  1. Went to the Secretary of State office in Schaumburg to renew my driver’s license. Apart from not being able to book an appointment for a week and a half, everything went very smoothly and everyone there was friendly and courteous. They’ve been improving for a long time, but I still have PTSD from prior visits in the 90s when the staff was aggressively hostile.

  3. Congratulations to the journalists honored last night at the Illinois Press Association conference for their achievements in reporting, editing, opinion writing, and page design. Tom Loewy and Tom Martin of the Dispatch-Argus / Quad City Times were named was named Reporter of the Year and Editor of the Year, respectively, for 2024. Plenty of familiar bylines from the Statehouse and City Hall press rooms received honors for their beat work, too!

  4. Lots of people across America consuming Illinois’ official State Snack as we watch the war on social media unfold.

My bet is that there will be yet another reconcilliation bill, but the problem seems to be that 1) they are now counting on tariffs as permanent revenue and that will freak out the business sector, and 2) It is not clear what they could possibly cut that they have not cut already.

This seems like a. eerily similar situation to where Rauner was, except “Working on a Grand Bargain” is now the “Big Beautiful Bill.” The problem is “Math.”

My guess is that they end up cutting presciption drug reimbursements for Medicare and Medicaid, and that could really impact Illinois.

  5. It occurred to me this morning that it had been a long time since Wordslinger passed, June 11, 2019, his obituary says.
He was a lot of fun to spar with, even though we rarely agreed. His debate skills were exceptional and he represented his positions well. I enjoyed the banter with him.
Today, prayers for him and his family.

  6. Illinois Community Credit Union has merged with Credit Union 1. (There’s more than one — this CU1 is headquartered in Rantoul). We’re in the final stages of transitioning this week. It’s been going well, but I did get a shock while changing routing for transfers with two other financial institutions, in that they now use third-parties for the operation that require sharing bank login information.

Can you dig it? We’ve gotten it pounded into our heads over the years never to reveal logins to anyone. Now suddenly it’s fine? So far I’ve found one work-around, and in the other instance questioned it and found it was actually optional. That’s fortunate, because otherwise I’d go back to paper checks to avoid this data breach disaster in the making.

  8. More truckloads of supplies delivered to the Holiday Inn on South Cicero. The hotel has been transformed into a shelter for homeless migrants.

How much does this cost the taxpayers? Which governmental entity is paying for it all?

  9. Mary Miller being an embarassment as usual. This time attacking Muslims over a Sikh man’s prayer.
