Today’s MLB quotable

* The Tribune’s Paul Sullivan…
The ballpark was relatively quiet with the Cubs offense on mute. Wrigley was in dire need of some mood enhancement when Seiya Suzuki homered off Nick Pivetta to lead off the fifth.
“Electric,” Kelly said. “Hearing the crack of the bat, seeing the ball go, I was like, ‘I wanna do that.’ It was pretty cool to see that energy. You feel it as a player, and it was a good day to wear a Cubs uniform.”
Then Kelly did that. He smoked another home run to left, giving the Cubs the lead and turning Wrigley into a fully krausened mosh pit.
I agree with Bill Savage. That’s some fine writing.
And, yes, my Cubs hate is indeed waning as my Sox ownership hate is rising. I even went to a game last week…

The Phoenix Suns haven’t exactly set the world on fire since Ishbia’s been the owner, and he’s a right-winger too.

As are almost all billionaire sports franchise owner. (Virginia McCaskey was one of Jeanne Ives’ most reliable donors.) If we base our loyalties on the politics of the team owners, Democrats are gonna have slim pickings.

Is he? I do not know the man, and there is not much indication of his politics in a quick Google.
The Pope gave me a special dispensation to attend a Cubs game recently. It was fine. They exist and have a chance to win the World Series this year. But, they’re just a close-fisted team that makes much more money than all the other cheap teams.

Someone needs to send this link to Jerry. Maybe it will wake him up.

the Ricketts boys are some special sauce, leading fundraising for Trump, avoiding property taxes, one who sold his share in the U.S. Senate after being gov and voting against all manner of good things. and their daddy and his comments. Reinsdorf has donated to standard Republicans and Democrats.

I’ve found life is much more enjoyable by not focusing on the politics of the entertainment arena. They are entitled to their opinion. If I like their product, I’m not going to let that dissuade me from enjoying it…..with some limited exceptions. (Sinead O’Connor RIP)

That photo of a beer and the ballpark reminds me of a field trip with my students to Wrigley Field. Years ago, we took 150 fourteen year old students and five teachers to Wrigley Field. Sat in right field seats.
All of a sudden, a vendor hands me a beer. I said, I didn’t order this. Where did this come from? The vendor pointed to the boys sitting rows behind . They were waving and smiling. I waved back and thanked they for the gesture and placed the beer under my seat.
Never took a sip as I would have been fired from my teaching job for sure.
Fun at the ball park.

Game Theory is game theory.
It does not matter if it is politics, poker, baseball, Risk, dodge ball, or crypto.

Maybe try to balance things out by thinking if Laura. I’d hate to see our loyalty to teams devolve into a right/left decision.
- Grand Old Party - Wednesday, Oct 1, 25 @ 11:55 am:
Throughout their long history Cubs have almost always had Republican owners. Here are some examples:
President William Howard Taft’s half-brother once owned a controlling interest in the team. Big Bill Thompson was the club president for a brief time before he was elected mayor. William Wrigley, Jr., was an active Republican. The Chicago Tribune was, once upon a time, a conservative GOP leaning newspaper. The Ricketts are divided in politics. Laura is a Democrat. Her brothers are Republicans.

And then there are the Green Bay Packers… community owned 1923. They won’t let that happen again.

===community owned 1923===
That’s such a scam. All they get is a piece of paper.
- James of Little Italy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 25 @ 12:19 pm:
Sorry Rich, but you are wrong. It’s a poison pill to keep them in Green Bay. It has worked. You can’t deny that.
- Downstate - Wednesday, Oct 1, 25 @ 12:42 pm:
“All they get is a piece of paper.”
I once struck up a conversation with a stranger on a ski lift and asked, “So, what do you do?”
He responded, “Well, I’m an NFL owner.”
I was stunned, I looked at him a little closer (not that I know that many owners by sight) and said, “Wow! Which team?”
“Green Bay Packers!”
Being able to deliver that line would be worth the price of ‘that piece of paper’.
