* It appears that things didn’t go so well for Bill Brady at a Chicago press conference with New Jersey’s Gov. Christie…
Brady cut short his news conference amid questions about his plans for Illinois’ $13 billion deficit.
Chicago reporters asking about the deficit? Will wonders never cease? They even got in a good one about Christie…
[Brady] also had nothing to say about Christie skipping a $3 billion pension payment. Illinois has skipped payments, too, and Brady called it irresponsible.
It’s amazing what a few polls showing a tight race can do.
*** UPDATE *** It wasn’t pretty, apparently. Tribune…
Republican governor candidate Bill Brady has been blasting Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn for taxing, spending and borrowing, but today Brady refused to rule out borrowing a record $50 billion to shore up state finances.
“All options have to be considered,” Brady said.
Brady’s willingness to consider massive borrowing for the state employee pension systems came in response to questions at a downtown news conference where the candidate sought in vain to focus on his endorsementy by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a darling of Republicans and conservatives.
This is what Brady said during the primary campaign about his $50 billion pension bond idea…
He’d fill much of the existing $80-billion hole in the state’s pension plans by borrowing. The borrowing would be repaid by allotting much of the natural growth in state revenues to pension debt service, he says.
Um, there is no revenue growth, natural or otherwise.
* Jim Edgar explains his endorsement of Bill Brady…
“We’ve had…18 months of Gov. Quinn and I just don’t think managing is necessarily his suit. I think he means well, but I just don’t think that’s what he’s cut out to do,” Edgar said Wednesday, following a lecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “Whereas Bill Brady we don’t know for sure, he hasn’t been governor. He has some business experience. I’m willing to take a chance there, too.”
He’s right about Quinn. But, as our prolific and indispensable commenter “Wordslinger” noted earlier today…
Bill Brady is a relatively common name, which may explain the contradictory Bill Brady budget and economic comments out there.
–Bill Brady I was in the GA 17 years and voted on budgets, presumably with some idea of what’s in them.
–Bill Brady II has no idea what’s in the state budget, how it is being spent, who is owed money and how much, and will need a “forensic audit” to sort it all out.
– Bill Brady III is confident enough in the information he has to state that he can cut taxes and close the deficit in one year.
– Bill Brady IV is against more borrowing.
– Bill Brady V wants to float a $50 billion pension obligation bond.
– Bill Brady VI is a businessman who knows how to “grow” jobs in a lousy economy.
– Bill Brady VII is a businessman who shed jobs in a lousy economy.
I’m sure there will be more and different Bill Brady sightings in the coming weeks.
Me too.

But we will be seeing the same old, tired, in-the-pockets-of-the-unions-and-special-interests Pat Quinn, too.

I kept hoping Quinn would grow into the job, but after 30 years in Government, he’s already reached his potential. I still don’t believe the recent polls showing this a close race will pan out on Election Day, but if Quinn wins, down ballot Democrats will suffer continuing embarrassments for another 4 years. Stop the pain!!!

“I’m willing to take a chance” Edgar
“The voters blew it” Edgar
Tell me Senor Edgar, how the voters have much choice. In your scenario, we either get lucky or we don’t. Sounds like a game instead of an election. If things continue to go south you can once again blame it on the voters. How much are we paying you to lecture students?

More Bill Brady sightings, yes. But will Jason Plummer ever be seen in public again before the election?
Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 3:19 pm
I am going to throw a tip …. IF you decide to have a press conference, expect questions. IF you have someone coming to endorse you at this said news conference and you have differences with the policies of that endorser, expect QUESTIONS …
Last tip … when it gets hot in the kitchen … stay. The press will love the “When it gets hot, Brady gets out … and is afraid of the questions…
Next thing you know, Jerry and Co. are going to have Jason Plummer talk about how rough it is on families and making it out on your own …
Brady’s Press Flack … nice work today!

Anonymous, he’s assigned to campaigning in border towns. Most likely Mexican or Canadian border towns.
Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 3:22 pm
Jason Plummer, “Rich, it’s important to connect with the borders, … like when I was in school … I was told ‘Jason, color in the borders, secure them with red, or blue, or even green’ so you mock me Rich, but campaigning around the borders is real important and stuff.”
(this is obviously snark, and if he was visible it would be worse for Brady, so ya can’t fault Jerry, but it stinks for the voters)
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 3:27 pm
Maybe Brady should stick to this kind of setting for a press conference.

Hey Former Governor Edgar,
How about just saying I support Bill Brady because he will be a better governor than Pat Quinn and leave it at that. After all, you were just a former state rep. and legislative director when Jim Thompson made you who you are today.
How would you have like it if Thompson would have said “Hey, Dixon was good to work with, but now I get to appoint, and this Edgar guy, hey who knows, maybe he won’t screw it up too bad!”

