* Gov. Quinn and Sen. Brady were the keynote speakers at a luncheon for the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association and Illinois Retail Merchants Association today in a downtown Springfield hotel ballroom.
Quinn revealed his intention to push lawmakers to approve a sales tax holiday. The move is meant to tone down the school supplies bill parents face. The Tribune has more…
Taxpayers would get a break on paying the state’s share of the sales tax — which is 5 percent — from Aug. 6 through Aug. 15 under legislation that advanced in the House today. State sales tax would be waived for clothing, school supplies, sporting goods and computer accessories like flash drives and printers.
Quinn also said the proposed tax amnesty would likely be in the final budget package, and said he prefers public charter schools over school vouchers.
The governor also took the opportunity to take a few jabs at Brady. Though he declared himself a cheerleader for the state, Quinn said his opponent is the exact opposite. The AP reports…
Gov. Pat Quinn says his Republican challenger is “running down” the state of Illinois.
Quinn says state Sen. Bill Brady should stop criticizing Illinois’ business climate. The Chicago Democrat calls it disappointing.
Quinn says the governor should be a cheerleader for Illinois workers and the business climate, which Quinn says is strong.
The governor spent roughly 12 minutes with reporters after the luncheon. Here’s the first part of that question-answer session…
Brady struck down Quinn’s comments and fired back by calling the governor a populist for introducing the sales tax holiday instead of lowering the sales tax on a more permanent basis. Here’s some of Brady’s remarks to reporters after his speech…
1:30 a.m. I just realized the video embedded was of Gov. Quinn when I meant to post Sen. Brady. My apologies. The correct video is now posted.
* Quinn also said he would have to review Sen. Sandoval’s initiative to move the White Sox’s spring training camp out of Arizona (mentioned in today’s QOTD). Have a look…

The ship is (and has for many years) been heading full stream ahead right at the iceberg and the politicians are giving us … gimmicks and sound bite quibbling.

–Quinn revealed his intention to push lawmakers to approve a sales tax holiday for a day.–
If this happens, stay away from the WalMart at Roosevelt and Des Plaines in Forest Park. It’s looney-tunes on a good day, but around the holidays and back to school, some of those folks will shop til they drop — you. Remember the violence on Black Friday and Christmas Eve a couple of years back?
I can’t imagine the attitudes on a tax holiday.

So theState is out of revenue, and the solution is to take some of our inadequate sales tax revenue and reduce it further….while asking to hit those same shoppers with an income tax increase….
Seems a bit like repoing someones car but offeing to leave them the pack of gum from the ashtray.

What does Brady exactly mean when he’s calling Quinn about a populist? As far as I can tell, he’s accusing the governor of giving the people what they want. Brady just seems lost now that he can’t only accuse Quinn of raising taxes.
Maybe if Quinn had proposed to reinstate dog euthanasia Brady would have been more supportive.

Quinn needs to understand that the business climate in Illinois is not strong. With our fiscal situation, our unemployment insurance and workman’s compensation system we cannot compete with our neighboring states, let alone global competition, on jobs. We over tax our businesses and wonder why jobs and people are leaving.
Add that everything in this state is a shakedown for money and you don’t have a good business climate.

Does anyone else find it odd that Governor Quinn keeps saying that education is his number one priority, and yet the budget he introduced slashed over a billion dollars out of the classrooms? If a budget is a statement of your priorities, what does that say about Quinn and education?

Who’s leaving and where are they going? Ford just committed, didn’t they? They seem to know what they’re doing these days.
Cat had a good forecast the other day for increased production.
I’m not saying things are great, but I’m curious as to where the state utopias are. As far as I can tell, North Dakota is doing about the best these days.

We over tax our businesses and wonder why jobs and people are leaving
So, they are all leaving to our neighboring states that have HIGHER taxes?

Brady’s words about the business climate are a hard look in the mirror Governor. Learn to deal with it, or do something about it.

What alternate reality is Quinn living in? Our state’s business climate is strong? Brady is “running down the state”? Cripes, somebody PLEASE slip this man a Reality Latte with a shot of WAKE THE H*LL UP! This is just the latest in a LOOOOOOONG line of delusional nonsense that should prove to anybody smarter than a Clinton Lake Amoeba that Dem’s in Illinois have lost touch with ANY sense of what this state and it’s business’ are going through.

Furthermore, temporarily instituting a tax holiday for Back-to-School, while simultaneously seeking increases in Income Tax? Huh? That reminds me of the old Native American quote. “Only the government would cut one foot off the bottom of a blanket, re-sew it on the top, and make you think you had a bigger blanket.”

It’s not just taxes - it’s the entire regulatory burden, which is certainly not decreasing here in Illinois.
I personally know and work with a central Illinois company, virtually all service oriented, and they pay a pretty decent buck for their people. Tough place to work, but they are not cheap in how they treat their staff. From 2004, they have grown staffwise from approx. 800 to over 3,000 - with less than 100 of those new jobs being located here in IL. Jobs for MO, IN, TX - you bet, but here in IL, not so much.
If the people who started the firm didn’t still have roots here in IL, they’d be 100% GONE. Know them personally, they don’t even want to waste their time talking to the State of IL anymore.
IMO, Pat Quinn talking up the IL business climate remains me of a rabid Bears fan cheering when the Bears are down 59-3 and it’s still early in the 3rd quarter….

Uh Governor Quinn,
You attacking Sen. Brady is pretty shallow. YOU are the Governor. Your party controls the house and senate. And you’ve accomplished nothing. Attacking Brady makes you look pretty shallow.
If you’ve got the answers - deliver them. Complaining about Brady while you can’t get your own party to go along with your plans makes you look petty and innefective.
