The 723 precinct committe men and women, elected or appointed will choose who the next US Rep will be. I think this process favors Mike Boland.

no doubt about it, the process clearly favors Boland. He has traveled the district and has been a media whore. Looks like it could pay off for him. The question is, will Boland work to get it. If he does, what does Madigan do?

Mike Boland can’t raise that kind of money. The republicans will be throwing cash at Zinga in this race. Boland’s self serving political ways can’t conjur up what it will take to beat her.

A lot of people think Boland pulled a cheap shot against Jacobs just before the election. Instead of calling Sen. Jacobs he held a press conference to lay blame and cry foul. He was told by Madigan to play nice. He obviously isn’t a team player and the RI county dems know that. Makes him difficult to endorse his congressional quest.

There are many millionaires who’d be willing to pay $10,000,000 for the nomination for a 50% chance of going to Congress. This means that the average committeeman’s vote or proxy is worth $10,000. Since you only need a plurity to be nominated, it might even be $30,000.
These democratic committeemen are used to “walking around money” on election days.
There is trouble afoot.

As a resident in this district, I am not happy with the situation Lane Evans put us into. This isn’t the way to run an election, and I have seen enough ugly politics. Whoever becomes the chosen one will be tarnished. We don’t need a back room pol. The Lipinski situation sucked, and the entire Democratic party in New Jersey looks corrupt for handling similar situations in such blatantly undemocratic ways.
Both parties are playing games like lunatics, trying to get an edge on the other. Now that Evans is stepping down, this game is showing up in my neighborhood, and we don’t want it. Electing Evans every other year was comfortable sleepwalking. We don’t want to get annoyed by hyper babbling liars fighting for our votes. It is a Congressional District, not a papal selection. Big time battlers do not fit our mode of style.
Will we switch parties? Phew! Who cares? What I know is we have one candidate chosen by primary voters and has been around the District for a few years. So, she’s a Republican - big deal! After a generation of Evans, isn’t it time to open the windows in this place? If she can’t cut the mustard, then we’ll see who the Democratic primary voters select next time.
Just because this District has become a battleground, doesn’t mean we are wanting to watch a fight. Evans has thrown his party into playing insider politics, and we want nothing to do with it.

Maybe we should call you Zinga Man? You blame Lane for fighting a tough battle with a terrible disease. Real classy. Why should Zinga just get a free pass? Just so you don’t have to endure campaign commercials? Give me a break. The people always deserve a choice.

It’s obvious that Evans and the bosses didn’t know of the special wrinkle in the law where 700 plus committeemen get to decide.
It’s not guaranteed, but the only way Evans can still have a say so over his successor is for him to resign immediately and have the governor call a special election to fill the balance of his term. Then hope like the dickens that Zinga doesn’t win and that the Committeemen will nominate the new congressman for the November election.
The best laid plans of mice and men….

Vanilla I agree its not appropriate to attack Evans medical condition but he is fair game politically. Lane was basically a socalist in the mold of Bernie Sanders. His Marine service protected him rightfully, but I think this is a GOP pickup. Jacobs is not his father.

If he’s willing, Sen. John Sullivan is the best choice. He’s a proven vote getter in a good chunk of the dist. already. He’s a great campaigner and a hell of a good guy.
Given the relative lack of talent in RI County, he might end up being the pick.

I agree Bardo, but apparently Bardo ruffled some feathers with Jacob’s family, and Denny is not happy. It all depends who makes the Dem’s choice. Area democrats, or the Dark Lord Rahm Emanuel. Christine Cegelis can attest to that.

The Jacobs-Boland fued is so tiring. Get the f*ck over it people.
This will be a race with national attention. Boland won’t have problems raising money. Boland’s last D-2 showed almost $150,000 in the bank, which isn’t a bad start.

Yeah, but throw that $150,000 out the window since it’s not hard federal dollars. He could make a lot of friends by giving it away… just can’t use it on the race for the 17th dist.

I think Sullivan would be the best candidate for this spot. His stance on issues are pretty close to the district’s and he has a voting record to back it up.
I think his proven ability to win a close election should also help him.
As a Republican, the candidate I would fear the most would be Sullivan.

Sullivan would win, but we would hate to “lose him” to Congress. He’s wields to much influence by virtue of his ability to hold a “Republican” district. As far as state government, we would be turning Western Illinois back over to the Republicans. It would not be good for the Democratic Party in Western Illinois. He can’t be replaced. Don’t leave us John!

Bardo, if I’m not mistaken, money from the state PAC can be transfered to a federal campaign fund if it meets federal guidelines. So he’ll have to throw some of it out, but not all of it.

Zigna will have an excellent opportunity to pick off this seat. District map is so favorable to an incumbant, that’s why they drew it that way to protect Evans, but not to a new comer against a candidate who has already run district wide. Zigna wins 52% to 48%. Sullivan can’t run because Republicans pick up the seat and take back the senate. Ain’t politics grand.

Boland supported several republicans through the years - even against Lane Evans. That won’t help him with the +700 dems in charge of this fiasco in the 17th district… Even if his wife is co-chairman of the county party.

MAybe Sullivan runs and Scholz takes his seat. Scholz would easily when Sullivans distrct so that would make it easier for Emil to part with Sullivan.

Hey Rich, the Quad City Times online site says this afternoon that Lane Evans is endorsing his staff guy Phil Hare for this appointment. Will all of these other wannabe’s line up behind Phil Hare?