They better keep Plummer far from civilization for the next four weeks. If his tax returns go public now, there won’t be any time to repair the damage.
Sheila, you have only one talking point from this point on: the voters of Illinois need to know how Jason Plummer makes his living. Transparency is a small price to pay for the privilege of serving in public office.
Don’t say anything else. And please put your banjo away unless you can play a little tune about Plummer’s tax returns.

RE: Brady’s bond proposal.
Fat chance. From Bloomberg news today:
Strains at Home
Illinois turned overseas amid financial strains at home. With California, it has the lowest credit rating of any state from Moody’s, which put $25 billion of general-obligation bonds on negative outlook on Sept. 23. That indicates Moody’s may again cut the state’s A1 rating, the fifth-highest grade, after a one-level reduction June 4.
The state’s budget deficit almost tripled in 2009 to $7.7 billion, Moody’s said. Its pension fund had assets to cover just 50.6 percent of promised benefits last year, the lowest so- called funded ratio of any state in data compiled by Bloomberg.
Going abroad saved Illinois about $30 million because of appetite for its debt there, said Sinsheimer, the capital- markets director, based on where final yields were set compared with initial expectations. The state paid a top yield of 7.35 percent on the 25-year debt in the July sale, more than the 20- year yield of Peru, which didn’t exceed 7.1 percent in the month.
“There was a feeling that the Build America Bond product was particularly of interest overseas,” said Sinsheimer. He wouldn’t identify any buyers.

For the love of god…give the poor guy a chance. Obviously he’s not a chicago chrony, and wants to try reducing spending, a novel thought I know, prior to having to come in and raise taxes. Whats wrong with that concept, a man is getting beat down by people saying that will never work… I mean really what has the state come to? We would rather vote for a guy who just wants to raise taxes because he’s got a “D” behind his name…Wake up people….. Thats pathetic.
Comment by dumb ol' country boy Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 4:23 pm
These are the type of press “flops” that Jerry and Co. need to avoid, because with SLC around, and Quinn not getting more competent in 28 days, AND voters are not engaged in this race, SLC, in my thumbnail assesment for a post, IS hurting Brady more than Quinn.
If SLC was ever discredited as the buffon he was and is, SLC’s millions would not be hurting anyone in this general election race.
Side bar…
Question: Are there going to be any LG debates?
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 4:26 pm
dumb ol’ country boy,
When your fiscal plan is to cut spending, its like when you have $100 in cash, $120 in bills and spend all that $100 on heat, electricity, gas, food …
and…
Then you reduce that to $90, have no heat, but have electricity and are eating crackers, while still having $120 in debt which is now $132 because of the missed payment & interest …
So …
Is cutting that 10%, having limited services and not servicing the debt HELPING in that senerio??
Brady needs help, and this press “flop” that became about budgets ain’t helping.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 4:33 pm

Comment by Wensicia Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 4:35 pm
Oswego Willy,
A horrible analogy. You imply that ABSOLUTELY EVERY SPENDING ITEM is critical and must be continued at its current level. That is utter balderdash on its face. I contend we could start with anything that is called “High Speed.”
Comment by Cincinnatus Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 4:39 pm
Cincinnatus,
1) When an analogy for a budget estimated in the billions (with that B) is being paraleled with $100 of monopoly money, its broad stroke, not specific.
2) Everyone and their brother, along with their cousins, nephews, etc … say that the 10% is NOT enought, not sufficient at looking at all agencies, etc., so making it a ridiculous budget, of $100 no less, is also focusing on that the Brady plan is ridiculous …
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 4:49 pm
Can’t say Brady wasn’t advised by the Capitol Fax Chorus to stay quiet and vague till election day. Oops. Can’t be specific when you plan is a blank sheet of paper.

Rich, when that’s all she’s got, I would hope Plummer uses it. I’m sure Ms. Simon is nice and all of the other lovely pleasantries, but she was a one-term Carbondale councilwoman who got trounced in a mayoral election in her own hometown with the strong endorsements of and appearances with two sitting U.S. Senators. And yeah, I know she put the hard, $50 contribution cap on herself but she still had the mo and the names behind her and she got smoked. Being Paul Simon’s daughter doesn’t mean squat when you’re vying for an office that has become all too relevant in the wake of the Blago debacle.

I love how everyone is interested in knowing if Brady recognizes reality. Of course he doesn’t! Neither does Quinn.
Who do I want in Office? A failed governor who had clearly demonstrated and total inability to govern, who is promising to raise my taxes, or the other guy who is promising not to, but those promises aren’t accepted as reality by the same folks who threw us into this humongous mess to begin with?
Yeah, Brady doesn’t know what he is talking about. But the guy in Office now is even worse.
Comment by VanillaMan Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 8:16 pm
Fred,
You better hope Brady can “Run out the clock” these 28 days, the rate this campaign is going. I have a bad feeling this crew is more apt to say too much now, instead of getting too visable where the press will have their way.
Fred, your post scares me more than motivates me. It’s gonna get tougher, and is Jerry & Co. ready? That is the question.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 8:29 pm
For the second night in a row, I thank VanillaMan for bringing reason into the debate.
I do not think Brady is perfect, but I do think he is the better alternative of the two candidates with the best chance to win.

