A look back at last week’s extraordinary federal raid

Posted in:

* I’ve seen this same sort of hot take in other places. This particular version is from Jeanne Ives’ “Breakthrough Ideas” newsletter

[Last] week’s drama started early on Tuesday morning when ICE agents descended on a run-down apartment building in Chicago’s south shore neighborhood. They broke into apartments, rustled people out of bed, including children, held them until they could confirm citizenship status, and arrested 37 illegals, including suspects connected to the Tren de Aragua gang, who have been terrorizing the community.

The Left focused on apartments that were busted into and people detained temporarily to determine their status. Like it or not, ICE agents have broad authority to target and detain people they suspect are here illegally. This website explains in detail what they can do. For example, “The INA grants ICE agents the authority to question any person they believe to be a noncitizen about their right to be or remain in the U.S. This is a broad power that doesn’t require any specific suspicion of wrongdoing.”

* From that last link Ives herself provided

Reflecting some of these Fourth Amendment constraints, DHS regulations provide that an immigration officer may question an individual so long as the officer “does not restrain the freedom of an individual, not under arrest, to walk away.”

The full DHS regulation is here.

* Gov. Pritzker over the weekend

Jake Tapper: The federal agents this week carrying out this massive raid on this apartment complex in Chicago, reportedly, they used drones, helicopters, military style vehicles, a Border Patrol officer told The New York Times. And snipers rappelled down to the roof of the building during the raid from a helicopter. What more can you tell us about this?

Pritzker: Well, let me also mention that the Border Patrol shouldn’t be there either. They’re claiming that the shores of Lake Michigan are the border of the United States, and therefore they should be in Chicago. They belong on the borders, truly on the borders.

The feds claim enhanced governmental rights of searches and seizures 100 miles from a border. Most of the US population lives within that zone. But, geographically, Chicago does not

Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake located fully in the United States

The feds claim that since the Northeastern tip of Lake Michigan is within 100 miles of the Canadian border, then all cities within 100 miles of the lake are within its zone of influence. I’m told some discussions are being held about challenging the federal interpretation in court.

  1. Jeannie Ives was wrong again. Go figure. The Pope himself spoke out about the ICE raids and detentions, calling them inhumane.

The Pope is right, Ives is wrong.

You should be asking how many were ripped out of bed and detained and NOT charged. You’re defending the indefensible.

You did note the 10 cars that blocked and rammed ICE vehicles. Chicago PD refused to respond per the Chief of Patrol. You did hear about that.

  14. Exactly how should a raid that results in 37 arrests on what was allegedly a hotbed of criminal activity have been handled to your satisfaction?

Govern what happened over the weekend the fact no shots were fired was a miracle.

so no What are the cases of wrongful arrests who will be getting millions of dollars in settlements in the future?

Lets try it be factual and not hyperbolic

Being detained temporarily and being charged with a crime are very different

Comment by Harrison Monday, Oct 6, 25 @ 12:42 pm

  15. I’m sure the Tren de Aragua boats are coming across the Erie Canal thru the Great Lakes and dropping off the gang members in the playpen by Lake Point Towers. (sarcasm intentional).

  17. I get that ICE is used to working in a clandestine manner and that they don’t do well in the light. But I hope that a retired ICE agent or down the roadd when one of the agents involved in this writes the inevitable book on this situation they can clarify if this is how ICE normally treats people in raids or how many degrees off this is.

  19. The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects,[a] against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

There is no exception to breaking into a US Citizens home because they might live near someone you suspect of not having legal status. It’s unconstitutional and it’s wrong.

Lies, lies & more lies. The video is out homie. It shows a Black SUV behind an unmarked White pickup truck with Cosplaying police lights in the back window. Video clearing shows everyone waiting for a Semi to pass in a one lane construction area. It passes guy doesn’t move She pushes on the gas to move him. Another UNMARKED SUV goes behind her she backs up and also pushes them then drives. The driver was indeed a woman.

If I were a hispanic woman sandwich between two unmarked cars full of White men & guns who are not verified federal officials, I too would drive if my life depended on it.

Must be nice to walk around the world and not worry if you will be shot, assaulted or killed for the color of your skin or your sex.

