  1. So far it’s a blowout for Silverstein in 50, Cappleman ahead of Phelan by 900 votes in 46, and Egan edging Smith by less than 50 votes in 43.

Still about 35% of the vote still to be counted.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 7:53 pm

  2. Sawyer is ahead in 6 in a very tight race. Solis is in trouble in 25, and John Rice looks like he lost 36.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 7:56 pm

  3. Smith is now up by about 100 votes, Garrido-Arena too close to call (12 vote difference with 84% counted), Solis regains the lead by 200 votes.

Stone is done, Rice too and Lyle is very close to losing her seat to Gene Sawyer’s son.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 8:08 pm

  4. Oak Park tax increase for K-12 schools passes handily.

Not surprising. We love our access to the city, our money-pit, one-bathroom, 100-year-old houses and our high property taxes. We get oogots from the state for schools.

Since I’ve lived here, we’ve bonded out two new junior highs, improvements to our 100-year-old high school (Hemingway’s)_a fantastic new main library, improvements to two branch libraries, improvements to our elementary schools, including my neighborhood 120-year-old Longfellow, plus renovations to park district fieldhouses and fields.

That’s how we keep our property values high, educate and exercise our kids, and that’s How We Huskie. It’s a choice. Right, Cassy?

  5. Sure is taking a long time to finish up the counting. Egan has cut Smith’s lead to 67 votes with 20% still to be counted.

That’s as of 8:18pm on the Tribune site via AP. Did everyone have other “obligations” this evening? My refresh button is broken…

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 8:28 pm

  6. In 45, with 94% of the vote counted, only 42 votes separate Garrido and Arena. That’s with more than 11,000 total votes cast. That’s a close race folks. (8:28)

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 8:32 pm

  7. Sorry, 47th, I’ve been enjoying your updates. Down to a 14 vote diff. in 43 with 52/59 pcts counted. I hope Egan can pull a miracle out of his big Irish hat.

Comment by LakeviewJ Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 8:33 pm

  8. Thanks LakeviewJ. Could be a long night in 43 and a couple of other wards. Still, with only 14 Wards to count tonight, what’s taking so long? Watch out for the late precincts in close races.

  9. Bye, Bye Bernie!

  12. –Bye, Bye Bernie! –

Good thing Lenny Patrick’s no longer around. Or his old friend Fred Roti.

He should write an honest book. I’d buy it.

  13. Tight race in the 6th with Roderick Sawyer in the lead.

Comment by levois Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 8:46 pm

  14. With one precinct remaining, Garrido has a 28 vote lead over Arena with 12,000 votes cast.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 8:55 pm

  15. Solis is reelected. Cappleman wins. 41 is also very close, with O’Connor ahead by about 200 with over 13,000 votes cast.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 9:02 pm

  16. Looks like the GOP Staffers are headed to defeat tonight.

    Tumulity 61.84
    Andy Griswold 38.16

    Sam Cahnman 53.93
    Ryan Tozer 46.07

Both races have been called by the SJR. If a Repub. can’t win in Sangamon County, you might want hang up your election prospects for the future.

Comment by Give Me A Break Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 9:04 pm

  17. Remind me to ask about the re-map implications, if any, of the wide disparity in total votes cast by ward tonight. Some wards came close or had more than 10K total votes, others had half that. All of these were head-to-head races.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 9:06 pm

  18. It looks like Smith in 43, Sawyer in 6 and O’Connor in 41.

Arena edges Garrido by 29 votes in 45. 29/12,000. I still can’t get over that.

    Recount(s)?

  19. Bulls 91, Suns 89 with 3 minutes to go.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 9:18 pm

  20. From the West Side, it’s Bulls 97, Suns 94.

From Indy, TX-AM is up by 3 over ND with under 6 minutes to go.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 9:33 pm

  21. Jerry Schweighart, the birther mayor of Champaign appears headed to defeat - down 57%/43% with 70% of precincts in.

  22. –On WTTW, Lee is marching to Chancallorville–

Where Lee made his legend, dividing his army twice in the face of a superior force and winning in a rout.

