democrats did the same thing nationally in 2002, a cycle where they did a horrible job of misreading the environment and got killed running ads about medicare when the country was focused on terrorism.

Another ad on social issues! Well, Quinn’s internal polling and advisors must be concerned about their base, to the point where they are sticking with the social issues meme. I wonder if we will see any economy/job/deficit type ads from Quinn. If he cedes that turf to Brady, he is in big trouble.

I think the DGA is helping him shore up female moderates from the Chicago suburbs–esp. with family/medical leave and mammograms.

Great add, targets the female vote which is going to win this election for the candidate that can get it… and it probably won’t be Brady.
The biggest problem for Braddy is that this message is true.

I think it’s pretty obvious they’re working to get his women voter numbers back up. I know he’s made some strides, but Brady is so anti-women, Quinn has a lot more work to do. I saw an ad over the weekend about Brady being anti-choice.

One other thing I think is going on in both the Brady and Quinn campaigns is this:
The national parties have told both candidates to shut up and not run any ads at this time. Further advice is to restrict appearances where reporters can ask tough questions.
I think the national parties have chosen this election as very important. Both parties see weak opposing candidates, and redistricting as reasons to take over messaging in their campaigns.

I think it’s a good ad because it continues on the barrage of issues that Brady’s record puts him far outside the mainstream on (somewhat cataloged at their website: http://www.StopBillBrady.com ).
@Cincinnatus - you say this is about social issues — it’s clearly not. It even closes on “protecting our pocketbooks!”

I thought it tried to do too much. I think it would have been more effective if it just stuck to the social issues and didn’t reach with the “big corporations” meme at the end. Very broad.

Very good ad for reinforcing the liberal base.
Too bad for Quinn that there are not many of them that are not allready going to vote democratic.
This ad makes liberals and Quinn supporters feel good but does not move any numbers.

A Republican nominee would have a shot at winning on jobs and the economy if that nominee weren’t Brady, clearly a recession hurts the incumbent. But Brady is too extreme right wing on social issues and the Democrats are doing the right thing by pointing this out. I think this ad and the last one are exactly what Quinn needs, I’m giving it an A.

I think the ad is a good merger of social issues and concerns over the economy. The tying together of “candidate opposing womens’ issues” and “candidate preferring corporations over individuals” worked better than the concept would on paper.
Again, this is all stuff Brady doesn’t have a good rebuttal against. Looks like the DGA has gotten its act together.

I saw this ad over the weekend right after Brady’s ad talking about Quinn giving raises to his staff. I think it is a pretty effective ad and the two ads back to back show how this campaign will be conducted. Quinn will argue that Brady is a right wing extremist who is too scary to put in the governor’s mansion and Brady will hammer away at Blago and the bad economy. Which strategy will work? Guess we will see in November.

I must say that I found the shot of the bandana lady a bit disturbing. She was blinking, so it wasn’ta still shot,but she didn’t say anything. It would have been MUCH more effective if a “voter” had uttered the tag line. Otherwise, I liked the warm and fuzzy visuals, especially the shot with mom and baby on her tummy. Overall, it was a bit too dark and scary. (even thought that was the point).

It’s a good issue ad, but I think when the GOP starts on the schools (and the money they are owed at the end of the day they will have the suburban women)

While we already know Quinn is more interested in helping his staff and friends out with big raises while the public suffers with wage and job cuts.

Ideology-only minded, Rich? I am looking at this ad through a prism of political effectiveness in this election cycle. Recent Illinois polling results show:
Only 9% think the economy is going in the right direction.
71% say we’re in a recession.
46% say the economy is getting worse.
11% of Quinn voters view him favorably, 15% of Brady voters view him favorably.
I don’t see any polling data that shows that social issues are even on the voters map at this point. And I don’t think either candidate can have his unfavorability numbers driven much lower than they already are.
So, back to my original statement, I wonder what the motivation is to have any significant effort on the non-economic agenda is other than an all out effort to shore up the base.

What kind of politician sides with educrats and teachers unions to protect overpaid administrators and underperforming teachers at the expense of our children have an opportunity at a decent education as a foundation for their future?
and supported, a government spending spree and un-balanced budget resutling in the state’s inability to pay its doctors and hospitals, and the denial of medical services to children as a result?
It’s the same Pat Quinn who wants to take your hard earned money and use it to give $400,000 pensions to School Superintendants and $100,000 salaries to teachers that can’t teach, but refuses to give you a choice for how your tax dollars might be better directed to educate your kids

Great add. Hits home for most voters. For people upset with Quinn, it shows the alternative. The fact that the Brady people consider these basic economic matters to be “social issues” shows just how out of touch they are. For a lot of people, paying for medical care is a pretty important economic issue. Having a child and having your job when you recover is a pretty important economic issue. Since a lot of salaries are basically “minimum wage plus x” the minimum wage is an important economic issue. People who do not understand that these are economic issues just do not understand what is happening in the job market mow.

