Scott Lee Cohen’s new TV ad

Posted in:

* I’m not sure yet when it’s going up or how many points are behind it, but let’s rate it

…Adding… A Chicago friend told me he saw the Cohen ad last night and this morning.

This is his second ad. We’ve already looked at the first one.

  1. Well it’s about 5/10. For some of the uninformed it might attract them, but for the rest of us it means nothing. God I hope he does not take more than 5%

Comment by Publius Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:15 pm

  2. Why do I feel like Scott Cohen is the only one in the race who is playing to win?

Comment by ILPundit Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:16 pm

  3. I actually like the ad. GT was very creative….

    Comment by Rahm's Parking Meter Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:17 pm

  4. “Mommy what’s an order of protection?”

Comment by Dirt Digger Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:18 pm

  5. This guy is so nasty, there isn’t enough happy b/w people in this world to elect him. Even the dog is smarter.

Comment by VanillaMan Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:19 pm

  6. That was HILARIOUS, Dirt Digger.

Comment by LincolnLounger Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:20 pm

  7. And A …so long as you know nothing else about SLC.

    Comment by D.P. Gumby Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:20 pm

  8. 7/10 It made me smile. That reaction will make it stand out among the clutter of negative adds with the same spinning graphics and heavy handed music. If the point is to stand out this add hits the mark.

I was thrown by the birds and bees. I thought that was a term used to refer to teaching children about sexuality. Odd to see the book open up and see Quinn and Brady. Was that a mindless gaff or an intentional innuendo?

Comment by We Todd Did Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:20 pm

  9. Creepy. Way too Creepy.

    Comment by 10th Indy Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:21 pm

  10. This one come off like a Saturday Night Live skit? :-)

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:23 pm

  11. Gassing little puppies! I never thought I would see it in an ad! Ha!

Comment by Swing Vote Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:25 pm

  12. Well, if making me laugh is any criteria for good it worked on me. Gassing little puppies. Too funny

    Comment by Phineas J. Whoopee Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:25 pm

  13. Gee, you can produce “avant garde” (10 years ago) black-and-white-with-spot-color kitsch political spots if you’re just stealing from a loon.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:26 pm

  14. Ah yes the actual ad.

It’s a Bill Hillsman-style press release ad. The theory is that it will be eye-catching and get more bang for the (limited) buy.

In reality the only people who can process its message are voters who already follow the race very closely and as such have already made up their minds.

Comment by Dirt Digger Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:27 pm

  15. Will some reporter PLEASE start fact checking the SLC job fairs? Pretty please?

7/10. The gassing puppies line made me laugh, but not as hard as Dirt Digger. Well played sir.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:27 pm

  16. I thought it was great. You have to love the guts of a guy with his baggage doing an ad like this. Hilarious.

Comment by shore Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:29 pm

  17. Dang! I didn’t want to like it, but I did. A happy attack ad with a safe, retro feel. Not all that easy to do.

    7/10

Are any of the other candidates ever going to mention SLC’s presence in the campaign, do you think? Or do they guess it’s safe to completely ignore him.

Comment by Responsa Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:32 pm

  18. Good ad.

    Comment by Tom B. Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:33 pm

  19. I rate it an A-. Very funny and so out of the norm, I think it will garner a lot of attention. This guy may make some noise by November, if the media and the Quinn and Brady campaigns ignore him.

Comment by downstate hack Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:36 pm

  20. Don Draper thought it was hollow, self-serving, and gave no information about SLC for someone to make a rational judgement on his candidacy….

    So Don liked it.

Roger Sterling was down the street as 21 smoking Luckys and having a Bourbon so no critique ….

I give it a 6 out of 10. It was clever, on one single topic, and with the black and white vs. color book, it will have some memory behind it.

Now, how many points are in this buy?

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:45 pm

  21. Will Illinois reprise Minnesota’s election of Jesse Venture this year with SLC? The ad was good - probably the most entertaining since the primaries - it merits an A.

Comment by phocion Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:55 pm

  22. I like it, “Mommy, what is a career politician…” I give it an “A.” Brady and Quinn are career politicians. One, Brady, believes he is not, while the other, Quinn, doesn’t recognize that he in fact is - a politician.
Remember, Cohen wins the Lt. Gov bid with ads like this, albeit over radio, 670 the Score specifically.

Comment by GetOverIt Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:57 pm

  23. 3/10 Eye roller at best…

    Comment by A.B. Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:58 pm

  24. That’s an A.

    Comment by Cheryl44 Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 3:58 pm

  25. Ok, dirt digger deserves a “drinks with Rich Miller” night for that one. I am still laughing.

Comment by Raising Kane Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:00 pm

  26. For entertainment value, I give it a 10…. the dog was the best part. For political value I give it a 2…..not very good when you’re trying to lead a stste that has 12.5 million people.

