Another Sunday, another tornado

Posted in:

It’s a good thing that I like my basement, because I’ve been spending a lot of time there lately.

Tornadoes made another Sunday night visit to central Illinois tonight, three weeks after the area suffered major damage from a pair of storms.

The most serious Springfield-area damage apparently was at the Lincoln Place mobile home park near Riverton. Two mobile homes were destroyed and dozens damaged, officials said about 8 p.m.

Authorities thought both the destroyed mobile homes were unoccupied, but dog teams were called in to search the sites.
Two women were injured, officials said. One woman suffered a non-life-threatening injury to her leg; the status of the other was not immediately available.

Officials were asking residents to leave the mobile home park tonight because of leaking gas lines and lack of electricity.
Elsewhere in Sangamon County, tornadoes were reported on the ground near Veterans Parkway and Wabash Avenue and near Loami. Trees were uprooted, power was knocked out, and the Illinois Department of Transportation headquarters lost part of its roof.

In general, however, storm damage in the Springfield area was much less severe than in the March 12 storms that tore across the city’s south side.

Outside Sangamon County, serious damage was reported to homes and businesses on Taylorville’s west side.

WCIA television in Champaign was reporting that the storm line also caused significant damage there and in Decatur.

More here, here, here, here, here and here.

Tribune coverage is here.

  1. ‘Tis the season… here in the Metro East we suffered a fatality when the Fairview Heights K&G clothing store’s roof collapsed. It was ugly here and we feel for those in the ‘patch (we have many family and friends there). I think the calendar is a few months ahead of time (warm January, early severe weather), could be due to the early scheduled adjournment!
