Jackson says he didn’t formally endorse Robin Kelly

Posted in:

* Tribune

After U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly said this week that Rep. Jonathan Jackson was among 18 members of the Congressional Black Caucus endorsing her Democratic primary bid to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, Jackson announced he is not backing Kelly and instead remaining neutral in the race.

Despite having “deep respect and admiration” for Kelly, whom he described in a statement late Wednesday as “thoughtful, hardworking, and a strong advocate for the people of Illinois,” Jackson said, “As a general practice, I have decided it is better not to make endorsements during Democratic primaries.”

The Jackson nonendorsement comes at an inopportune time for Kelly as she attempts to ramp up her bid in what is expected to be a hard-fought race to succeed Durbin, who is retiring at the end of his term. […]

Jackson “was expressing his general support and admiration for Congresswoman Kelly, which may have been interpreted as a full endorsement,” spokesman Robert Patillo wrote in an email.

Rep. Kelly has endorsements from several members of the Congressional Black Caucus, but none of those members represent Illinois.

  2. JJ endorsement/non-endorsement of Robin Kelly: “Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”. Kelly’s got a pretty small chance against Stratton, and Stratton has a pretty small chance against Raja.

    JJ was probably like “Nope, I’m good…”

    Ah yes, the classic endorsement without endorsement being clarified as not really intended to be an endorsement. Both parties are at fault, but ya know, let’s see the Congress woman’s receipts.

  5. Illinois going to lose a lot of seniority come 2026. Not good.

  6. “Oops.”

    That’s exactly what I want to say.

  7. I think Robin Kelly and Donna Miller are going to surprise a lot of people. They’ve done the ground work and were phenomenal Kamala surrogates. Jackson needs to worry about what his constituents are saying about how his office is run, not endorsements.

  8. Speaking of seniority, Lauren Underwood’s best move is to stay out of the Senate race and move up the House ranks. If the Dems retake the chamber, I’d think she’d be in line for a committee chair. If Underwood stays longer, a party leadership position would be a good bet. She’s personable, smart and works hard. Illinois 14 is lucky to have her.

  9. Seniority is not the coin of the realm it was in yesteryear. It’s all about fundraising, TV soundbites, video skills and, of course, clicks. You want to be a chairman? Raise a boat load of money and pay off leadership. No need to wait your turn.

  10. This stinks. Even if Congresswoman Kelly has receipts (which I’m guessing she does), this puts her in the position of calling out a colleague for changing his mind.
