What’s wrong with the city seeking sponsors? It beats higher taxes any day of the week.

Furthermore, if the small fraction of the population who reall cares about advertising on city signs is so offended by it, they have an option: they can themselves buy the advertising space and not put anything on it.

What a Fair lineup! Big and Rich maybe. The rest…better acts in the beer tents for free.

Mike Smith, what were you thinkin’? An esteemed member of the Collar County Insiders, an influential voice for his community, getting tripped up for this. Public officials have been fired over less than this. I know, lots of public officials and staff have been to a Strip Joint before, to blow off steam or whatever, and they are OK as long as the visit doesn’t attract any undue attention.
But that credit card belongs to the good people of New Lenox, a great many of whom wouldn’t approve of their money being used in this manner, if only for a fleeting moment before being reimbursed. And once a public official shows they are willing to use a public credit card to ring up a $1000+ bill on this sort of “entertainment”, everything they do is suspect. A higher standard is expected than your average corporate mope with a company expense account and credit card…sad but true.

Glasgow is looking into reimbursement of charges on Smith’s village AmEx card with his campaign funds. Last night at the board meeting he tried the “I’m sorry, forgive me” bit, saying he was a “lover” of the community. Just a bit of poor judgment, you know, I’m just human, like everyone else. Oh, the other $1300 charge that night he couldn’t account for? VIP’s. Sad that his supporters last night even brought children to the meeting. Class act. Nice example to set.
