New TV ads: Kilbride; Brady; Rove; MoveOn

Posted in:

* Oops

Rock Island County States Attorney Jeff Terronez has been pulled from at least one campaign ad, while Illinois State Police look into allegations that involve buying alcohol and partying with underage girls.

A source close to the case says the allegations center around a 19-year old junior college student, and a 17-year old high school student, both under the legal drinking age of 21.

Mr. Terronez Thursday said he couldn’t comment on any investigation or allegations.

Earlier this month, a spokesperson for Chief Justice Tom Kilbride confirmed Mr. Terronez’s taped endorsement was edited out of his campaign commercial on October 1st.

Kilbride’s lastest ad

* I’m not sure how many points are behind this ad, but Bill Brady just released a new and positive spot called “Im the guy.” Rate it

* The new TV ad from Karl Rove’s CrossroadsGPS is about the mob banker stuff

* MoveOn is running an ad for Alexi Giannoulias that brings up “the corporate front groups” trying to “buy” the election

* And here’s something you should definitely watch unless you’re a media pro. UIS Assistant Professor of Business Administration Jorge Villegas talks about emotions in advertising. Have a look

  1. Isn’t Kilbride the guy who sided with all those criminals who got out early and hurt people?

Intersting to finally see MoveOn in this election cycle.

  2. Nice job of bringing in the “I didn’t know the extent of their involvement” statement into the attack piece on Giannoulias. I don’t know if it will hit big, especially in light of AG’s latest gaffe, but the piece is very smooth and looks different than most of the others, so it should stand out.

  3. Let’s Face it “I’m The Guy” shows how little we will be getting in the unlikely event NoTaxBill slips in.
Look at those eyes and you see the Blagoof work ethic over and over again.
Hard to think GOPs,TeaParteeeeeers or anyone else rushing out to vote.

  4. I liked the Brady ad. Refreshing and unusual because it is actually pleasant.

  5. I’m surprised Alexi isn’t making a bigger deal out of Karl Rove meddling in our Illinois election. Rove is well known and he’s not well liked. But the arrogance of him trying to tell us what we should do in a state where he’s never lived, should turn off everyone, including Republicans.

  6. Nice “feel good” ad by Brady. Answers “Who is this guy?”
Not sure how he will cut our deficit completely without raising taxes and he keeps insisting on this.
On a scale of 1-10 I give it a 9. It is positive with what appears to be substance.

Comment by Richard Afflis Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 9:39 am

  7. “I was raised in a family where your word is your bond?”

That may well be true, but Billy didn’t learn that practice. I’ve known Billy for too many years. He has not lived up to that family lesson with me personally or with others he has worked with in business. Seriously…drive up to BloNo and ask around. The truth about our “honorable” State Senator is available to those who ask the right questions. I was largely silent in this campaign season until I heard him actually say those words. What a joke.

Sorry Rich…I don’t mean to be overly insulting or rude in this comment. I’ve worked with Bill in the past and just couldn’t stomach that commercial or that line.

Part of me hopes he wins just so we can watch him crumble under the reality of the office and the budget. Now that would be entertaining.

  8. Brady’s worst ad. He betetr hope this is not his cloer.

Comment by Niles Township Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 9:47 am

  9. Brady tries to make himself out to look like the happy warrior. Works only partly. Its’ not being a negative ad does give the impression that Brady is confident of his chances.

  10. For the love of Beau Brummel, couldn’t the videographer have fixed the professor’s tie in back?

Comment by walter sobchak Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:04 am

  11. what’s with Brady’s eyes in the “I’m the Guy” ad? I noticed that and my husband yelled it when he saw the commercial. Also, it’s reeks of used car salesman.

Comment by Amalia Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:05 am

  12. Brady ad runs well, just wish it actually said something beside the usual “I’m a good guy who will work hard, bring jobs, and clean up the existing mess.” Which pol TV spot does not say that? Might as well been any actor reciting lines. Wish Brady had a rep as a strong behind the scene guy, but every time I see his ads I keep thinking a Brady win will make for a very happy Madigan.

Comment by zatoichi Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:08 am

  13. Brady’s word is his bond. He’ll cut spending, balance the budget and not raise taxes.

If you believe that, you should vote for him, and hold him to it.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:10 am

  14. “I was raised in a family where your word is your bond”

Seems like that would be news to a lot of the folks involved in the Curtis Road interchange.

Comment by hisgirlfriday Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:11 am

  15. Brady looked odd in his commercial. I just saw him in person and he is looking very hale and gubernatorial. Not so much in that ad.

Comment by phocion Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:12 am

  16. The MoveOn ad is nearly identical in Wisconsin and other states according to their YouTube site. Same voices, nearly same photos (they rotate them with the same signs), just changing the name.

