* Chicago neighborhood integration grinds to halt, according to Census data: Here, 81 percent of blacks would have to move in order to be distributed as evenly across the city as whites, down slightly from 83 percent in 2000, according to a Sun-Times analysis of data from the Census Bureau’s 5-year American Community Survey. For Hispanics, that figure is 49 percent for 2009 compared to 47 percent in 2000… Nationwide, a similar index calculated by professors from Brown University and Florida State University showed an average of 65 percent for black-white segregation and 52 percent for Hispanics.

My question with respect to racial integration would be—why would blacks have to move? Why not
provide social and financial incentives for, say, whites to move into black neighborhoods. If you make the move economically and socially attractive enough, they will come. Ditto Asian and Hispanic neighborhoods, although the language barrier could be an additional roadblock in those neighborhoods.
Actually, we have a version of this approach here in Oak Park (where for sale signs are still not allowed on real estate, decades after the block busting 50’s and 60’s), where for years a local and highly praised housing center engaged in a form of (legal) “steering,” (and probably still does). Perhaps Chicago should take note. Oak Park is far more diverse than many of its suburban Chicago-area counterparts. It’s an ongoing project though.

Calling 2500 N Elston “Bucktown” is really a stretch. Not mentioning a slew of other big box stores all along Elston is a blatant attempt to portray this as a Walmart infestation. Anyone who has driven Elston from Ashland to Diversey knows that it’s big box heaven and closer to a suburban strip mall than a city street in every way. Actually, it’s a perfect fit for a Walmart -that’s why I never shop on Elston!

Cassandra - nobody is asking for blacks to move. It’s a statistical measure, an index, that shows how many blacks would have to move for all neighborhoods to have the same percentage of blacks. Since blacks are in the minority, it makes more sense, statistically, to measure that number. Same for any other minority group. It’s just math.

I know that. But there are different ways of framing the data. When we think of racial integration, we still tend to think of white neighborhoods resisting integration. Historically,
that is understandable. But the problem (assuming residential racial integration is still a prized goal) is more complex now. Perhaps some incentives need to be reviewed.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s idea of Heaven must be a land without Courts or Doctors.
Meanwhile, I’ve yet to hear their comment on Walgreen’s copyright lawsuit against Wegmans over their logo. The offense? Wegman’s logo also uses a cursive “W”. You be the judge.

So why is ok for Preckwinkle to move all ex City and Olympic people into her administration? Isnt the city in massive deficits caused by Daley, and a so called independent democrat is supporting and moving democratic machine into high level spots??? Obvioulsy the talent at City Hall inst the great. But they are connected to Daley so that is enought huh? Does anyone else see a bad pattern here? The clowns are moving from City Hall to the County building so John Daley can continue to pillage the county. How dumb are we?

I feel the Illinois online shopping tax amnesty program deserves more attention. Tax amnesty programs generally have an “or else” to back it up, but how will it be enforced? Also who has a record of their non-taxed online purchases dating back to ‘04?
Congress needs to take action on this. Online retailers should not be given preference over local retailers who employ locals and pay property taxes while collecting sales taxes.

a pause to mourn the loss of The Enterprising Kitchen, the producer of lovely products, the teacher of women in need of job training skills. even Eileen Fisher purchased products from TEK to use as corporate gifts. this is a true loss for the women in need and those who valued the products.