Comment by downhereforyears Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:01 pm

  27. Have to admit it’s an A.

Comment by OneMan Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:05 pm

  28. It’s a really good ad because its memorable. Also makes me laugh because I remember telling a Republican Senate staffer that they were foolish to try to undo my humane euthanasia bill, only to have them chuckle and say ‘yeah, as if anybody’s going to get worked up about stray dogs and cats’. Oops.

And Dirt Digger, since Miller is likely way too cheap to buy you drinks, I’ll buy you a cocktail just for making me laugh out loud. Once I finish wiping the Diet Coke off of my keyboard.

Comment by Rep. John Fritchey Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:14 pm

  29. Fritchey, I’m taking out a reader tonight.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:15 pm

  30. Probably on my tab somehow :)

Comment by Rep. John Fritchey Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:27 pm

  31. In case you can’t tell, I’m still bitter about my wholly unwarranted deletion last week. I think you owe me a consolation drink.

Comment by Rep. John Fritchey Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:29 pm

  32. Yeah. Just what you need.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:31 pm

  33. John - if I turned a shade darker every time I think RIch deletes me unfairly I’d look like you after one of your “vacations”.

That ad isn’t creepy, but SLC is.
47 - fact check would probably not have a problem with this ad - it only says “people” back to work which could mean 2. And we know he paid 3 people to appear in his radio ad - so it may be factually correct.

Comment by Siriusly Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:47 pm

  34. Guess he left out the part that 6 months ago he wanted to run with “career politician Pat Quinn”
ad is a 3/10 nothing but I’m not these guys ad.

Comment by OurMagician Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:47 pm

  35. And no John that wasn’t a personal slam. I know for a fact that you find my tanning jokes funny because I saw you reading them and laughing on C-SPAN during the Blago hearings.

Comment by Siriusly Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:48 pm

  36. I’ll go with a 7.5/10. In this environment it strikes the right tone.

And yes Dirt Digger’s line was hilarious, but it only matters if Quinn can afford to fight back.

Comment by Don't Worry, Be Happy Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 4:57 pm

  37. Y’all are gonna miss me…

Comment by Rep. John Fritchey Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 5:10 pm

  38. Where are you going? The county board ain’t the North Pole.

You won’t be able to leave. We’ll drag you back in.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 5:11 pm

  39. Production Quality - B. Okay graphics and nice use of B & W and color.

Content: A. I agree that it’s extremely funny and will be memorable. Sorta like those guys who ran for Governor a few years back with the trans-am. Those were also funny. He’ll only get 3% of the vote but at least he’ll have fun losing.

Dirt Digger’s line A++++. The absolute best!

    Comment by CM46 Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 5:18 pm

  40. …‘yeah, as if anybody’s going to get worked up about stray dogs and cats’.

Stray dogs and cats are one of the few things that actually gets people worked up. People care more about pets and animals than they do about most other people in case you haven’t noticed.

Springfield knuckleheads, it’s a wonder our state isn’t in worse shape. Quinn would’ve been wise to hit Brady on that already.

The ad, it is a loser to me. I get the career politician label, but is this supposed to tell me that SLC is going to bring us back to the halcyon days of yesteryear? The poodle skirt era stylization just distracts me and the Quinn/Brady mother goose book device is kind of creepy, on top of the general SLC creepiness. 3/10 … If I rated it on money going to Granger Terry 10/10. Rated on credibility of Granger Terry -1,000,000/10.

    Comment by Pioneer P. Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 5:32 pm

  41. On the first viewing it was kind of funny but a little strange, after a few repeat viewing it seems kind of creep in a way.

Comment by RMW Stanford Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 6:19 pm

  42. BTW-Quinn’s up with a new ad tonight pounding Brady on the federal income taxes.

Comment by Mark Buerhle Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 7:35 pm

  43. Classic. I laughed out loud when I saw it on the news this evening. He just might peel off some voters from both Brady and Quinn with stuff like this.

Comment by Bluefish Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 7:36 pm

  44. Ya, Cohen is not a career politician. No Scott Lee Cohen is a drug abusing, woman beater who doesn’t pay his child support. If voters in Illinois fall for this loser they deserve what they get. Come to think of it maybe Cohen would be perfect for them!

Comment by Demo Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 9:22 pm

  45. I think Demo’s got a point. Illinois has Battered Woman’s Syndrome. Where’s that good male friend who’s always secretely had a crush on you when you need him? We could really use some poor sap to stand in as a human sheild…. and after he gets the crap beat out of him, we’ll just go back to the woman beater… because afterall, he wouldn’t hit us if he didn’t care.

Comment by bored Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 10:52 pm

  46. All this makes me feel a LOT better about wanting to cast my vote for Green Party candidate Rich Whitney!

Comment by fedup dem Tuesday, Sep 21, 10 @ 10:58 pm

  47. Bored,

that was the most bizarre posts I’ve read here in a long time.
