Hey, don’t forget!

Posted in:

* The White Sox Caucus is meeting tonight at 9 o’clock at DH Brown’s. We’re playing the Angels, so it’s a late game.

Also, tickets will be available for sale at tonight’s caucus event for our annual outing at Sox Park this July 25th. Hopefully, I’ll see you at both extravaganzas!

* Let’s make this a late afternoon/early evening MLB open thread. Go Sox.

What’s your jersey number, Rich. I assume you play left field.

  3. Three straight games. The rally begins! The bats have come to life. Ozzie finally broke out the rum and cigars. What is this about a 6 man rotation? Is that even possible?

  4. Actually the Cards will toy with the Cubs trying to elict a Zambrano meltdown or other high jinks

  5. Glad that Milwaukee finally returned home after that atrocious week on the road. We also finally have Grienke on the mound, so let’s hope he’s worth the ca$h. If only their pitching lived up to their home run slugging….

  6. Wow, DH Browns. It’s been about 25 years, I wonder if they’d let me back in. Probably not, understandably.

The Sox are starting to hit. Everyone who was hitting the panic button, disabuse yourself until the all-star break, and then re-evaluate. You might as well give Castro a few more starts over AJ. And Juan Pierre? When you’re on first, pay attention.

Love Castro and Marmol. Another 23 players around them and you’d have something.

Hey, Hank Steinbrenner, Soriano’s leading the majors in home runs and Zambrano can’t lose.Bargains at any price. We’ll throw in Fukudome, too. All we want is prospects, you just take the salaries.

What a deal! Better snap them up before Boston does.

  10. Heading to Wrigleyville right now! I love playing the Cards. They’re a good informed fan base, respectful visitors (unlike the Brew Crew or the Rich Miller Crew) and a fun rivalry. But to you Cards fans talking trash above a review of recent history is in order, courtesy of Phil Rogers:

“In his years with the Cardinals, Chris Carpenter has faced 11 different Cub starters, but none more than Carlos Zambrano. Tonight’s game at Wrigley will be his eighth meeting with Big Z, and surprisingly the Cubs have gone 5-2 in those games, not losing in a Carpenter-Zambrano game since July 22, 2005. Here’s another surprising number about the Cards-Cub rivalry. During Albert Pujols’ 11 seasons, the Cubs lead the series, 87-81. St. Louis has won the season series only once in the last six years. Who needs Albert, anyway? ”

You may have the rings, but we’ve had you’re number as of late… Hey, you gotta hang your hat on something as a cubs fan!

  14. Hope springs eternal, at least when you win a few in a row. How can they play so well and so poorly a few days apart? I will enjoy this while it lasts. It’s 90 bleepin’ degrees in DuPage at 6:30- there should be a home game tonight!

As Harrelson is known to intone- Don’t stop now boys….

  15. –I saw Mantle play what I believe was his last doubleheader against the Sox in Chicago.–

    Awesome.

The first MLB game I ever went to was Cubs/Pirates in 1972 and I saw Roberto Clemente.

I’ve seen hundreds of games since, but he was the best of them all. Hit for power, hit for average, field, throw, run. Five tool player.

The only player close that I saw was the young, skinny, Barry Bonds. Why he frittered away his gift, I’ll never understand.

  16. Was in the right field bleachers with my dad in old Comiskey Park and saw Maris AND Mantle hit consecutive home runs off Early Wynn in 1961. Maris’ went in the upper deck and Mantle’s landed about 20 feet from us.

Three Hall of Famers and Comiskey in 1961. Wow.

Seriously, what was the day like, the whole vibe? Whitey, Moose and Yogi must have still been on the Yanks. Billy Piece, Nellie, Luis, and Minnie on the Sox. They were great rivals then.

Moose still prowls Madison Street in Forest Park. For the record, here’s a guy who played with Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Duke Snider and I’ve heard him say the best player he ever saw was……

    Willie Mays.

–BTW- Alfonso Sorianno can hit home runs period. He cannot so anything else.–

Not true. He can cash some awfully powerful checks.

