Golden Horseshoes, Round 3

Posted in:

* First, our winners from yesterday. The award for best lunch spot near the Statehouse goes to Cafe Moxo

Moxo- the pot pie cures all veto session blues

I haven’t eaten lunch there, but I have stopped by for breakfast and it was fantastic.

* Runner-up goes to Holy Land Diner

Healthy, delicious middle eastern buffet with Greek salad and olive oil everywhere. Afaf and Jamal make you feel like family. Try the Turkish coffee; that tiny cup will keep you awake for hours.

I also love that place. Excellent food.

* Best hotel

Hand’s down, The State House Inn! The bottom line is that the entire staff is like family when you pretty much live there for half the year. They implement suggestions and make accommodations when asked. They work hard to provide entertainment and snacks for us regulars in The No Name as well. As mentioned yesterday, there’s a lot to be said for the convenience of having a nightcap and being able to roll on up to your room.

I couldn’t agree more. I always tried to stay there when I lived in Chicago because of the location and the amenities.

* Runner-up

I don’t stay in a hotel, but my members love the Abe Lincoln because of the cost, the remodeling recently done, The Globe and the restaurant, and the parking. Plus Celtic is within walking distance as is the museum.

Definitely another good spot. The Hilton has upped its game recently by opening a bar and restaurant on the top floor. We’ll see how that goes. But the Bennigan’s in the building has the worst service I’ve ever encountered in this town, and the food just isn’t good. Yes, we’re rating hotels here, not restaurants, but that Bennigan’s means the Hilton has no chance of winning.

* OK, on to today’s nominations. This will be our last service industry category before moving onto politics…

* Best bartender

* Best waiter/waitress

As always, make sure to explain your nominations and do your very best to nominate in both categories. The intensity and creativity of nominations count far more than the number of nominations. Thanks.

  3. People, explain your answers and nominate in both categories. Thanks.

  4. Bartender - Adam at the No Name. Nicest guy in the world. He also knows a ton about a ton which makes him awesome to talk about anything from sports to history. He also pours a decent drink. And makes decent popcorn.

  5. And I don’t have a favorite server, though the owner/server at Maya was pretty awesome. Friendliest guy in town, and also kept the kitchen open late for us on late session days. Too bad they closed…

  6. This is a close one but I give the Nod to Kathleen at the Globe. She treats everyone with the upmost respect. It doesn’t matter if you are an elected official or a random girl off the street, you get the same great treament. Adam at the No Name bar is a great bartender but Kathleen wins because the Globe handles more customers.

  7. Both at Augies:
    Kim for bartender and Carl for waiter They both make you feel really welcome and go out of their way to make sure you are happy and well served

  8. Stan the Man at the Globe - always pleasant, thoughtful and eager to please.

    Carl at Augie’s - a trooper over the years.

  9. I give my proxy to the White Devil. He knows more than I.

  10. Hey Rich, speaking of restaurants: How about a Golden Horseshoe for best food option between Springfield and Chicago?

    It ain’t really a Springfield question, so its more of a Pseudo-Horseshoe, but plenty of people around here would benefit from suggestions on where to eat on the long food desert of I-55.

    Comment by Senator Clay Davis Thursday, Dec 8, 11 @ 2:43 pm

  11. Bartender is: Kathleen Hunter at the Globe. She knows everyone, treats everyone like a king or queen. Remembers your name, remembers your drink. She’s got seniority in this town.

    Rhonda Merritt at Sportsmans. She’s a hard worker, personable, doesn’t take any crap from anyone, great sense of humor.

  12. I’m going with Kathleen at the Globe too. She’s been there a long time, so long that I can’t think of the Globe without thinking of her. They are synonymous in my mind. I’m not a regular by any stretch of the imagination, but she always remembers me and my drink of choice is ready before I even get a seat.

    I realize this is limited to Springfield as it should be, but the best bartender in Illinois is Jerome, formerly of Southport City Saloon and now at McNamara’s on Irving Park Road. Tell him I sent you.

    Unfortunately I am not familiar enough with Springfield’s talented wait staff, so I’ll abstain.

    How about between Springfield and Cairo? East to West.

  14. How about we just stick to Springfield? :)

    Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Dec 8, 11 @ 3:31 pm

  15. Bartender: Roni at Maldaners…”she’s quick with a joke or to light up your smoke…” Okay not really but she is smart, funny, engaging, insightful and can make excellent drink/wine suggestions based upon one’s mood.

    Server: I’ll go with Carl at Augies too. He knows his stuff, is effecient and personable.

    Comment by Bitterman Thursday, Dec 8, 11 @ 3:41 pm

  16. Best bartender……….Johnny O at Ross Issac. His wit is as dry as his Martini. Best waitress at the same place, try Jen, she will remind you of Carla at Cheers.

    Comment by Keyser Soze Thursday, Dec 8, 11 @ 4:18 pm

  17. Best bartender: Bob at the Butternut Hut, Johnny O close 2nd
    Waitress: Squirely Shirley@Saputo’s
    Why. If we told you we would need to kill you

    Comment by CicularFiringSquad Thursday, Dec 8, 11 @ 4:40 pm

  18. KATHLEEN at the GLOBE. No contest.

    Comment by Lou Thursday, Dec 8, 11 @ 8:56 pm

  19. Kathleen at the Globe. Her personality alone allows her to win…..but her ability to know practically everyone’s name, their drink, and what they do is impeccable. To top that, she works her a$$ off behind the bar. Rarely, if ever, do you “wait” for a drink. Even when the joint is packed.

    Comment by downstater Thursday, Dec 8, 11 @ 10:48 pm

  20. Bartender: Mike. Those who know Mike know what I’m saying. No doubt about it. He knows your name and better than that he knows your drink. You walk in and by the time you hit the bar your beverage is waiting. No one better in town.

    Server: Josh at scandals. Sometimes you want some beefcake with your cheesecake.

    Comment by Hugo Thursday, Dec 8, 11 @ 11:38 pm

  21. Best Bartender: Mike from Browns! He has been around for well over 15 years and has served drinks to almost every legislator, lobbyist and staffer in town. He has heard his patrons talk about where all the bodies are buried and never spills the beans. Hands down, Mike is a staple of the Springfield legislative game and deserves the title of the Golden Horseshoe recipient, 2011.