But it led to the hubris of Gettysburg — an attempt to draw Grant from Vicksburg, energize the Copperheads, win European recognition and end the blockade, all in one smashing victory.

If not for Buford from Illinois, the 20th Maine o and the Iron Brigade of Midwestern farmboys, it might have worked, if Jackson had been there instead of Longstreet.

If you’ve never been, visit the beautiful rolling hills of Gettysburg. It’s the hinge of history, where freedom turned the tide against despotism, and it was a very near thing, indeed.

Read that old mouthpiece politician from Springfield’s words on the occasion and it’s moving beyond belief.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 9:49 pm

  23. Why hasn’t the 18th precinct in the 43rd Ward reported yet? Let’s declare this over and Michelle Smith the winner!

    Comment by 43rd Ward Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 9:59 pm

  24. Jerry “Obama is from Kenya” Sweighart, lost by 230 votes to Don Gerard for Champaign Mayor. Interesting

  25. Houston destroyed everyone for mayor of springfield….and the great Bill Black won 70% for his alderman race…so, the danville city council will actually be fun to watch.

Comment by Cuban Pilot Tuesday, Apr 5, 11 @ 10:13 pm

  26. Sam Cahnman was re-elected tonite as Springfield alderman. He beat a Cross staffer by 53-47% who ran a very nagative campaign.

  27. Big story from the 17th CD tonight … U.S. Rep. Robert Schilling’s chief of staff and policy director have both resigned with no reasons given … stay tuned

  28. Don’t know about the rest of the state but I was #68 at my local election spot at 6:30pm. Votes were only for school board stuff. Judges were thrilled to have any business. Turn out a tad slow.

  29. 47th and Word,

Don’t destroy episode 3 for me. I really like that T.J. guy. He has a lot quirks like that current governor of Illinois. For instance, Thomas likes to keep his left are raised in times of crisis and he constantly eats apples. with this many quirks, he could maybe one day become governor. Certainly, I hope he doesn’t accidentially die at the end. So, please put a spoiler alert on your posts.

Word, with that said, gettysburg is great. However, for purposes of Illinois History, Vicksburg is really the place Illinoisans should go. Illinois troops actually played a deciding role. The Illinois Memorial there is awesome. If Illinois didn’t have a budget problem, I would promote the restoration of the interior of the Illinois Memorial at Vicksburg. One of the best things I ever did was at Stop 3 or 4 of the guidede tour was charge up a 90 degree hill where actual soldiers from Iowa charged up with weapons in hand and people shooting at them. When I reached the top, I was tired and yet no one had shot upon me. Also, the Vicksburg Campaign guaranteed the legacy of Grant (who is the most underrated general and president in the history of the federal government). For Illinois History people, there is a lot of John A. Logan history at Vicksburg.

  30. A tea-party like slate ran the table in Yorkville for mayor and all the aldermanic seats that were up for re-election. Most of the current slate of Republican “No” candidates won re-election in Oswego. Kendall County seems (for now) to have ended its brief flirtation with voting Democratic, culminating with Obama and Foster carrying the county in 2008.

  33. BTW, my wife asked me why I was all of a sudden re-excited now about the Civil War. My reason was that next Tuesday (the 12th) is the 150th aniversary of Fort Sumter and the start of the Civil War.

  34. GOP tanking again in Illinois.

Not just Springfield. Repubs in Chicago become even more irrelevant. ZERO aldermen now with any Republican connection. There had been one.

Pat Brady’s not building a party with silly tweets and petitions and “NCAA bracket” contests. Go figure.

  37. “Not just Springfield. Repubs in Chicago become even more irrelevant. ZERO aldermen now with any Republican connection. There had been one.”

And that one did what to help establish the Republican party in Chicago? Garrido isn’t even really a Republican.

That being said, I was very surprised not to see much Republican help in 41 and 45, other than Skip and McAulliffe. I’m guessing it’s because it may have hurt more than it helped. But a total lack of effort with nothing else going on.
