Okay, Quinn may not be any kind of a great speaker, but he’s not trying to rewrite his personal history. If I have to hear one more word about how the GOP candidates are just regular folk I’m going to lose it. Proft at least admitted that it’s a farce. How they can say this stuff with straight faces is beyond me. The GOP has never been about the people. They’re all about being the chosen ones to lead the poor rabble. Who’s kidding who here?

I was not able to hear the governor’s speech but am dissappointed that none of the commentators have yet discussed the substanitive portions of the speech. Oh yeah, there weren’t any!

That speech was an insult to Illinois.
When Pat Quinn had the chance to lay out his vision for the state he decides to punt? Even that is a generous description. It was 2nd down and he called a “pooch punt”.
The elephant in the room for Democrats is that if Pat Quinn wins the primary there will be a lot more elephants in the room, specifically the House & Senate chambers… and every county board room… and the rooms of courthouses around the State. Pat Quinn is walking disaster for Democrats, let alone the State.

The Steve Martin video does not remind me of yesterday. In his song Steve never mentions vets returning from war or some general he met in Afghanistan or soy beans or two hundred other things that have nothing to do with the reason for Quinn to be addressing the state. Okay, maybe the muppets in the audience…

This was a state of the state, not the budget address, which will be delivered in february. It is during the budget address that th governor lays out his pecific budget. So for those of you saying that yesterdays speech was light on budgetary substance, you get that next month.
The governor did what he needed to do,and didn’t serve up and fodder to be used against him in the primary. Good work, governor.

I did not have an opportunity to watch it live, because I was firmly entrenched in an effort to execute a capitalist model of revenue generation, which; as a non-government payroller, was entirely motivated and directed by the survival instinct operating in over-drive.
When I did get the chance to watch it last night however my first thought was that “improv” works well in comedy, but when applied to what should otherwise be a very serious subject matter it not only falls flat, but actually has a deleterious effect on the sober; clear thinking audience, which has a grasp on the gravity of the circumstances in which we are operating. Perhaps the consensus is that the sober; clear thinking segment is a shrinking demographic in this day and age, and that might be difficult to argue against at this point.
To ramble on and on like that, without directly addressing the “elephant in the room” and laying out some clear direction of executing a solution is crazy. I recognize that the Budget Address is designed to create the opportunity to present the field level battle plan of execution, but the least he could have done here, was to give a 40,000 foot view of the broad based policy themes that would guide us towards the promised land.
Given the Primary Election Day, I think you missed a golden opportunity to post another video clip; of that Family Classic from the early 90’s classic Ground Hog Day! At least in so doing, you could demonstrate some justification for the ongoing appropriation for the Illinois Film Office, while at the same time
promote local tourism. Woodstock could be a great place to watch the primary election returns, because it offers a backdrop for what it could be like for Quinn, and the rest of us, to relive the same days over and over again, right through this upcoming session of the General Assembly, where nothing gets done because there is a General Election at hand that follows. No sense in doing anything meaningful until the Veto Session, when the legislative makeup has been determined, and perhaps Quinn become a lame-duck upon which to blame the “new revenue” enhancements on.
The effort yesterday howeve; while perhaps charming to some, was completely bereft of any sense of the true “state of the state”, and only serves to validate the complete metamorphosis of Pat Quinn, from the “maverick reformer” to the opportunistic politician.
He has found himself in the position of being the “Accidental Governor, and the GA tried to give him a soft landing last year, but for their own self interest instead. Now having drunk from the cup of power and influence, he is innebriated if he thinks that they are going to do him any favors if he seals the deal to have full authority for a four year term.
Now that the people have seen just what can happen when the unexpected takes place, that is all the evidence they will need to stay home; or God forbid actually vote Republican in November, after Rickey Hendon wins the Lt. Gov. race. Quinn’s ascendancy has cast a brght light on what was previosuly considered a meaningless constitutional office; but for an emergency situation, which the impeachment no doubt certainly became politically for the Democrats.
If the citizenry in this state has become so mindlessly robotic to pull the D lever, with Hollywood Hendon just a heartbeat away, then I have to say that the budget deficit is the least of our problems as a Republic.
After watching that speech, if Quinn holds on through Groundhog Day, I think the only Republican that might not be able to beat him would be Andy Martin, and that may only be because the pedophile voting block would probably galvanize against him for the way he has disparaged Congressman Foley.
God help us all if we are going to be subjected to aimless leadership going forward that is not only incapabale of leading the way, but given the speech yesterday it seems more likely that he is unable to even find the way, and we have seen first hand the effect of a vacuum in leadership can unleash when we have to rely solely on the General Assembly to chart our course.

