*** UPDATED x1 *** This just in… “Official” map finally posted

Posted in:

* 3:20 pm - The House Democrats just now posted their official redistricting map…

* Google Map

* Google Earth (Right-click and save to your computer)

*** UPDATE 1 *** The Democratic congressional delegation will reportedly be in Springfield Saturday morning at 11 o’clock to take a look at their maps in the Stratton Bldg.

* 4:17 pm - True geeks will love this: The shape file.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Statement from House Republican Leader Tom Cross…

“It is disingenuous for the House Democrats to release this map late in the afternoon on a Friday with very limited access to demographic data and an analysis that explains why they drew the boundaries where they did. How can the residents of our state have time to access the information (online or by written request), digest it and be prepared to testify at a hearing in Chicago on Sunday afternoon? A hearing in Chicago and one in Springfield is not enough; we are calling for more statewide hearings in the next few weeks before a vote is taken.”

The next few weeks? That ain’t gonna happen, but nice try.

* Sun-Times

Illinois House Democrats posted a map of newly drawn legislative districts Friday but refused to offer any demographic information showing how minority-population shifts influenced their mapmaking.

The 118 House districts that comprised the map were shaped using 2010 U.S. Census data that showed marked declines in African-American populations and a significant uptick in Latino populations.

An aide to House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) would offer no insight into how the map was drawn or into the demographic make-up of each district, insisting only that the once-a-decade exercise in legislative mapmaking adhered to the Constitution and federal law.

“It follows the law. That’s what I know. That’s the way it’s always been done,” Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said.

  1. Any explanation for the “accident?”

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, May 20, 11 @ 3:28 pm

  2. Rich,

Any way you could ask someone about this little oddity? Someone deliberately carved in (or out) the south parking lots of Assembly Hall in Champaign.

    Just curious…..

    :-)

  3. Well, since this is the map ending in 0518, it really does make you wonder what the 0526 and 0530 maps are/were. In another thread, someone wondered if they were going to be released on those date, now I am starting to think that may be the case, representing fallback positions for next week.

  4. Gordy,

    Tailgaters?

Comment by Cincinnatus Friday, May 20, 11 @ 3:33 pm

  5. I think 518 and 530 are essentially the same.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, May 20, 11 @ 3:33 pm

  6. Cincinnatus: Agreed.

  7. I am haven’t noticed a change in my 530 maps from this 518 map.

Comment by Kyle Hillman Friday, May 20, 11 @ 3:36 pm

  8. Oh, this is just great! Some of the districts around Champaign are just weird, and have NO respect to what was before. AND, while I didn’t think it was possible, the 103rd is even more distinctly Democrat than it was before! Unbelievable!

Comment by Norm Davis Friday, May 20, 11 @ 3:55 pm

  9. ===and have NO respect to what was before.===

    Why should that matter?

===the 103rd is even more distinctly Democrat than it was before!===

Which means that the surrounding territory is even more Republican. GOPs were never gonna win 103 anyway.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:02 pm

  10. Gordy, whose district are those lots in?

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:05 pm

  11. Assuming there is no rapture this weekend, should we check in for a Saturday afternoon update Rich? I’m dying to see the new Congressional map and look forward to more howling in next week’s comments.

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:10 pm

  12. What happened to Mike Fortner’s district. Has it been swallowed up by Schmitz and Pihos?

Comment by Bye Bye Fortner Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:15 pm

  13. Also, is there going to be any issues for Pihos and Connelly?

Comment by Bye Bye Fortner Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:17 pm

  14. Reis and Eddy got treated better than most Democrats.

Comment by We got hosed Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:21 pm

  15. Things I’m curious about:

    1. Will Jerry Mitchell retire or if challenge Rich Morthland?

    2. Will Norine Hammond challenge Jil Tracy? Will Jil Tracy move to Quincy, where her family’s company is located?

    3. Do the Dems have someone picked to run in the new Springfield-Decatur district?

    4. Will Dwight Kay run in the proposed 108th? I believe he resides in Glen Carbon.

Comment by Team Sleep Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:22 pm

  16. We Got - try finding someone to run against either in that part of the state. I’m guessing it’s impossible. The same goes for finding someone viable to run against Brandon Phelps, Jim Watson, Dan Reitz, Tom Holbrook, etc. Those carve-outs may look “friendly” but it’s more practical than anything.

  17. ===Do the Dems have someone picked to run in the new Springfield-Decatur district?===

    No.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:33 pm

  18. ===Will Jerry Mitchell retire or if challenge Rich Morthland?===

Mitchell and Morthland don’t appear to be in the same district.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:37 pm

  19. Rich great work keeping track of all of this. It looks like Andre Thapedi has been mapped out of his district (if I’m looking at this right, if not please forgive me)?

Comment by Sleepless in ChiTown Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:46 pm

  20. Is there a public hearing Sunday on the House maps?

Comment by Guess Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:46 pm

  21. According to the State Board of Elections, Jerry Mitchell resides in Sterling and Richard Morthland resides in Cordova. Those towns are both in the newly-proposed 71st House District.

Comment by Team Sleep Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:57 pm

  22. And my bad: Dwight Kay would be in the new 112th district. I didn’t zoom in enough.

Comment by Team Sleep Friday, May 20, 11 @ 4:59 pm

  23. Tracy has already said she’s moving to Adams County. Democrats picked up some great precincts in South Galesburg. Hammond, a relatively weak candidate, may have a serious challenge in the general.

Comment by Louis Howe Friday, May 20, 11 @ 5:01 pm

  24. Made a nifty PDF with 2010 Election stats… covers Cook, Dupage and Kane County. I did it with the 530 kml file… but it sounds like that’s good enough from comments above.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, May 20, 11 @ 5:04 pm

  26. Andre Thapedi’s address listed at the BOE website is within his district, albeit barely.

  28. Any hits that the Dems take in the short term over the course of the next few weeks are worth the long term benefits of having a grossly gerrymandered map for the next decade.

Comment by Not It Friday, May 20, 11 @ 5:31 pm

  29. Republicans must have drawn the Eddy and Reis districts. If Democrats had drawn them, those two would have been put into the same district.

Comment by We got hosed Friday, May 20, 11 @ 5:44 pm

  30. ===Some of you might find these of interest too:===

That page would be a whole lot more interesting if the links to individual districts actually worked.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, May 20, 11 @ 5:49 pm

  31. The shapefile I downloaded from the link provided above isn’t complete and I can’t open it with my GIS software. Anyone know where I can get the complete shapefile? thanks.
