· The Rezko beat:
Real estate developer Antoin “Tony” Rezko’s plan to extricate himself from another soured deal has hit a snag. Unable to get a 24-story River North condominium tower off the ground, Mr. Rezko and partner Daniel Mahru decided last year to sell the development site at Chicago and Hudson avenues. The problem: They signed a contract to sell the property for $9 million, but they owe the property’s lender, Chicago-based Broadway Bank, about $12 million.

Jay Hoffman reluctantly supports legislation to pass medical malpractice reform and then as the article describes introduces legislation to reward his trial attorney firm. Shame on you, Jay Hoffman.

Shame on you Lee for commenting on something you know absolutely nothing about. First of all, ISMIE is not reducing their base premiums despite the fact that they doubled their net income in 2005. Secondly, they are masking other increases by announcing cuts in “average premiums” instead of base premiums. Premiums for Doctor in 7 specialties and in Grundy, Jackson, and Winnebago county are actually increasing as much as 20%.
Finally, SB 1911 codifies the collateral source rule which is the practice in 27 other states and has been common law in Illinois since 1870 (so much for Illinois being the only state in the nation where this practice is allowed). Insurance companies can’t beat the bill on its merits, so they resort to scare tactics like saying it will increase medical costs by 50% (which of course they can not prove), even though the GAO says has repeatedly said that medical malpractice premiums account for less than 2% of total medical costs. What Senate Bill 1911 will do is make it easier for medical bills to be entered into the record and will definitely cut down on the time and expense needed to prove a medical bill reasonable. Is it better for plaintiffs, sure, but it will not raise medical costs anymore than ISMIE is actually cutting insurance premiums. However I am not surprised by the inaccurate article since that is how big business and large corporations continue to fool consumers in this country.

I noticed that also, Ron B. Alexi is out $3M, I guess. Hope he doesn’t plan on making bad loans like this if he is elected Treasurer, especially when, in his words, the role of the Treasurer is to get the highest % rate of return for the State.
Magieri was the better candidate…

I don’t know what your definition of “downstate” is Bubs, but last I heard central Illinois was a big chunk of downstate, and there the Gov is at a whopping 19 percent. He’s statistically tied with Meeks in that area. Maybe you’re spinning a different wheel, but in what world is that polling “so well”?
