* Alexi Giannoulias’ new ad is probably his toughest yet, and it goes after Mark Kirk’s “I’ll spend less, borrow less and tax less” tagline. Rate it…
* The DSSC hits Kirk for being a DC type…
* Lisa Madigan is about to put this TV ad on the air. Rate it…
A Chicago-area campaign manager says…
Great, so they’re going to win by 40 and take up spots all the rest of us need because inventory is scarce.
Maybe so, but in a year like this she doesn’t want to take any chances whatsoever.

Lisa doesn’t want to take a chance and she also wants to start building a foundation for future elections. For those reasons there is no downside to running an ad to reiterate her accomplishments. Nice ad, kids are always an important topic no matter who you are, no mention of her opponent. Just a friendly ” Here I am , this is what I have done, remember me.”

Good for Lisa, its not her fault that we republicans can’t put up anyone who, on paper, can compete with her. Lisa is doing her “due dilligence” and not taking ANY voters for granted.
The campaing hack who complained, mt advice, “Work harder, work better, work smarter … if Lisa Madigan running ads is the only factor in you possibly losing, then you need to look at other aspects of your campaign that occured way before Lisa put up an ad …”
I am so proud of my party, making Lisa and Jesse work so hard … (snark)

Lisa’s ad is an exercise of vanity. Not take any chances? Gimme a break - I honestly can’t even name her opponent. She would have won by at least 20 without lifting a finger. Now it seems she’s just trying to accumulate more votes than Jesse White so she can say she’s the most popular pol in the state.
Even if she hates the top of the ticket, how about lending a hand to her fellow female candidates. Instead of wasting money and using up badly needed air-time splashing your own mug all over the tv, why not do an ad with Sheila and Robin? Drive up women turnout, which is something the entire ticket could benefit from.

about the DSSC ad, I saw it this morning on WGN Morning News. It seems like the exact same ad that’s been out and it wants to be a little more light humored. Seems to copy the style of the Crossroads ad of Alexi driving around town in a SUV.

Kirk gets his nose bloodied on that one.

“toughest yet”…Alexi needs to get tougher. Also, He and Quinn need to tie Kirk and Brady with the tea-party.
Comment by VoterUSA Friday, Oct 8, 10 @ 10:47 am
The Alexi ad is a gut puncher, backed by facts and press statements. I give it a 9.
If you can choke down the hypocrisy of the DSCC regarding the Wall Street bailout, pay raises and DC, their ad has a memorable style.
As far as Lisa goes, politics is a zero-sum game. You don’t get style points for not running up the score.

If this character is a Democrat, and I presume he is, his principal worry should be the demoralized Democrats who are going to stay home in November. Ms. Madigan’s ad gives those Democratic voters a reason to show up on Election Day.
And every Democratic candidate on the ballot will benefit from that.

Demoralized Democrats? All you gotta do is tie Kirk and Brady to the Tea Party and you’ll get Dems to the polls…demoralized or not.

“…in a year like this she doesn’t want to take any chances whatsoever.”
Certainly. But also a down payment ad?

So the Senate Democrats are attacking “Washington, D.C.?”
LOL!
Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Friday, Oct 8, 10 @ 11:07 am
The image in Lisa’s ad of the voting booth at the playground is a 10! Few ads visually connect voting with real life and that does it. It removes the abstraction. Excellent and beautiful…voting for protection of your kids.
Comment by D.P. Gumby Friday, Oct 8, 10 @ 11:09 am
Ok, MrJm, really?? That ad is going to motivate Democrats to come to the polls?? You have got to be kidding me. I have not attended even one focus group this year where a peep was uttered about “playground safety”. Its a feel good ad for Lisa….good for her but if you think Democrats are hopping out of bed election day and saying “I need to run out and vote for Lisa or my kid will have more that a scraped knee” you are just kidding yourself.
Voters go to the polls out of hope or fear and this ad doesnt do either.

Kirk Ad #1 - 8/10 - great message
Kirk ad #2 - 10/10 - one of the best I’ve seen this year. Using his own words to frame the message - humorous but dead on with message as well. Great ad, I love that one.
Lisa’s ad 8/10 - creative and unique - good message - but normally I prefer to see the candidate’s name or face more - but I guess her name ID is so high she doesn’t need to.
Comment by Siriusly Friday, Oct 8, 10 @ 11:17 am
no mention of the word democrat in the lisa madigan ad.

As is so often the case, Raising Kane is right.
Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Oct 8, 10 @ 11:20 am
So the DSCC is bashing Kirk for being in D.C. while Alexi is campaigning to represent us in D.C.?! HA! Only D.C.-level politics can bring us those types of yucks from both sides.
Alexi’s ad on Kirk is a good one. This is a slug-fest rivaled only by McCann-Demuzio.
Comment by Team Sleep Friday, Oct 8, 10 @ 11:24 am
Shore, unless I’ve missed it, there’s been no mention of the words “Democrat” or “Republican” in any Illinois ad this general election season.
Comment by wordslinger Friday, Oct 8, 10 @ 11:26 am
Agree that the voting booth prop in the Lisa ad is fabulous.
It takes our deepest fear — of a creepy guy in the park watching our kids — and literally replaces it with the something every voter can do to keep kids safe. Subtle and powerful, especially for women voters.
So it is good GOTV while being light on the me, me, me stuff that candidates do. Which does Sheila and Robin and the whole party a big favor.
Comment by Way South of the Border Friday, Oct 8, 10 @ 11:39 am
@R.Kane - My point wasn’t that it was going to make Democrats stampede to the polls, it was that it might remind Democrats that there is a well-known, statewide Democratic candidate for whom they could vote without holding their noses.
But if Rich says your right, you probably are.

I like Lisa’s ad. It’s hard to talk about violent sex offenders in a positive way, but she does it without scary images that would turn off voters. A little weird that her name and visual is only in the very end. Maybe that is the strategy.

Lisa’s Ad is great, and any good publicity for her is good for the rest of the democratic candidates. Voters will start voting democratic and just keep voting that way.

Kirk is getting beat up in the ad war this week but he’s going to crush young Alexi on meet the press this weekend.

Lisa ad barely mentions Lisa. Not a good plan in a crowded and expensive tv market.

If voters so much hate her daddy and don’t think carrer politcans should be reelected, why are they voting in droves for the Speaker’s daughter??? Two plus two doesn’t equal four?

@RK - I think I figured out where we have a disconnect.
My comment was in response to the complaint about Lisa running a TV ad. I wasn’t talking about the value of that particular TV ad, but, rather, the merit of Lisa running any TV ads at all when “inventory is scarce.”
Your comment was about the quality/value of that ad. But the complaint of the “Chicago-area campaign manager” would apply to any L. Madigan ad, even if it hit the sweet spots of hope and fear.
I think the idea that L. Madigan shouldn’t run any TV ads is merit-less.
You think this particular L. Madigan TV ad is merit-less.
I think…

Nice job by Lisa. A positive, simple message with a wonderful device–the voting booth in the real world. It should stand out among all the negativity out there.