It is an emotional ad designed to scare women into voting against Bill Brady.
That is what Quinn has to do. He has to ensure that this election is between a ineffective governor, or evil incarnate, and hope enough voters fall for it.
Next we’re going to see Brady outfitted with a red silk zipper-front onesie with horns and a pitchfork throwing blind children down a well.

Wow. this add is not meant to get women on quinn’s side. It is meant to get them to stay home on election day. The DGA can clearly see women are trending towards brady in this election, and will put him over the top. But if enough independent women can stay home, quinn can continue ruining this great state.

Any thoughts about PQ begging WM for campaign money? I thought he was for the little man or woman? Considering what the folks on the left, which includes PQ, like to say about WM, That he hit WM up for money kinda contradicts this DGA in some key ways, doesn’t it.

I suggest you poll your friends and ask them if they think that insurance companies should be able to deny coverage for breast cancer prevention.
Maybe it doesn’t move a ton of voters YET.
But define Brady as the guy who sided with insurance companies over breast cancer victims.
And then in September, tell voters how much $ he took from insurance companies with thousands died of breast cancer each year.
Trust me, voters will be moved, especially when its the sister or widower of a breast cancer victim on the screen.
Yes, these are core Democratic issues, but Democrats have made them core issues and campaigned relentlessly on them because they appeal to 80% + of the voters.
This is also why Democrats are talking about Brady’s opposition to abortion rights even in the cases of rape and incest.
Wait until we see the ad featuring a rape victim or her father with their face shadowed over and voice altered to protect their identity.
Buckle Up folks!

Just remember the election is in November when you are going to have kids going to schools without music programs, more crowded classrooms and a host of other issues that will include schools screaming about the money the state owes them.
Me thinks if you do targeted direct mail on that, that is going to work (at the least keep those voters home and considering Brady’s social stands that would be a win for Brady).

7.5 out of 10. This was way better then Quinn’s last couple attempts. I do think, as someone mentioned above, that it spreads itself too thin. It would have been more effective without adding the “big corporations” theme at the end. They hit the target, but then started throwing bird shot everywhere–took away from the original hits.
I think trying to lock down the female vote is a solid strategy move for Quinn…he isn’t going to touch the voters concerned about IL’s debt/fiscal situation (unless Brady really drops the ball, or Quinn actually does something meaningful as gov).
On a related note, it is just so sad to me that Quinn is governor during one of the great fiscal and economy trials in our state’s history, and he has to run on social/cultural issues to make an impact. Sure, he tosses in some populism to spice it up (big corps! minimum wage! look at the shiny objects!!!), but if he was competent he would have a record to run on and a economic plan to push. He has nothing.

I’d give this one a C+. Quinn needs to hire the folks who did Hynes’ attack ads in the primary. I thought this one bounced around a little too much and should’ve been more narrowly focused to be truly effective. They should’ve left out the minimum wage part, as I don’t see that resonating with enough of the targeted voters.

Yes, but its only a little different. DGA certainly would have paid attention to what Quinn was running before they dropped their piece, even assuming there was absolutely no communication between the camps (I always find that to be a stretch).

It is a good ad. However, it doesn’t change the fact that Pat Quinn will more likely be on Mayor Daley’s side (and in his hip pocket) than on ours. I could see Rich whitney of the Green Party receiving 20% of the vote, perhaps even a bit more, while Cohen and the rest of them divy up about 3%. Quinn might win the election 39-38%, which will let him keep his job but insures he won’t be able to do anything of substance without going thru Daley and/or Mike Madigan.

Henry, I’m very much pro-choice but abortion (and probably other social issues) won’t be the decider for me. I want the state’s budget balanced, I want to protect as many vital state services as possible while doing that, and I will vote for someone who persuades me he can and will do that better than the other guy.
Right now I don’t see a plan from either of them to actually do that. PQ has a tax increase he can’t pass, and BB has vague spending cuts a D GA won’t pass if he’s elected. Not good enough so far.

I don’t understand all the moaning and groaning. The ad accurately reflects Brady’s public record, as Brady’s Santa Claus ad accurately reflects Quinn’s pay hikes and tax position.
No cheap shots. These guys have a lot of luggage.
Still, with Brady’s spots: Nero fiddling? Santa Claus? You might want to check the hourly billing on how much “creative” time is being charged. Those old chestnuts are the first ideas to mind, and should be cast aside as trite.
