Quinn to hold 6:30 pm presser

Posted in:

* 6:21 pm - You can watch the live video stream of Gov. Pat Quinn’s press conference by clicking here.

* 6:39 pm - And away we go…

“It is important that we, today, make sure we protect our democracy.” “We’ve cleaned up our government, we’ve reformed our government… That’s why I believe in the power of recall… to remove that person from office before his or her term is up…. Events of the past years, the past decade, underline the need for recall in this state… ”

Says the only thing we should talk about is the one guilty count. “The other 23 counts that are unresolved half to be decided by another jury.”

“We have to work night and day to ensure that government is honest as the people of Illinois.”

Quinn turned to leave, got to his office door, but reporters shouted questions and he turned around. “Allright,” he said, and returned to the podium.

He’s basically repeating the talking points from his statement so far.

“I’m not really interested in focusing on a campaign,” in response to a question about the campaign.

“In the court of public opinion, which was really the decision that was made [during the impeachment and removal and it was determined that] my predecessor disgraced himself.” And then back to recall talk.

“I think the people of Illinois know they have the first honest governor in a long time.”

Asked if the verdict will ruin Governor’s Day at the fair tomorrow: “I don’t think so. I think the people of Illinois are good and true… They know they have a governor who fights for honesty every day of my life.”

End.

  1. Geez, Quinn, recall? You’re not a bomb-thrower anymore, you’re the governor.

  2. Quinn is as goofy as Blago.

  4. {“We’ve cleaned up our government, we’ve reformed our government…}

Who is “we” that he is talking about? Does he have a mouse in his pocket?

Wasn’t it the OIG that flushed out the fact that the “firewall” between government/politics and fundraising in the QUINN adminstration was non existent?

What about that chick who said that “maybe she accessed her personal (QUINN campaign/fundraising) e-mail from the government computer because she was so busy working 24/7 for us citizens that sher nary had time to go home, shower and change?

QUINN’S idea of “cleaning up” a problem is by denying direct knowledge, and blaming someone else.

Her comes Brady’s new campaign slogan:

“Who does he think he’s kidding”

  5. Great snapshot of Quinn’s administration….makes his statement then tries to leave without answering questions…but the door to the Gov’s office was locked so as reporters shouted to come back and answer questions he returns begrudgingly to the microphone. Another pathetic mis-step.

    That was classic!

  8. Was it half or have? Seems like 23/24 is a lot more than half.

  9. I agree with the power of recall too, Pat. In fact, it’s a shame we can’t exercise it right now.

  10. LOL. Bill.

  11. Bill, that’s Brady’s closing TV spot.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 7:10 pm

  12. Pat Quinn sold his integrity to be Lt. Gov. He knew damn well how slimy Blago was but he didnt care. Quinn stood by Blago for two elections Quinn kept his mouth shut smiled and cashed his paychecks while watching Blago raise huge amounts of money by selling seats on state boards and commisions. Quinn was funny to listen to as an angry outsider but is incompetant as Gov.

Comment by fed up Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 7:13 pm

  13. Governor Quinn should be worried. Only 6 in 10 Democrats approved of him prior to today’s verdict. Of those 6 many will feel justice was not served today. Others will feel the former Governor was wrongly stripped of his job. A good day for Governor Bill Brady.

Comment by Lonely Sangamon Dem Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 7:34 pm

  14. I don’t trust Quinn; I don’ believe in Brady or agree with most of what he says. I am so disillusioned. Who to vote for?

Comment by granny Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 7:39 pm

  15. So Quinn feels he’s an honest governor? After getting caught for the second time in his political career giving huge raises to his inner circle while telling everyone else they have to tighten their belts. First time he was Treasurer and the second time now as Governor.
When he was Treasurer he wouldn’t give his regular staff a pay raise until they threatened to go public with the huge raises he had given some of the same people he has now taken care of as Governor.

