Is the ad supposed to be flattering to Quinn? So…while our State is mired in the largest deficit we’ve ever seen with no positive end in sight, he’s around signing dog bills? How about bills for actual people?

I’d say the ad is going to score some points. I’m elbows deep in the budget every year, but that imagery in the latter portions of the add fires me up.
People vote for different reasons, damn sure people will want to vote on this issue.

Brady’s sponsorship was so politically tone deaf as to be unbelievable. Leroy’s right; dog owners who have never voted will vote against Brady for this.

Has anyone else noticed that so far none of Quinns ads has been about the real problems facing this State? The budget? Economy? Corruption? While I am by no mmeans a Brady fan, Bradydoesnt seem to have as many ads as Quinn and the Dem Gov Assoc has up. I would like to see Quinn run ads on those issues instread of just bash Brady on stuff nobody is concerned with.

Brady’s stance on this issue is inhumane…the ad is spot on…the problem is with pet owners, not the pets…Brady will not win this race…there is no way he will garner votes from moderate voters north of I-80, and that in my opinion is what he has to do….

it’s pretty obvious that bill brady, if elected as governor, would spend *much* more of his time on social issues than budgetary issues (save, of course, those that could personally profit himself, his family and his backers), so these kinds of ads are not only relevant, they are instructive and important. illinois needs to know that republicans chose a neanderthal for the top of the ticket. just another reason why i can no longer support republicans…

While there are many important issues in this election, animal welfare issues will drive people to the ballot. Show anyone who has a dog or cat the video of a gas chamber euthanasia and they will certainly for for Quinn.

It’s still ridiculous. I’d love to know what one of these people whose been out of work for more than 6 months and is in danger of losing their house or one of the thousands of teachers who’ve been pinkslipped thinks when they see this. “My life sucks, the governor is on trial and all they can talk about is dogs?”

Budget mess? What budget mess? I’ll raise my staffs’ salary.
Bashing Brady on puppies and social issues isn’t going to overcome the huge mistake Quinn made by giving out those staff raises. That is going to cost him the election. As far as Brady being “hard right” on social issues, so what? What exactly could he do as governor to impose his views on social issues on the rest of us? Very little. It’s the economy, stupid. Not abortion, puppies or evolution.

No, the only thing obvious here is your attempt to make that bogus claim.
We all know what this really was, Brady’s conservative business beliefs getting in the way of image. Bill Brady focuses on helping small businesses, and that includes those businesses that steered him into proposing a bill that would allow them to cut euthanasia costs.
Was this a politically tone deaf move? Yup. Does this expose him as some kind of monster? Only if you want to believe that.

I belong to a rescue group for a particular dog breed. This information has already been spread through the “rabid” dog lovers communities, who will vote single issue when it comes to our pets.

This internet video sets the right tone for this image. Quinn is tweaking Brady because the Governor doesn’t believe Brady is anti-pet. If Quinn really believed that, he would be touring the state on prime time and dumping the stiff euthanized bodies of Lassie and Rin Tin Tin before cameras.
Instead we have these faux cry babies spinning this political move as some kind of ugly revelation regarding Bill Brady’s personality. They are doing this wailing because they are political animals and love playing these kinds of stupid pet tricks for their nominees.
Look at these postings! These people are ridiculous.
Unless you have videotape of Bill Brady strangling the Taco Bell Chijuajua or the discover that each Brady home sold in Bloomington sits upon a pet cemetery, you are barking up the wrong tree!
Bad dogs! BAD!

BS. Brady took a donor’s recommendation and went ahead with it because he either truly doesn’t have compassion for animals or he just blindly does what anyone who donates money to him asks him to do. I’m not sure which is worse. Also, when everyone gripes about Quinn putting issues like this out there instead of budget issues, why don’t you ask Brady for any kind of plan for the budget? He has proposed nothing, unlike Quinn, so who is actually ignoring reality?

it’s pretty easy to stand by my claim (that brady will spend more time working on social issues than budgetary ones) given the fact that he’s done more to enrich himself than he’s helped the people of illinois while in state government. it’s odd to me that anyone would support a candidate who’s likely to become the third governor in a row to end up in a federal jail. illinois needs to move away from the model of using government to help themselves to the public trough. no one can intelligently argue that pat quinn will abuse his power as governor for personal gain…

Bored Now, this is the second or third time in the last two days I’ve read a comment (either here or on the Sun Times or Trib blogs) about how Quinn is likely to end up going to jail. What specifically are you referring to? What crime(s) are you suggesting he may be guilty of? Seems like a reckless claim to make unless you can point to specific actions that smell of illegality, rather than the gov’s occasional tone-deafness (e.g., raising his staff’s salaries).

