* Here’s another photo from last week’s highly entertaining Capitol Capers spoof of the Wizard of Oz. Today’s features Senate President John Cullerton as the Wizard and Rep. Karen May as the “Good Witch”…
Thanks to Lee Milner for the pics.
* Yesterday’s winner was “The Captain” for this gem…
Look ma, I sheared Grover.
TC gets a free ticket to this summer’s White Sox Caucus party at the ballpark. Today’s winner will receive the same prize.
* And, as always, keep it clean, people. Thanks.

But it’s so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy’s? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.

You see Senate Republicans, back where I come from, we have back rooms, seats of great learning, where Senators go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have! But they have one thing you haven’t got - bills, like this one I’m holding here.

Since the entire Wizard of Oz is an allegory for Salem, Illinois native William Jennings Bryan (and son of an Illinois State Senator) and his campaigns for President, my entry paraphrases his famous Chicago convention speech:
“Having behind us the producing masses of this nation and the world, supported by the commercial interests, the laboring interests and the toilers everywhere, we will answer the bankers’ demand for a gold standard by saying to them: You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of pension payments.”
Oh wait — I guess Cullerton wouldn’t quite say it that way.

I’m outraged (waaayyyy, crazy-like outraged) to see the confusion and disrespect in the show and comments about the “Wizard of Oz,” certainly one of the greatest movies of all time from one of the great movie years of all time, 1939.
Here’s the deal: the Wizard was a phony and a rascal, and he didn’t wear a crown and robes. He didn’t have a scene with Glinda. Although Cullerton looks a little bit like Wallace Shawn, the “Wizard of Oz” has nothing to do with “The Princess Bride.”
It’s like Henry Hill sitting down with Bonnie Parker to figure how they’re going to get Don Barzini.
I’m in earnest about this! I will not equivocate!
