* 10:11 am - The House Democrats have posted their new maps. Click here to see them.
* 10:20 am - Well, the Google Maps program was up when I did this post, but it’s down now. And I couldn’t figure out how to get the data before they took it down. Check back.
* 10:22 am - Try this one instead.
* 10:27 am - OK, it disappeared again. It appears that we’re playing a little game of cat and mouse. I’ll just back off for a bit. Please post anything you see in comments. Go here for the announcement. Clear your cache every so often, however.
* 10:55 am - A reader was able to download the HDems’ Google Earth file before it disappeared. I’ve now posted it. Click here for the file. One big caution: We’re not 100 percent sure yet whether this is the map they’ll formally release. Speaker Madigan’s spokesman denied knowing anything about the map release time.
* According to this map (thanks to a commenter), it appears that GOP Reps. Ron Stephens and John Cavaletto are in the same district.

Here’s a strange workaround, but a way to view that Google Earth file without a download.
1) Go to http://maps.google.com
2) In the “Search Maps” box paste this crazy URL: “http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=211224011660062925886.0004a3b72e644ab4953c3&start=1&num=20000&ll=41.389173,-89.165039&spn=2.299578,4.224243&z=8&output=kml” and hit Search Maps
* According to the map I have, GOP Reps. Dan Brady and Keith Sommer are both in the same district.
* Again, according to the map I have, GOP Reps. Bill Mitchell and Chapin Rose are paired in the same district.

* 12:04 pm - Again, via a commenter and double-checked, the map I have puts GOP Rep. Tim Schmitz and Mike Fortner together.

These guys are going to be OK. They just have to move.

The 112th District got a nice haircut that will benefit Jay Hoffman, if he decides to run again.
Dunlap Lake, Holiday Shores, and Prairietown have been shaved off. Those were republican-leaning precincts in Kay’s base.
If Jay was only thinking about running before, he’s in now.
* 12:30 pm - I’m told (can’t say by whom) that this map we have is “99.9 percent accurate.” The district pairings we have so far are right. The only differences between this map and the “real” map are extremely minor and don’t impact things like which member is in what district. But, keep in mind, this is not a legal copy.
* 12:38 pm - Drew Veeneman at PrecinctMaps.com told us in comments that he’s created some pdf files with county and township outlines…
* 1:18 pm - Daily Herald…
[Republican] State Reps. Chris Nybo, of Elmhurst and Patti Bellock, of Hinsdale, have been drawn into the same district.
* 1:57 pm - I’ve been told that the map we have almost perfectly matches up with the Senate district map.

Rich, do you know if the House Dems plan on releasing a Google Earth version as well? Their site is loading painfully slow, I assume because of all of the traffic it’s getting.

I was able to take a look. The City lakefront districts are really pathetic. Long skinny districts that make petitions a pain (there is really no central area where all the people live in the same district). And my area on the north side is a tiny spec in a southside district.
Winners draw the maps, but this one even offends people on the side of the winners. I may vote Dem, but I’m tired of voting for Dems that ignore my neighhborhood.

FWIW, from a quick & dirty look at the map, it seems like it’s corresponding w/ the map the Senate released. i.e., simply nested the House districts within the proposed Senate map, rather than offer a totally unique map w/ different Senate & House districts….
If that’s the case, it’d boost the likelyhood that this is the official release & that there’s buy-in from Democratic leaders in both chambers.

As Jasper noted above, downtown Chicago (Near North, West Loop, and South Loop) easily has enough population for at least 1 House district — and that’s the part of the city that’s actually growing. Assuming that Google link is the correct map (and the Senate maps yesterday already showed this was going to happen), the downtown/42nd ward is again divided into 4 districts. That’s disappointing. This allows Reps. Dunkin, DuBuclet, and Currie — who live within 2 miles of one another on the south side to each have their own district.

I know it was posted yesterday that it looks like the remap will be tough for Sam McCann, but what do you think about Wayne Rosenthal in the 95th? He wouldn’t have Springfield and Decatur, which I assumed were the more liberal parts of McCann’s new district.

In the Know: I have Sommer living in Morton, which includes Dan Brady’s part of Bloomington. Of course, either one could move over to Cultra’s Senate District, which has no reps.

Based on present home addresses Sommer would be in the new 88 (Morton) and Dan Brady in the new 105 since he lives on the far east side of Bloomington. Brauer would be in the new 87th.

Rollin’, I wouldn’t say Springfield and Decatur are “more liberal” by any stretch of the imagination. Decatur especially trended very hard R in the last election cycle. Bobby Schilling cleaned Phil Hare’s clock in Decatur, and Kyle McCarter outperformed expectations after pundits initially predicted Tim Dudley would win Decatur.