Steve Downstate: it seems odd that you would misinterpret my comment to suggest that PAT QUINN could follow rod blagojevich to the big house. bill brady is the person who has used his position in the state senate to get business for himself. that fact is so well known that it’s hard to understand how you could have been serious in your question. to quote myself: “no one can intelligently argue that pat quinn will abuse his power as governor for personal gain.” you can’t say the same for bill brady, who’s already abused his power as a state senator to benefit himself. imagine how much taxpayer monies he’d divert to profit himself if he was governor? talk about busting the budget…

The ten most priceless seconds in this ad start at 45s. Absolutely perfect sequence to humanize a candidate. Something like this should be in every political ad of every candidate on the planet.
All in all, a very powerful ad. This will never see the light of day on broadcast TV, and probably not on cable, but as Rich points out, it is intended for the internet-based voter.
Vanilla Man points out that Brady’s vote was tone deaf. He should have added that it was tone deaf beyond belief. Anything that allows a political opponent to use puppies in an ad is idiotic. But on the flip side, I will point out that three states still allow gas for execution of convicted criminals. However, I personally think that mass gassing does sound a bit barbaric.
All in all, an effective ad even though the number of voters swayed will be small. On the other hand, the election may swing on only a few votes…

No one over the age of ten could read my posting calling out your bluffing and spinning, and come up with that load. just exactly what planet do you live on??? - LOL! C’Mon! You’re not in the Junior High Debating club. At least make your come-backs fit the conversation.
Brady deserve a hit for being politically tone deaf and stepping into deep doggie do-do immediately after the Primary. Remember, that was back in February. The reason we didn’t hear anything about it by the Governor is because everyone knew it was what it was, a political misstep. Quinn’s team has come up with this because the Govenror’s polling is still not moving fast enough to settle their stomachs. So, this is why we are seeing this “dog’s dinner” of an Internet spot at the end of summer.
Your attempts to spin this political misstep into something bigger than it is, is nothing less than a delusionary pack of lies. It is just plain bad politics on your part. Yeah - some doggie owners with no other fears than for Fido are going to be moved, but give it a rest, painting Brady into Adolph the Pet Hater in order to then paint him as a Social Himmler makes you look worse than a pet euthanizer.
A candidate can screw up. You don’t make a federal case or give them a psychological examination over something this silly unless you are the one needing your head examined.

If your point is true STL, then Brady has no political ideology regarding business strong enough to guide him. As a businessman himself, I find that hard to believe. If you point is correct, Brady is just a puppet for donors, and I don’t buy that anymore than I would for any other politician.
I see it as a tone deaf ideologue doing a tone deaf bill. Brady is small town. He and his staff bumbled this. Brady has buttons. The one that got pushed here, in my opinion, is the one that goes into automatic when someone tells Brady that a government regulation costs him too much.
And also, let’s remember that the people doing the lobbying here aren’t big operations, because most animal shelters aren’t big business.
But you have made a valid point without going into high school theatrics, because your point doesn’t need any.

I think this spot is as much about perceptions as puppies. Quinn’s biggest gun is that Brady is seriously outside the mainstream, way out of sync with the people of Illinois. This helps soften that ground. Few things say “not like you” better than gassing puppies.

We are $64 billion in debt to our pension fund, conservatively speaking, and Quinn is threatening a massive tax increase in the midst of a recession. By all means, let’s worry about dogs and cats. Soon it will be raining them.

Anyone who thinks this is ‘tone deaf’ or not effective should have been in this room when I played the video.
My wife came over out of curiosity, saw the cute pictures of ‘Bailey’, etc. Then the ad shifted. And the picture of the dogs in the incinerator came up. And she gasped, threw her hand over her mouth, and turned away.
She KNOWS about Brady’s position on this one, and it still hit her in the gut.
We’ll see what they end up doing for TV, but I’ve been saying for quite some time this is the issue that will give Quinn a shot. The message is so clear: “Bill Brady Wants To Kill Puppies”. It doesn’t MATTER if it’s true, it’s too clear and concise, and the reaction is simply visceral.

It would be a fantastic TV ad, it is a good internet ad but I am not sure it will reach its intended target audience.

There is also another new group coming out for the Gov during this election year……..
“PRISONERS FOR PAT” They two want the same as the pets…
1) to be released from the pound
2) to avoid a death chamber
and
3) to be atopted by someone who will feed them, cloth them, and put a roof over their head….
At which time he has already started with the release…