Maybe the worst state of the state I have heard ever. This speech is traditionally used to set his vision, establish a theme, provide some big picture plan of where he wants to take this state. On all 3 counts he failed miserably. We did not need budget specifics but he did need to lay the groundwork for what he feels the budget necessities need to be. Again a miserable failure. Hopefully he will decide to write something down after the primary.

Things I learned from the State of the State address.
1) Caulk will bring us together.
2) Jesse White is awesome. I mean, really awesome.
3) We live in the Land of Lincoln.
4) Illinois will not have high speed rail. It will have super high speed rail.
5) Dr. Angela Phillips is, in fact, a doctor.
6) Soy Boy. That’s right. Soy Boy.
7) The Governor wants to build things. Green things.
8) People come to Illinois to see golden eagles fly over the Illinois River.
9) No other Illinois Governor has taken advantage of Super 8’s generous frequent customer benefits.
10) There might be a problem with the state budget.

Seriously, how can you have a state-of-the-state address and virtually ignore the biggest issue facing the governor and GA, the budget deficit?
This stuff about next month’s budget address is spin. He just ducked it because he’s running out the clock on the primary. That’s not “bold” leadership. “Make No Little Plans?” How about make no plans at all?

Re: the report that the Speaker commented that the speech was supposed to be only 40 minutes but was running at 1:21. Gee, I guess all those legislative calendars in the past several years that said the session adjournment was set for May 31, but sessions went well into June and beyond must have slipped his mind (the former Governor’s special session calls notwithstanding).

Quinn is a classic micro manager that can’t manage. Where was the staff review of his presentation? He seems to pull all the decisions about his actions unto himself. Quinn provided us an inside view of his “State of Mind” which charitably can be described as unfocused.

You have it exactly wrong. Democrats want to annoint themselves to be the ones who lead you and choose your healthcare, choose your school, spend your money and pick which banks succeed (Goldman) and fail (Bear).
The conservative messages is to take power out of government and give power and freedom back to the people. Proft could not have made it more clear than when he proposed the “univeral clout” program that would give scholarships to the poor students trapped in the misery of the Chicago Public School System.
You missed Proft’s point. He was saying that biographies and personal stories don’t matter. Policy choices do.

Quinn has also proved to be a gambling man. He’s gambled not to lead the State this year, for the possibility of getting to lead it for the next four. And I guess he’s hoping that the public is willing to gamble on what that “leadership” would mean - or that he has the capacity to do it.
Yesterday’s speech was fine for a Lt. Governor stump speech, but not a State of the State address in such dire times. Should we assume he’ll be focused and effective if he has four years? Can we afford to make this gamble?

Sorry Conservative Guy, I respectfully disagree. Poor students trapped in CPS…did you notice that Dillard made a particular point that he had gone to public schools? Why? Because a crucial part of the American myth is equality of opportunity, that anyone can achieve prosperity if they work hard enough. Without public schools there are no opportunities for those with no money. My friend taught at one of the cheapest private schools (Catholic) in Chicago–$6K a year. Do the math if you’re only making $30,000 and have two kids. And that’s the cheapest one. Giving up on public education means creating a permanent underclass.
That aside–since we’re having a funny guy flashback, does anyone remember the SNL skit when they showed a woman, a hispanic man (woman? can’t remember) and a black man proudly declaring they were Republicans? The camera pulled back to show the three minorities against a huge crowd of old white men.