Comment by Disillusioned Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 7:53 pm

  16. Hmmm….sounds a lot like “working hard for the hard-working people of Illinois”

    Where’d we hear that before?

Comment by Park Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 7:58 pm

  17. The pay raises that hit the papers aren’t even the big ones. why haven’t the other agencies been reported?

Comment by Lonely Sangamon Dem Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 7:59 pm

  18. Exactly how did Pat clean up state government when he’s kept all of Blago’s appointees and actually promoted a few of the more incompetent ones.

Comment by Downstate Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 8:02 pm

  19. Good post Bill. And yes this should be a central theme of the Brady campaign. PQ was a loyal democrat and stood by Blago until he saw his chance to pounce on his job. Voting for him is voting for more of the Dem machine nonsense that has drove this stat of a cliff.

Comment by southern illinoisan Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 8:59 pm

  20. All of this makes voting for Rich Whitney seem more and more like a great idea!

Comment by fedup dem Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 9:06 pm

  21. Like Rod or not, its hard to agree with the way in which the federal governement is going about trying to convict him. They threw the kitchen sink at him, by which he was only found guilty on one count. Heck, Governor Edgar would have been found guilty on one lousy count had he had been indicted for the MSI scandal.

My point here is that the feds tried to convict Rod. They failed on 23 of the 24 counts. Now they will retry him. I’m beginning to become jaded by the justice system. I am starting to realize that if the feds want to get you, they eventually will. If they fail the first time, they will try again. That’s a slippery slope.

Take Rod out of the equation. Even if a jury of your peers does not find you guilty, then you can still be tried again and again and again until the government draws a jury that is favorable to their views. Retrial after retrial until you are convicted. I disagree with this approach.

  22. I can’t wait till the individual jurors start to recap….

  23. Pat Quinn is an undisciplined boob. He cannot lead this state out of its quagmire.

  24. ==If they fail the first time, they will try again. That’s a slippery slope.==

There’s always acquittal which makes your argument moot. A hung jury does not equal exoneration. This happens to be one of the aspects of our justice system that I wholeheartedly agree with. Blago needs to be tried again and again and again until a jury can reach a verdict, be it guilty or not guilty. I’ll accept the results either way - as long as there is a decision.

  25. Oh, Bill. That Quinn quote is pretty mild compared with your heartfelt defenses of RRB. You’re criticizing the guy for agreeing with you?

I’m starting to be sorry that I backed you for the Senate seat.

Comment by soccermom Tuesday, Aug 17, 10 @ 11:15 pm

  26. That woman juror who refused to find Rod guilty of 23 out of 24charges charges “has just hung a dead albatross around Pat Quinn’s neck” just in time fir the Illinois State Fair.

Elvis has just left the building “laughing”.

  27. There isn’t much the Governor could say to extract himself from his past commitments, alliances, support and deals with our convicted impeached former governor Rod Blagojevich.

When it looked like Blagojevich’s trial would be out of the headlines by October, it now looks like it is going to be a major issue for Blagojevich’s Lt. Governor/Governor Quinn.

Now Quinn has two public gubernatorial figures to publically destroy in the next 60 days. Quinn is going to have to gut Blagojevich and disown this flop haired monster from this day out, while scaring voters into believing that his gubernatorial opponent is to the right of Alan Keyes and Ann Coulter. I frankly, don’t see how he can do it with any credibility.

Expect some major poll drops my fellow Democrats, across the board. It’s Blago time!

  28. Sorry mom and thanks for your support.Rod could have saved himself by appointing me but as he well knew I’m not exactly bleepin’ golden and I couldn’t even outbid Roland. Please note that I didn’t criticize Quinn I merely posted his quote.
Quinn does hinself enough harm without me chimimg in. I have to admit I’m really torn right now. I just can’t force myself to vote for the goofball and Brady is out of the question. Believe it or not I tend to agree with fedup dem’s last post.
