Rich, you could have included Water Reclamation Distirct Commission candidate Dean Maragos, who had the top ballot position and spent at least $400,000, only to apparently finish in sixth or seventh place out of a field of nine candidates.
It is one thing to lose narrowly, particularly in light of the turmoil caused by John Stroger’s stroke and its impact on other races (as African-American voters came out in droves to throw their support behind Stroger and black candidates running in other offices). It is quite another to spend more money in a primary for a lower-ballot office like MWRD Commissioner than anyone had prior to this year, have the extra bonus of the top ballot position and still only get about 70% of the votes needed to win one of the three nominations for the fall.
I suspect it will get worse for Maragos if he tries to run again for any office. He has been found out about his deceiving the IVI-IPO over his claim about never donating to the notorious Hispanic Democratic Organization (it only takes a few minutes to find the donation on the State Board of Elections website). So I present Dean Maragos as my addition to your list of losers.

It’s particularly silly to think that they’d drop someone into the County Board Presidency since you have to be a County Commissioner (with a district) to be the County Board President. There’s no reason you can’t get elected to both at the same time. but does anyone really see Emil Jones or Jesse White resigning their posts, moving to Stroger’s district, campaigning like hell and hoping to get the nod in November AND take Peraica on at the same time? Plus, this all assumes that Stroger’s going to resign both his Commissioner’s seat and his Presidency.
It’s pretty ludicrous, really. I’d put my money on someone like Moreno or Steele. Or, if Stroger resigns after his re-election, I could see it being Quigley or Suffredin. The 5 Republicans on the Board would much rather see one of the North Side Democrats than one of the South Side ones, and I could easily see a coalition of Suffredin, Claypool, Quigley, the five Republicans Commissioners and one more South Side Democrat (maybe even John Dalye) settle on a new President than I could see Steele, Moreno, Sims and the rest fighting amongst themselves to see who gets it…
