Unclear on the concept

* Unless and until Nazis are given protected class status under the state’s public accommodation laws, then this is a ridiculously horrible take…

Not to mention the entire premise triggers Godwin’s Law. So, the Tribune automatically loses the argument right away. And, man, take a look at their ratio. Whew. Gonna be a long, brutal day at the ivory tower.

* Also…

Maybe Proft should buy the Tribune. What a shame, the once might Chicago Tribune with a rich history of great writers and newspaper people would publish an editorial like that. Sheeesh

  2. - Yiddishcowboy - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:32 am:

Trib Editorial Board = completely “meshugenah”

  3. - Jerry - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:33 am:

But the Tribune Editorial Board isn’t in charge!

Seriously though, a ridiculous and wholly offensive analogy. Who’s in charge over there, anyway?

  4. - NoGifts - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:33 am:

The intern’s supervisor is out on a holiday vacation? LOL

  5. - Yiddishcowboy - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:34 am:

Or, I should say “meshuga” to be grammatically correct.

  6. - Not Rich - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:35 am:

Not surprised by the foolishness of this from the Trib. After all, we know that this out of touch entity is still going to endorse MR I AM NOT IN CHARGE next year..

  7. - People Over Parties - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:37 am:

    What an absurd analogy.

  8. - Anonymous - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:39 am:

The Trib has a poor take. But Mitchell also misses the mark.

Wedding cake decoration does have some artistry/expressive component (as much, or more so that something like stripping and nude dancing, which are Supreme Court recognized 1st Am expressive activities). In Mitchell’s example, the lunch counter probably isn’t doing art on top of the lunches that they serve (each BLT is the same as every other regardless of who buys it).

The baker might well be required to sell standard items to anyone who wishes to buy them (i.e. undecorated, or decorated from a “menu” of standard styles), but requiring the baker to decorate in a particular way would appear to bring the 1st Am into it.

  9. - Chicago 20 - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:41 am:

Should anyone be forced to subscribe to a newspaper with an editorial board such as this?

  10. - Annonin' - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:42 am:

Does Katrina get tossed for this one?

  11. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:50 am:

The Tribune’s Edit Board has evolved into a commenter on the Illinois Policy Institute’s Facebook page.

Maybe I shoulda said devolved, but where they both are now, intellectually, the IPI Commenters and the Trib’s Edit Board, it’s a tossup at times who ranks above who.

  12. - Thomas Paine - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:54 am:

It is really sad that the Chicago Tribune editorial board, which is supposed to be the grown-up, deep thinkers of the conservative movement has so little understanding of the fundamentals of civil rights in our state.

  13. - Moe Berg - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:54 am:

A couple of days ago they were endorsing the federal GOP tax bill that will badly hurt states like IL, lower income and middle class taxpayers, too. IL Dem candidates would be crazy to go before this ed board to seek its endorsement. Like getting endorsed by Fox “News”. Too bad for the reporters whose work is wrapped with the dead fish of the kooky editorialists.

  14. - Lunchbox - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 11:59 am:

I’ve been getting the Sunday Trib for free since October 1st (trying to “win” me back.) I’m calling and cancelling it as soon as I get home. Add this to the Gary Johnson endorsement on a large list of bad takes.

  15. - anon2 - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:02 pm:

Businesses open to the public have a right to reject a particular design, but not simply refuse service based upon race, sex, religion, or national origin.

  16. - Michelle Flaherty - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:04 pm:

As a white male, Governor Rauner will have nothing more to say about this.

  17. - JS Mill - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:10 pm:

    Nazi’s = Two people in love ??

What in the heck are they talking about?

  18. - Christopher - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:12 pm:

Rather that the best the Editorial Board can do, this seems like the worst. Your opinion is worthless.

  19. - Perrid - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:20 pm:

I personally think that the bakeries et. al. should just take the customer’s money, but since a wedding cake is (very, very tangentially) associated with the idea of marriage, which is both secular and religious, I do see a difference between refusing to serve black people and refusing to “participate” in a “religious” ceremony you don’t believe in. Note I have to use quotes because you have to stretch the meanings of both words just a little to get there. The Nazi angle is just asking for trouble though, not neccessary.