Go to YouTube and see for yourselves.

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:16 am

  17. Goerge Soros can be seen as a carpetbagger just as much as Karl Rove can be in my opinion. These senate seats have national importance, I suppose, which explains all the intense interest from outside sources.

Comment by dupage dan Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:20 am

  18. Brady’s ad: Ehhh. I liked it up until the last line. Then he capped off a positive message with a jab at the Dems, and not a succinct one at that. It can’t decide if it is a positive or negative ad. Maybe a 6.

Comment by Pundeete Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:22 am

  19. Goerge Soros can be seen as a carpetbagger just as much as Karl Rove can be in my opinion.

Perhaps… move MoveOn discloses all of its donors. Karl Rove doesn’t.

  20. === If you believe that, you should vote for him, and hold him to it. ===

Read my lips, no new taxes….

That worked out well, didnt it? :)

Comment by Ghost Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:35 am

  21. dave,

Is there some kind of law that requires Rove’s group to reveal their donors? If so, failing to do so would be a crime, right? The fact that neither individual lives in Illinois was my point. George Soros is a MAJOR contributor to moveon. Rove ain’t rich enough to come up with that kind of scratch for his group.

Comment by dupage dan Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:36 am

  22. Circular, GOPers are gonna rush(and have been rushing) to the polls to vote for Brady. They are sick and tired of Blago/Quinn and they will be out to change things.

Comment by Wally Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 10:58 am

  23. I haven’t liked any of Brady’s ads which feature him. Doesn’t he have ad people screening these? He looks weird.

The crossroads ad is low but effective.

My favorite is the Move on ad. That is a very effective appeal to voters desire to do the right thing.

  24. Rich, thank for posting the video of Professor Jorge Villegas…informative and interesting. That is a prime example of why this blog is so successful.

  25. All I’ll say is that to a lot of us (and hopefully, most of us), if there is someone who ought to know about the subject of corruption, it is Karl Rove. I wake up each morning satisfied in the knowledge that Mr. Rove is one day closer to having to explain himself to a Higher Authority, who may not be in a forgiving enough mood for Rove’s sake.

  27. No Wumpus, Kilbride is an excellent Supreme Court Justice who is being attacked with bogus and false shots like yours. He is a fair and moderate justice who deserves retention. Individual Supreme Court Justices do not let anyone “go”. Anyone with any knowledge of the justice system would know that; people carrying water for political hit squads don’t care about facts.

  28. I like the Brady Ad, It really combats the Quinn’s “Who is this Guy?’ A-

Comment by downstate hack Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 11:59 am

  29. Wumpus -

Aren’t you the guy who kicks dogs and doesn’t pay his taxes?

Of course not, but I have every right to wonder out loud whether something is true that I know to be completely false, right?

Seriously, dude, wondering out loud whether something is true is absolutely slanderous.

For one thing, because he was in the minority, not one single person was released as a result of Kilbride’s rulings.

Secondly, Kilbride never argued for anyone’s release, just their retrial or re-sentencing. Because these were cases where procedures were not followed according to his interpretation of the law.

Granted, following procedures isn’t always that popular, especially in heinous cases like those cherry-picked by Ed Murnane.

That’s how Illinois ended up with so many innocent people on Death Row, remember?

    Maybe you don’t.

Granted, upholding the law in cases of heinous crimes doesn’t make you very popular…much better to just drag the accused out into the town square a week before the election and Hang ‘Em High if you want to win a popularity contest.

Which is of course why judicial retention races were never designed nor intended to be popularity contests.

We don’t want or need judges who do wants popular. That’s what Governors and state lawmakers do, with mixed results some would say.

We want judges to do what is fair, just and right.

  31. Brady Commercial is an A+. Positive what voters are looking for in their ads. Congrats Brady campaign.

Anti-Alexi Ad. B-. Can we come up with something else please? (sigh)

Pro-Alexi Ad. C. Wow that ad gave me a headache moving to all the different people. I would have felt better if instead of pictures they were real people. (Stupid point maybe but no real effect).

Kilbride Ad - B. It doesn’t do anything for me but well put together.

    Comment by CM46 Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 2:14 pm

  32. Mob bankers….So Alexi is getting the Soprano and Godfather fan vote….

Calling him a mob banker is almost as scaything as saying he sometimes eats with his elbow on the table /yawn.

Comment by Ghost Friday, Oct 22, 10 @ 3:45 pm

  33. The Brady ad reinforces all of the feelings I have about his insincerity. It is a frightening reminder of Rod B. Amalia is right — used car salesman. I keep waiting for him to offer “zero interest for 4 years and no money down”.