  19. in 2005 I recall rooting them on one series at a time, urging them to take two-out-of-three to keep their momentum

All Star Break is such a good reference point for teams, now that we’re into May (and warm weather finally) it’s really feeling like baseball season

one series at a time guys - put it in play and keep throwing strikes

    GO BULLS!

  20. wordslinger- the place was packed and there was basically a low roar with louder cheering during exciting plays throughout the game, because when the Yankees or as my father would say, “The hated Yankees” came to town it was an event. We always went for batting practice which was an event in itself as you can imagine. Speaking of Roberto Clemente, during warms ups when he was just goofing around he caught a fielding practice fly ball near the wall in Wrigley Field and threw it in the air on the fly for a strike to home plate just for kicks. Everybody just stood there in amazement. I also saw Larry Doby for the Cleveland Indians hit a still rising line drive off the brick wall in center field at Comiskey Park about 20 feet up. I have never seen a harder hit ball. Aw memories!

  21. My 60th birthday.. Great game if the result doesn’t bother you.

6/20/2008 Wrigley Field Cubs 4 White Sox 3
Dye homers in the 2nd, Pierzynski in the 3rd, Lee and Ramirez hit back to back jacks in the 7th, and Aramis hits his 2nd of the game, a walk-off HR in the bottom of the 9th. Wood gets the Win, Linebrink the loss. Attendance: 41,106 (100% full)
Game Time: 2:32, Weather: 72 degrees, partly cloudy, Wind: 5 mph, Umpires: Home Plate - Tim Mcclelland, First Base - Mike Dimuro, Second Base - Mike Estabrook, Third Base - Mike Everitt

  22. Lefty, I just saw Clemente the one time in person, but a number of times on the 12-inch black and white out on the farm.

The best overall player I’ve ever seen in person was skinny Barry Bonds when he was on the Pirates. Five tool player.

The players you’d stop whatever you were doing to watch hit were Mike Schmidt and Frank Thomas.

Schmidt seemed to hit three taters every time he came to Wrigley.

Thomas just may have been the best right-handed hitter of all time.

Ichiro is unique. He doesn’t strike out, he doesn’t walk, he puts the ball in play just about every plate appearance. Fast as can be and can throw a frozen rope.

Comment by Timmeh Tuesday, May 10, 11 @ 8:48 pm

  24. Best fielder at his position I ever saw- Brooks Robinson, Best Pitchers- Bob Gibson(R) or Sandy Koufax (L), Hardest to get out as a hitter- Roberto Clemente. Best interview- Yogi Berra “It’s like de ja vu all over again. Nobody goes there anymore. It is too crowded.”

Comment by Lefty Tuesday, May 10, 11 @ 8:55 pm

  25. Best pitcher I ever saw was Gibson, and I’ve seen them all since the early 70s. You’d have to be out of your mind to dig in against that guy.

Curiously, I saw an interview one time with Gibson and he said the best pitcher he ever saw was Seaver. As great as Seaver was, I think Gibson was being generous. I don’t think Bob Gibson ever put himself second to anyone in anything ever.

Having said that, I’ve really enjoyed over the years the craftsmanship of Jenkins, Maddux and Buehrle. Real artists.

Neither Maddux or Buehrle could break glass with their fastballs, but when they were hitting their spots, you couldn’t do anything with them.

Years ago, I snuck down to the Tribbie seats behind home, put my feet on the bricks and watched Maddux put a Golden Sombrero on Big Cat Gallaraga. O Fascinating to watch — changing pitches, changing speeds, changing locations. Total control of the game.

And I saw Thurman Munson play his final game against the Sox before his plane crash. Maybe 10,000 other people joined me that evening.

  29. Musial, before my time, but what a player, year in and year out. Still kicking, too.

I was definitely not a big fan of Pete Rose (overrated slap hitter, had no real position in the field), but I almost caught his last career home run in the bleachers at Wrigley when he was player/manager for the Reds.

And on a cold rainy day at Wrigley, I saw the great Johnny Bench try to extend his career by playing his first game at third base. The Cubs lead-off hitter, nasty Larry Bowa, bunted the first pitch down the third base line and Bench booted it eight ways to Sunday. He retired a few days later.

    Nasty Larry Bowa.
