*** UPDATED x1 *** New TV ads by Giannoulias, Rove

Posted in:

* Alexi Giannoulias’ latest TV ad uses “person in the street” interviews to make the case against Mark Kirk. Rate it

* Script…

Announcer: Mark Kirk: Lied about going to war. Opposed middle class tax cuts. And said “unemployment’s not that big an issue.” What do you say?

Woman 1: Unemployment is a big issue.

Woman 2: I don’t think he has a clue about unemployment.

Woman 3: Congressman Kirk is obviously out of touch.

Man 1: How can you vote against tax cuts for middle class families?

Woman 4: He’s been in Washington too long.

Woman 5: His whole political career is probably a lie.

Man 2: Mark Kirk’ lies are probably going to catch up with him.

Woman 6: He’s not a leader, he’s a liar.

Woman 7: I would not trust him with my left shoe.

* Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS has a tough new ad hitting Giannoulias

  1. I would not trust him with my left shoe.

    Awesome.

  2. “Lied about going to war”! What a bunch of left-wing tripe. I hate the ads of both these Senate candidates, however. For whom do I vote?

Comment by Xgman Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:50 pm

  3. I love how Alexi’s campaign is suggesting that Kirk has been in office too long when in fact Alexi’s Senator mentor Dick Durbin has been in DC longer than Kirk. Too long if it’s a Republican, not long enough if it’s a Democrat. Got it.

Comment by Davey Boy Smithe Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:53 pm

  4. Xgman, the good news is you get to vote for a person, not an ad.

    Comment by A-Rog Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:59 pm

  5. OK, Xgman, Kirk only lied about being under fire while serving during a war (as opposed to serving, you know, in a war), among other things he’s misremembered wrong.

The Rove ad is a glancing blow, the Giannoulias ad is a punch in the nose. And FWIW, I hate the ads of both these Senate candidates too. Of course, that’s probably because I don’t much care for either of the candidates. So I’d ask instead, against whom shall I vote?

    That’s easy for me: Kirk.

  6. –Mark Kirk: Lied about going to war.–

Game over, as far as I’m concerned. I’m writing in Jackson, the only candidate in the country that I’m aware of that cut a spot in the primary against our cynical, 10-year-old FUBAR in Afghanistan.

We went to get Osama. Our folks on the ground did the best job possible, and I admire the hell out of that. But we missed.

Now it’s $6.5 billion a month to prop up the world’s biggest heroin kingpins. And it ain’t about national security, it’s domestic politics. No one has the guts to get out.

Read Bechloss’ edit of the LBJ tapes with Sen. Russell, the superhawk from Georgia on Vietnam. Same damn thing.

But who cares, it’s somebody elses kids and borrowed money. What a silly, selfish era we live in.

  7. Kirk’s official House website said he was the only member of Congress to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom. But he didn’t.

I served during Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield, but I never, never, not-one-freaking-time ever said or even implied that I served in that war. To do so would have been despicable.

Some may think it’s “tripe.” But it is a real issue of character for some of us.

  8. She wouldn’t trust him with her left shoe. How about Rutherford’s wallet?

Comment by Betsy Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 4:16 pm

  9. I sort of like the man on the street ad. At some point the flashy deep voice narrator attack ads blend together and voters are tuning out already. Alexi’s new ad is a little different and it resonates a little bit. I give it a 7/10.

  10. Check out David Brooks’ op ed piece in today’s NYT, “Would You Run.” commenting on the “liar-liar” Illinois Senate campaign.

  11. ==Check out David Brooks’ op ed piece==

The question is: Will Kirk itemize this op-ed as a campaign expense or will Brooks claim it as a campaign donation? Or both?

    Comment by Jack S. Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 4:59 pm

  12. Even if this add had not been attributed, it’s easily identifiable; it reeks of Rove.

Comment by Sb Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 5:09 pm

  13. The other two claims RE: Kirk are pretty bogus too:

    –opposed middle class tax cuts–

The tiny citation indicates vote 70 on 2/13/09. The Stimulus bill. So they’re framing the $700 Billion spending bill as a “middle class tax cut”?

–unemployment is “not a big issue”–

The citation indicates he said it in April of 2008…when unemployment was just over 5% and a full 4 months BEFORE the Lehman Brothers/financial scare happened in September.

Pretty tough ad, but pretty bogus charges too.

Comment by John Galt Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 6:56 pm

  14. Kirk’s misrememberings (lies) are less severe than Mr. I ran the bank when I was running for treasurer vs I left the bank when money was loaned to killers and mobsters vs I was still working at the bank to reap the huge tax benefits.

Comment by Wumpus Saturday, Oct 16, 10 @ 12:18 am

  15. I agree with MrJM on Fri @ 4:11. I enlisted in the military in 1968 and served “during” some of the worst days of the Vietnam war. For some reason, only known the the Man above, I was not sent to Vietnam. In all those years since, I still remember, very well, all my time in the service and I’ve never said I served “in” Vietnam. I wouldn’t vote for Mark Kirk in a one-horse race and I know my fellow veterans that I’ve talked to will not either.
