It was announced late yesterday that Phil Hare is Evans’s choice to replace him. Hare is the District Rep for the Moline office. He is also a very personable and caring guy. Looks like we have our man.

State Senator John Sullivan appeals to too many people- and if and when the various committeeman meet him- they will vote for him.

The game is on. Everyone has to decide to get in or get out. One of the big dogs is deciding that right now. Stay tuned.
Comment by McDem Friday, Mar 31, 06 @ 8:11 am
Hare’s gonna have the nomination. Evans endorsed him. Evans is too well liked for there to be much compitition.

Sullivan has it if he wants it. There are too many votes outside the QC. It also looks like the QC boys are going to cut into one another.

I hear Ted Brunsvold has already formed an exploratory committee.
Comment by Northshore ward Friday, Mar 31, 06 @ 10:31 am
This is a serious question, not a criticism: can someone give me more background info on Phil Hare? I know absolutely nothing about him.
Comment by Freddo Friday, Mar 31, 06 @ 10:33 am
Is Ted Brunsvold the rainmaker/lobbyist who works in Sprigfield? If that is the same guy, I doubt the he would take such a huge pay cut to run. Not too many Congressmen driving RangeRovers.

Freddo…here are some background points on Hare:
Lazy.
MANY Democratic enemies.
Used Lane for 24 years to support his own agenda.
Can’t be trusted.
Complete opposite of Lane Evans.
Ted B or Mike J for Congress!

No matter who the Democrats put up wil win. Andrea Zinga is a horrible candidate with a horrible reputation with the complete inability to raise money.
That being said I cannot stress enough how much or a horrible choice Phil Hare would be. There are so many skeletons in that closet that you would think the man raided a cemetery.
Phil is an obnoxious, backstabbing, self-serving man. He is completely insecure/paranoid and does not trust anyone. In short he would be an embarassment in Washington. In my opinion, the reason Lane’s campaign settled the lawsuit with FEC (remember that) after dening it is that the investigation got too close to Phil Hare - no proof just a gut feeling.
Finally, the fact that this vote goes to the precinct committeemen and not the chairmen still gives me hope that Phil cannot win becasue they don’t know him becasue he has barely stepped out of RI County in at least the past 6 years.
Finally, while I do not critisize Lane’s timing as some have I do critisize his endorsement. This was not a grand scheme to turn the seat over to Phil until after Lane decided to retire which I generally believe was announced no later than a day after he made his decision. But the inside info I have from friends in RI is that the only person to have Lane’s ear since that point was Phil Hare. No one else has had a chance to talk to Lane about their plans for the 17th except Phil. This is cronyism at its worst - which, if I’m not mistaken, has been a talking point for the Democrats in regards to the Bush Administration for some time.

Boland shouldn’t be counted out.

Count him out!

Phil is a great choice. It’s obvious that someone working in his position for Lane would make enemies in twenty-four years, but he is an articulate, personable individual who would make a great Congressman. Lane would not have endorsed him if he did not trust him and feel that he would represent the 17th District well. Phil has been a great friend to working people and veterans and will make be a great advocate for us in Washington.

DisplaceQCDem you are very close to the truth. The opposition research report on Phil Hare will just write itself. The FEC settlement is just the start.
I’m not sure there will be much love among organization democrats for Phil, and despite the precinct committemen’s love and respect for Lane, they all know that he has been increasingly manipulated by Phil and other s—bags during his illness. Hare should be ashamed of himself, and his defeat either at the slating or in the general will tarnish Lane needlessly.
Let’s not forget that this is a competitive district. Is Phil Hare ready for prime time against Zinga? Let’s go with a known property and a moderate who can hold the seat for a while.
Comment by Hare of the Dog Friday, Mar 31, 06 @ 1:25 pm
Hare of the Day seems to be desribing veteran State Rep. Mike Boland (D, Moline).
Comment by respectful Friday, Mar 31, 06 @ 1:27 pm
I don’t know about Boland’s opposition report, but I bet he won’t raise any money, and money he will need to beat Zinga. Over a million in a district with so many media markets, let’s say $2 million to be safe, because Zinga can raise that.
Somebody mention Rahm? Lane is great in part because won in ‘82 (with Durbin) in the Reagan backlash, and was a surprise winner, a guy who snuck up on them, benefitted from a divisive primary in which the incumbent lost due to a sex scandal (which involved then House member Dan Quayle and a Playboy interview), the perfect storm to put a heartfelt local boy in office. Now, this is different. A competitive seat, a decent year for Democrats, a fractured district (and party?) that has lots of angry rural folks who are diehard Republicans who may have been charmed and disarmed by Lane but now are free to date other people.
We need a pro, and Rahm (a pro but a robotic, conniving jerk nonetheless) will do polling and research, pick a winner and raise money like hell. I am a Democrat who likes to win, and for that reason I have to rule out Hare, Boland, and Mangieri. No one-term wonders, which means we need a moderate who can communicate and is a very hard worker (Boland and Mangieri fit here, but they were eliminated above), so what about Sullivan? No small media market guys (Sullivan, Scholtz out), and so this person has to come from Rock Island. What about old man Brunsvold? Does he have baggage? Does he want it (I know he did before). Young master Jacobs is not ready for prime time. RI Mayor?
Let us Pray…Please, Lord, by your mercy show the committeemen the light of political reason, lead them through the valley of premature political death and help them to see that Phil Hare will bring on the apocalyptic Republic plague of locusts, as well as the collapse of the fragile Democratic coalition that Lane built in thy 17th Congressional District. Amen.

I will not run nor will I accept the nomination of my party. Whoever is posting this joke please stop.
Comment by Uncle Fester Friday, Mar 31, 06 @ 2:17 pm
Does anyone know if Hare is healthy enough to run for this? Didn’t he have some heart problems not too long ago? He doesn’t appear to be in the best physical condition for the challenge ahead. 14 hour days, 7 days a week, for the next 7 months.
Comment by Anyone Else...Please!!! Friday, Mar 31, 06 @ 2:54 pm
Boland has a heart problem too. Other than calling press conferences, I don’t know what he is capable of doing. Thank goodness his wife has her position to help him.

Ted Brunsvold for Gov!! He’s got better hair than Blagojovich!!!! Seriously…..he should run.

Do you think Jim Mowen might run as an independent and split the Republican vote?
Comment by Rusty Lantern Tuesday, Apr 4, 06 @ 12:42 pm
I think it is very clear. John Sullivan is the best candidate. Yes, he might be from a small media market but his reputation reaches all the way to Chicago. He has already defeated two very well financed candidates winning over 60% of the vote in the last election. His moderate stance will undercut Zinga and he is loved in the rural areas. He has a strong relationship with labor. He is the only truly test candidate.
Comment by Anon Wednesday, Apr 5, 06 @ 7:46 pm
I think I’ll run. What the He**. I grew up in the IL QC and escaped right after HS graduation. I’ve been in Chicago ever since - 20 years. Western IL is again proving it’s stereotype of being a bunch of redneck illiterates. I’ll bring some Chicago politics to the district, that ought to make things better.
Seriousl: nominate Jacobs or his functionally unemployed brother and get this over with. Create yet another political family dynasty of hacks.
