events, it’s more likely this is just another generic shooting in the area to mark territory.
But I don’t have all the information, so I could very easily be wrong. At this point I simply don’t think we should be thinking ‘zebra’ when we hear hooves, when horse is far more likely. At least not without also mentioning the other nearby shootings of houses in the past few months. It’s been going on for awhile, but the average person having their house get shot at with casings left in the road doesn’t get the same attention in the news as a Senator.

JS, certainly MAGA-electeds. What’s worse, Gym Jordan and his cohorts politicized DOJ’s efforts to try and deal with the problem.
- JS Mill - Wednesday, Sep 17, 25 @ 2:48 pm:
@Norseman- yes, agree. There are certainly electeds that wanted or actually tried to do something about it. And, I understand the concern that those receiving threats have and can empathize with it. It is awful for them and their families.

When all large social media platforms (especially X) incentivize Q-anon type content that falsely claims democrats are killing children and drinking their blood, and about 30 million Americans (mostly conservative) believe this, and there is a significant overlap with this group and the demographics more likely to own guns, you have a recipe for more and more assassination attempts specifically on Democratic Party elected. As a society we have to be more serious about dis-incentivizing obviously dangerous and inciting lies.