Gee O’ Willy, I hope the campaign trail doesn’t start early for you and Quinn, your gonna be so tired.
I believe any person would realize you would cut your spending first. So in your perfect world, you would want that 100 bucks covering all your expenses and then wanting a little to put away for a rainy day. However we could do what Quinn wants and just go out and take from everyone else how is making 125 and apply to your bills so you can continue your quality of life. Or better yet go borrow it and finance it for so long your grandchildren can worry about paying for it.
I know, people living within their means, it’s a new concept.

Hey everyone, Jason is a very important V.P. for Something or Other in his dad’s company, and you KNOW that must mean he’s very sharp and hard-working, because how else would you become V.P. for Something or Other at age 27 in your dad’s company if you weren’t–you know–sharp? Plus he started businesses right out of college (self starter that he is) and that’s a lot to–you know–keep track of…which probably explains why he wasn’t sure whether he still owned the companies or not during the primary campaign. (Dad sold them, darn it!) So everybody stop picking on Jason because he’s a Businessman who knows how to make jobs for people…people who, like himself, happen to be sort of qualified to be V.P.s at age twenty-seven.

Dumb,
Go online or grab a budget book the GRF has been reduced under PQ. We are bleeding revenue from the economic collapse…just like BB’s favorite state of Texas. Until BB outlines a budget with his proposals included what he has to say has as much credibility as Mark Kirks inside info on Iraq’s WMD.
Comment by Hurricane Bob Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 9:59 pm
It’s funny to read what you all make up as Brady’s plans for job’s or the budget then attack it as crazy when it’s really just your silly character of Brady that you have made up that you are attacking.
Then you ignore how much Quinn has screwed up the state and have no response to what he is going to do about the budget or the debt. While you complain about Brady’s 10 percent cut Quinn still owes schools and local governments far more than that from the 2010 budget and has cut almost that from the 2011 budget. Quinn hasn’t started sending money for the 2011 budget so while Quinn talks about Brady’s 10 percent cut I would think most of these folks would love just a 10 percent cut. Then Quinn says Brady will cause local governments to cut their budget maybe because Quinn knows that’s what’s been happening since he got into office because he has done. Like sending $500 million to Chicago for free bus rides for seniors or $60 million for a tax holiday for school supplies nice ideas but not when you’re broke.
Comment by really Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 10:08 pm
Well see guys. Someone mentions volunteer numbers are low for the Repubs and I mention a great turnout for the rally tonight. People I talk with want a sign, are talking to people about Brady, are willing to help out.
Most people in this state realize just how bad Quinn/Blago were and are.
People in Springfield are conservative? Gee, how about people in the suburbs, people in Peoria, people in Bloomington, people in the farm communities. Very few people want a 13 billion deficit to grow to 15 and 20 billion under a completely inept Quinn! Not to mention near double digit unemployment. You Dems keep up the arrogance though cause clearly it makes you feel good.
Comment by Fred Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 10:26 pm
i don’t have a horse in this race, as I noted a few posts ealier i think our choices are dumb and dumber. I am a Dem but feel that brady is going to win, if he can’t beat Quinn with the type of mood the entire nation is in (not to mention the job he is doing) then the repubs should just close up shop in illinois for good.
and for the record most of those places you mention except peoria…yes they are mainly republican. Basically Chicago carries my party…
Comment by jimmy james Tuesday, Oct 5, 10 @ 10:34 pm
Really -
I don’t ignore Quinn’s faults and share your opposition to the bus rides for seniors and the tax holiday for school supplies, but I just happen to think Brady would be worse. I don’t think $50 billion in more borrowing before some kind of tax increase is a good idea.
And it’s disturbing that the few moments he does talk about the budget how out of touch and clueless he seems when he spouts off things like this to the Sun-Times:
“On budget issues, Brady avoided stating specifically what programs he would cut to achieve his stated goal of a 10-percent reduction in state spending but said “Medicaid savings can be greater than 10 percent.” ”
What Medicaid savings is he going to discover at all (let alone greater than 10 percent!!!) when cutting state spending on Medicaid will also trigger less federal funds coming to Illinois?
Illinois can’t change it’s eligibility requirements or reduce its Medicaid coverage or else it loses its increased federal match that was extended for the first six months of 2011. Meanwhile, at the same time, the state is going to be implementing healthcare reform and getting ready to massively expand eligibility and make technology upgrades and change the way Medicaid works the next four years and Brady thinks there’s savings there?
Good luck with that.
