Further, … my father never contemplates how political decisions will affect me, … the Democrat Attorney General of Illinois…

Mike Madigan’s father was a leader in the Cook County Democratic Party. Did we ever call him Daddy’s Little Boy?

How about Mayor Daley, Dan Hynes, Randy Ramey…anyone think Mark Beaubien would be an officeholder if not for his family connections?

  57. “I am here to announce a suit I have filed against the speaker of the house for repeatedly violating the constitution I have a sworn duty to uphold.” Daddy, you’ve been served!

YDD…It is not sexist, it is a point of FACT.

When you are a 44 year old who has never had a single accomplishment without banking on the fact your father will crush anyone who opposes him, it is fair game.

When you have served two terms as AG and failed to do anything about the most corrupt governor in the history of the United States (even though you said you would have indicted George Ryan)because your daddy endorsed him, it is fair game.

When you refuse to uphold your sworn duty to protect the constitution, law, and citizens of the state because your daddy is the one violating all of the above, it is fair game.

When Lisa Madigan makes a decision on her own without being told what to do by her father, I will stop with the daddy comments. Most people when they hit 14 or so stop asking daddy what to every day of eheir life and stop calling him Daddy. Until Lisa stops asking daddy every move to make like a 12 year old, it is fair game.

  60. Must be a full moon or something because I completely agree with YDD today too.

Women for generations to come will thank the Madigans for their public service and for paving the way to top public office in Illinois.

While it’s true she has enjoyed opportuntities that other young female lawyers might not have been able to achieve in such a short period of time, she has done a great job as State Senator and as our state’s top lawyer.

I thank both MJM & Lisa for stepping up and for proving gender doesn’t matter in politics, in fact, in cases of gridlock like we are experiencing, it’s an advantage to have high-placed female constitutional officers.

Comment by rdb Thursday, May 13, 10 @ 1:39 pm

  63. @wordslinger:

The repeated use of the term “daddy”, “girl”, and “little girl” is grossly sexist, I think even you should be able to admit it.

Like it or not, in politics — just like medicine, law, business, law enforcement, military service, nearly every profession — children often follow in their parent’s footsteps.

Is it worth commenting on? Maybe. Is it fair to say that Lisa Madigan wouldn’t be AG if she weren’t the daughter of Mike Madigan? Sure.

But what should be out-of-bounds is to portray her as a spoiled 12 year-old little girl under her father’s control and constantly seeking his approval.

Let’s not forget, after all, that Michael Madigan tried to convince his daughter NOT to run for the Senate, NOT to run for Attorney General, and since she’s been there, they’ve often disagreed.

In fact, if you want to make an argument, its fairer to argue that the Speaker defers to the AG, not the other way around, which is why major legislation impacting consumers rarely goes anywhere without a green light from her office.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, May 13, 10 @ 3:08 pm

  80. @phocion:

Thanks for backing me up — I think.

Like you, I don’t think that gender has anything to do with Hillary Clinton’s accomplishments as U.S. Senator or Secretary of State, nor do I think it has anything to do with Sarah Palin’s accomplishments as governor.

I was critical of those who argued Hillary Clinton wasn’t feminine enough and those who said her husband would really be running the White House. Although to be fair, Clinton’s campaign opened the door by making the “Two for the price of one” argument.

To those who argued that Palin was only handed the VP slot because she was an attractive woman, I pointed out that Dan Quayle set a pretty low bar for the GOP in filling that slot.

    @Patriot -

What exactly are the Constitutional violations and rampant corruption happening under Lisa Madigan’s nose that she is supposedly ignoring?

She successfully prosecuted State Rep. Pat Bailey, who was not only one of Madigan’s members, but also won her office thanks to Mayor Daley’s support.

The sale of the Thompson Center and issuance of the 10th casino license to Rosement, which the Speaker had supported, she successfully opposed.

In every other case that I’m aware of, she’s deferred not to the Speaker, but to the U.S. Attorney, which is what she’s supposed to do.

I’m not drinking the koolaid, just looking at the facts. I think you need to take off your tinted spectacles and look at them as well.

  88. @Irish - you may not “believe” that the Speaker defers to anyone, and in fact the media, the GOP, and others have benefited from the myth that he’s all-powerful.

He’s powerful, but no one is all powerful.

The idea that he is makes it easier for reporters and editorial boards to write over-simplified stories and opinion pieces, and easier for the GOP to write direct mail and claim that they have nothing to do with the current budget mess.

The Republicans would blame him for bad weather if they thought the press would print it.

  102. The ‘daddy stuff’ makes me uncomfortable, but not nearly like that Tribune cartoon last week…that was tough. But should we feel that way? Hey folks, its 2010. PC stuff about being extra sensitive to women should have expired. Want to be in a big job? take the same flack that men do, especially white men. I though about that cartoon afterward, and wondered if I’d been so offended if it was an ‘old daley’ & ‘new daley’ cartoon….probably not…I’d have really enjoyed it. So she has to suck it up just like men targeted for this type of snark.

By the way…where’s the righteous indignation over Sarah Palin night at topless bars. She’s not a woman?

Still like LM a lot. Wish she’d switch parties.

  103. Why does she always insist on talking to the press like this? The press is not the politician’s friend. How many times did I teach her to just give a pained smile and a, ‘you’ll find out later’?
