Quinn to Danville: Don’t hold your breath

Posted in:

* Gov. Pat Quinn was adamant during a Chicago press conference today that if the state is going to expand gaming, then he wants to keep it as narrow as possible. He strongly indicated that Chicago could get a new casino, but here’s what he said when he was asked what he’d say to the mayor of Danville, who also wants a new casino…

“I would tell him not to hold his breath.”

Downstate casinos are seen by some as a way to find votes for a Chicago casino. Sometimes, casino bills are too big to pass, but sometimes they can be too small. Time will tell.

* The governor has said time and time again that he opposes any education spending cuts in the budget. Asked whether he would veto a budget which cut education spending, Quinn wouldn’t go that far…

“No. What I’ve seen so far needs improvement.”

* The governor also indicated that he would sign a bill which passed today that protected the identities of FOID card holders. Gov. Quinn danced around questions about whether the newly proposed Senate district map was fair, but he did heap praise on the “openness” of the mapmaking process, pointing to the numerous committee hearings held and the upcoming hearings.

* Listen to the entire Q&A…

…Adding… From the AP

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says groups working on legislation to modernize electricity delivery systems have “thrown in the towel.”

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, an Orland Park Democrat, is the bill’s chief sponsor. He says Quinn is mistaken and that he’s not giving up.

My take on Quinn’s comment was that ComEd had “thrown in the towel” on the original bill. That’s true. It happened weeks ago.

  3. So, this will pass with downstate voting for a Chicago only casino? Coming off an election where only 2 counties voted for Quinn, this will play real well. Kudos to Quinn for a short answer though.

  4. I thought the story on HB 14 was interesting.

    Rich, have you heard anything?

Is Quinn declaring the bill dead prematurely?

  5. The story is wrong, or at least inartfully worded. He said they’ve thrown in the towel on the original bill, which is true.

  8. Is there a market for a privately funded casino in Danville? I kind of doubt it, but if so, give them the authorization, They’re not going to draw from any existing casinos. Who gets hurt?

  9. We just hear that the “new” HB14 is better - I’m not buying it. Its all about ComEd wanting to guarantee higher profits at our expense for investments they can and should be doing anyways.

  10. If you have ever spent any time in Danville, you know that everyone holds their breathe there. Lawhoff Grain - smelly.

  11. I just don’t understand why Quinn doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything to solicit downstate legislative support. Am I missing something?