You just don’t get it do you? You’re truly ok with the federal government breaking down the doors of every single unit in an apartment building, ripping people out of their beds and detaining them and asking questions later? What is wrong with you? That is the kind of actions that happen in countries run by dictators. I for the life of me cannot understand why you and those like you are so willing to be ok with what is going on. It saddens me that this is the type of country you want the US to be.

  28. One of the residents who remains is Alicia Brooks, a 33-year-old American citizen. By her account, at around 1am on the night of the raid she heard a helicopter right outside her window on the fifth floor. “I started to get my key, and I was grabbed,” she says. “I was zip-tied in front of me and escorted outside the building.” Dozens of men in military-style uniforms carrying assault rifles evacuated the complex “like it was on fire”, she says. They lined up the inhabitants outside, zip-tying the hands of the adults, and put them on buses. By law, to question somebody, immigration officers must have reason to think they could be an illegal immigrant. To arrest somebody, they need probable cause. Ms Brooks, who is black, with an American accent, says she repeatedly asked officers why she was being arrested, and pointed out her citizenship. Nobody asked her any questions. When she continued to object to her arrest, an officer knocked her to the ground, removed the zip-ties and replaced them with handcuffs, locked as tightly as they would go. By the time she was released, together with several other citizens, she says the sun was coming up.

  31. On the 100-mile border zone definition, I’m tempted to type a long screed in allcaps. I’ll stick to one word: FINALLY

It is specifically listed as 100 miles from an “external boundary” - i.e., not a port of entry or other definition.

    What’s an external boundary?

    ***
    § 287.1 Definitions.
    (a)

    (1) External boundary. The term external boundary, as used in section 287(a)(3) of the Act, means the land boundaries and the territorial sea of the United States extending 12 nautical miles from the baselines of the United States determined in accordance with international law.
    ***

Lake Michigan is “internal waters,” not a “territorial sea.”

What is happening is lawless in any event and needs to be treated as such. But Border Patrol’s interpretation of expanded authorities in IL truly does need to be challenged.

  32. =====Rich its all part of the same event. You did note respond to the 2nd part. Where CPD was ordered not to respond to a someone needing help. Is that ok with you?====

Wow! It is sad people are so brainwashed they are trying to change actual time. He most definitely is from the burbs. Bud, two different days, two different neighborhoods. One Black, one Latino. Even USCIS has horrific video bragging about each event.

Also Body cam footage & CBS proved by video ICE has been making false 911 calls in Bridgeview. Pretty sure they checked the cams and made decisions.

So WHAT DO YOU CARE?? ICE is not throwing chemicals and inciting rioting in your neighborhoods. Funny how they are literally NO ONE ELSE but where Latinos are at? I really don’t want to hear from Steve in Naperville or the Northside.

Comment by Trinity Monday, Oct 6, 25 @ 2:17 pm

  33. On the state investigating federal actions for potential state law violations: FINALLY

It shouldn’t be limited to children, but then I guess DCFS and Human Services are a lot less conflicted than ISP, re: joint task forces and operations with Homeland Security, etc.

Comment by Stephanie Kollmann Monday, Oct 6, 25 @ 2:21 pm

  34. ===But Border Patrol’s interpretation of expanded authorities in IL truly does need to be challenged.===

Agreed. But now is the time to make a fortune running bootleg maple syrup into Michigan from Ontario. Nobody is watching the border. They’re watching the people strolling on the River Walk.

  35. ===Agreed. But now is the time to make a fortune running bootleg maple syrup into Michigan from Ontario.

A couple tribes out west from both sides of the border are creating a sort of free trade zone on their tribal lands. No idea what is legal in tribal law, but I’m amused at the thought of it.

  36. Each Apt. is a separate dwelling unit, as such they needed either a warrant to enter each unit or probable cause for each separate unit. Why should your apartment be raided b/c a neighboring unit is occupied by an alleged criminal. Easy to accept a violation of folks rights to be safe from unreasonable search and seizure, until it happens to you or someone you care about.

Comment by dbs Monday, Oct 6, 25 @ 2:52 pm

  37. Also, amazing how they determined how there was or wasn’t anyone they needed to take, based on whether they could get the door down easily enough, since a guy whose door they couldn’t get down was left alone.