  20. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:26 pm:

They’d have a point if there was such a thing as being born a Nazi.

  21. - Dude Abides - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:32 pm:

What am embarrassment the Tribune has become for Chicago and Illinois. That’s just a terrible analogy to make.

  22. - @MisterJayEm - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:32 pm:

Once again, the Tribune Editorial Board’s take is unadulterated hot garbage.

And once again, the Tribune’s genuinely high-quality reporting is needlessly tarnished for being published in the same newspaper.

    – MrJM

  23. - Dome Gnome - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:39 pm:

This makes for a passable Facebook comment, at best.

  24. - hmmm - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:43 pm:

The Trib strikes again. Rep Mitchell’s response is spot on.

  25. - Thomas Paine - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 12:49 pm:

    Rich -

Seems like a rare Godwin’s Law twofer.

Not only comparing gay people to Nazis

But also equating Jewish disdain for Nazis to Nazi disdain for gays.

That the Tribune would try to use one group target by the Nazis to defend discrimination against another group discriminated against by the Nazis is not something I could have imagined in this lifetime.

We will see if the Anti-Defamation League weighs in. I hope so.

  26. - Anonymous - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 1:00 pm:

Kind of odd they would use the swastika as an example when their beloved Colonel McCormick was s Nazi sympathizer.

  27. - Ahoy! - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 1:26 pm:

The Tribune is making a comparison of a hate group and gay marriage?

  28. - Last Bull Moose - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 1:34 pm:

Terrible analogy. Should a Muslim baker have to put the Star of David on a Jewish cake? This gives the baker religious and political reasons to object.

  29. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 1:37 pm:

How can anyone remotely equate consenting gay adults to Nazis, and worse, why?

  30. - Just Me - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 1:58 pm:

Somebody should be fired for posting this.

  31. - JoanP - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 2:06 pm:

    @ Perrid -

Guess you don’t remember the days when people justified refusing service to African-Americans because “God didn’t want the races to mix”. Religious excuses for segregation in places of public accommodation were rampant.

    It is the same thing.

  32. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 2:06 pm:

=== Religious excuses for segregation in places of public accommodation were rampant===

    Yep.

  33. - Northsider - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 2:13 pm:

The best take I’ve seen yet on this subject comes from Shahed Amanullah:

“Tired of people invoking Muslims in the same-sex wedding cake case. Muslims regularly sell you alcohol, drive you home when you’re drunk, and open their hotels to unmarried couples without imposing their beliefs on you.”

  34. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 2:29 pm:

    Annonin’ we can only hope.

  35. - wordslinger - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 2:37 pm:

    They’re lightweights.

  36. - Trapped in the 'burbs - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 3:01 pm:

Once again, the Tribune being the Tribune. The worst part is that there isn’t a single person there that understands just how low they sunk.

  37. - Griffin - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 3:05 pm:

==“Tired of people invoking Muslims in the same-sex wedding cake case. Muslims regularly sell you alcohol, drive you home when you’re drunk, and open their hotels to unmarried couples without imposing their beliefs on you.”==

This is irrelevant. There are also plenty of Christian bakers who would go ahead and do the cake at issue in Masterpiece. It does not negate the free speech rights of the minority who exercise them.

  38. - IrishJohn - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 3:05 pm:

Maybe it wasn’t the editorial board’s fault. Maybe it was their lawyer that tweeted it. ;-D

  39. - wordslinger - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 3:05 pm:

–The worst part is that there isn’t a single person there that understands just how low they sunk.–

Have some drinks at the Goat with some Trib reporters. Embarrassment about the tronc edit board and a certain grievance-peddling columnist is not uncommon, particularly in instances when it’s obvious that they haven’t read the news pages.

  40. - Wensicia - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 3:54 pm:

At first, I thought this was satire.
    SNL should quote them.

  41. - Last Bull Moose - Thursday, Dec 7, 17 @ 5:49 pm:

Some Muslims don’t care. Some do.

When I lived under Sharia law, gay wedding cakes were not an issue. Homosexual intercourse was a chopping offense. Saving grace was that proving it without a confession was extremely difficult.
