Huge storm. Power has been out for hours. Battery is dead on laptop. Posting this with my Treo, but juice is low on that, too.
Capitol Fax is looking iffy for Monday.
UPDATE: This storm was gigantic. No idea when power will be restored. No damage near me, but the generating plant is offline as I write this and there’s apparently massive power infrastructure damage.
From the reports I’m hearing on the radio, Springfield may be needing lots of help.
UPDATE: One storm was bad enough. then a second blew through. Now we’re all waiting for a third storm that looks pretty darned ugly. It’s been a long night. Still no power where I am.
Major kudos to WMAY radio for keeping us all up to date during what certainly appears to be the worst storm to hit this area in decades.
UPDATE: Temperatures will reportedly drop 15-20 degrees with this last storm front. No heat because there’s no electricity. Joy…
3 am FINAL UPDATE: The last storm has passed. Still no power. I’m going to bed.

(AP) SPRINGFIELD Authorities say a tornado toppled trees, knocked down power lines and blew roofs off homes in Springfield Sunday during its two-hour journey through Central Illinois.
National Weather Service forecaster Ed Shimon calls the length of time the tornado was on the ground or just above ground “a highly unusual event.”
He says emergency crews are responding to reports of gas leaks and power outages in Springfield.
The tornado touched down around 7:25 p.m. and made its way through the following counties: Greene, Scott, Morgan, Logan, Sangamon and DeWitt.

Just an update to the storm Rich is talking about since he probably won’t be able to get on for a while, the National Weather Service is reporting massive power outages, dozens of home damaged or leveled. At least 19 people injured. No deaths have been reported, but rescue crews are still digging through the rubble in places. There’s damage to buildings near the mall. Roofs blown off a couple places and severe structural damage to some buildings.
All of this and there’s another cell coming up out of Missouri that the NWS is keeping their eye on that could run right through Sangamon County around 2:00 am

Good luck.If and when you get back on check out what David Phelps, governor’s aide, admitted to that if re-elected Blago and his people would finish off any Republicans left in state goverment. We knew all along even with them denying it that the people fired where fired because of being Republicans.

Tinman it didn’t hit Chicago it hit Springfield and the Gov. won’t know until he reads it in the paper.

It’s sad this post couldn’t go 6 comments without mindless political nonsense. I’m officially done with this site as a result.

This is a political site. Why not expect it to go political? I thought the same thing about the governor, someone else just had the nerve to post it.
Lighten up.

If that was your first thought Splfd, to think of the Governor, then I feel really sad for you.

WMAY reports at 9:15 that a governor’s spokesperson said all “non-essential” workers stay home today. Insert your own joke about what is essential….

glad to see it took “so sad” 35 minutes to return after saying “I’m officially done with this site.”

So Sad you haven’t seen political yet.Wait until Blago’s PR people get done with this one.John Wayne will look like a cheap pimp compared to Blago.Plus the news goes on and why try to hide a spokesman for the governor making a statement like this.

I for one will take a little petty political bickering over having the midwest be “New Orleans II”. A lot of us have much to be thankful for. If you have internet, TV, power, and a roof over your head this morning take a moment to reflect on how lucky you are, and then return to and enjoy the partisan fray.

Heard Mayor Davlin (sp?) on 780 AM this morning. Was pretty bad here - but sounded pretty serious there. Hope things go well. Good luck. (And I’ll officially refrain from commenting on DOWNSTATE projecting the real George W. Bush on his fantasy version of Blagojevich - you’re only able to think that way because you’ve already seen it).

The Blue Room reports Pat Quinn and Alexander Giannoulias will hold a press conference Tuesday. Hope they plan to discuss the Crain’s column reviewing Alexi’s penchant for loans to gamblers and gun shops. Looks like Quinn wants some $$$ from the Giannoulias Gravey Train.

Redbyrd-
Yes - kudos to WMAY. Especially for warning rubberneckers to stay away from the Wabash, etc.

Rich:
You seem to need to be ‘connected’ whether power is on or not, assuming some wireless connectivity. You might want to buy a 50 buck car converter that will power/recharge your laptop. Also, you can get a portable gas generator for under 250.