Looking at central and western IL, this appears to be a map designed to limit the number of downstate Democrats. It creates super Democratic districts that will be easy to defend in places where they easily could have created two winnable Democratic-leaning districts instead of one.
Ex. Springfield - Decatur. Rock Island/Moline. Champaign/Urbana.
This is a good map for downstate Republicans.

Can’t have all that population growth in the Loop/River North lumped into one district. A district that cohesive and affluent could end up a stronghold/fundraising powerhouse for an ambitious dem.
Or maybe based on the average Rush & Division Viagra Triangle resident it would go republican.

Looks like they put a hit on Saviano. Might be tough for him to win in his new “home” district that includes big chunks of Oak Park and Austin. Or it could be Camille Lilly might have the tough race on her hands - still a lot of Elmwood Park , River Grove and Franklin Park in the new 78th. Hope I’m reading this right.

I agree on the Saviano observation. Saviano will need big numbers in River Grove and Franklin Park (FP has been leaning Dem for a while, but always went well for Saviano), and he needs “turnout” in EP … as for the Oak Park and city side, those are not “Good” precincts for Saviano, they are very heavy Dem … right now is a wash… tough road, but this might be the first time since Geoff Obrzut that Saviano will have to really hump in that district.
On a side note, Harmon and Saviano have worked very close together, so it would not suprise me to see a “Harmon/Saviano” palm card, and Harmon helping Saviano in areas in Oak Park. Just a thought.

I had heard they have done similar in the past, their “district/s” like the two of them, and it has been no secret thay have worked together, the rub in this “love fest” will be the pressure MJM might put on Harmon if the HDEMs run a credible candidate in that district to take Saviano out.
Just an intersting map with the Saviano/MJM/Harmon connection. A “Ground Game” race in that House Seat for sure!

In some ways, this is a good map for Tom Cross.
First, his district appears to have been spared.
Secondly, he was always going to be in the minority, but redrawing the map with fewer downstate GOP districts ensures he remains minority LEADER.

Saviano is Cross’s money man. MJM doesn’t have to beat him to beat him, just keep him sufficiently busy.
PLUS, all these GOP primaries have a tendency to drain the coffers for a cycle or two.

You are right about that, thus the dynamic of the Harmon/MJM situation. If Madigan wants to keep Saviano busy, MJM is not going to be too pleased if out in the open and early on Saviano can feel comfortable east of Harlem Avenue and into Oak Park. I agree with you YDD, i just didn’t get into why I the trio make it interesting in all its ways.

I might be mistaken but it looks like Toni Berrios was moved to Delgado’s Senate District and a new district was created in Martinez’s district. At least, I think it’s new. I can’t find any reps who live in it.

60611 is quite correct. Yes, living downtown I can feel the squeeze, but there is no way anyone could get a Republicon district via any manipulation of these lines there. Think upper middle class progressives.
Sure, maybe 15 to 25% (in a very good year) GOP votes in 2nd and 42nd (throw in 27th also) wards that comprise these areas. No more than that.

Squeezed out: There is a lot of money in 42. In an off year, a Republican definitely could have a chance.
But the real impact is not Dem/GOP. Even with the affluence, it probably still is Dem.
What matters is that a heck of a lot of people in that area who vote Dem would prefer a Dem like Brendan Reilly — a Dem who cares about the budget. Think Ken Dunkin cares about whether people in River North have to pay higher taxes? And whoever ends up in Will Burns’s district (yeah, I know somebody was appointed by anybody can win next year) will not give the north end of that district (or the taxes people in that area pay) much thought either.

Pot you need to look at a map of the 42nd Ward. Cabrini Green is gone. There are few places where housing is even moderately priced. The vast majority is upscale condos and luxury apartments. A ton of turnover too to go along with the money of the residents. If the GOP cannot do well in the 42nd Ward, they can’t do it anywhere. Saying Kirk did well in 42 is not saying he’s a Dem by any means.

–Looking at central and western IL, this appears to be a map designed to limit the number of downstate Democrats. It creates super Democratic districts that will be easy to defend in places where they easily could have created two winnable Democratic-leaning districts instead of one.–
The ISRA is going to love that.
Skip might have to work harder in Oak Park precincts, but there’s a lot of cross-pollination across North Avenue already. I’m sure he’ll have the St. Giles crowd pounding doors for him — and you don’t see anyone pounding doors for Republicans in Oak Park right now.
