* The Southern Illinoisan has declared that “coal” is the number one issue in the 12th Congressional District race, and so it endorsed Jason Plummer…
Coal is the biggest issue in the vote for the 12th Congressional District and Plummer is the most aggressive in promoting the potential for Southern Illinois coal.
An industry that employs 4,400 people in a region that’s thousands of square miles is the number one campaign issue?
OK.
* The paper’s editorial board believes that Plummer will grow in office…
Plummer gets the nod over Enyart, even though the former general might initially be a more influential voice for the district because of his depth of experience and military connections. The latter would serve the district well in charting a sustained future for Scott Air Force Base. But Plummer is no stranger to Scott; it is the base he serves as a Naval Reserve officer. And his tenacity and tireless nature as a campaigner are characteristics likely to carry over into congress, serving constituents and transforming the freshman congressman into an eventual leader.
It also is worth noting that with the near-certain re-election of Republican U.S. Rep. John Shimkus to the 19th Congressional District, the region would be represented consistently by GOP congressmen. Teamwork will aid the district and it is more easily achieved by members of the same political party.
…Adding… The St. Louis Post-Dispatch endorsed Enyart…
Mr. Plummer shows energy, enthusiasm and a passion for becoming the district’s next U.S. representative. He has studied the material, traveled the district and become conversant on the talking points he needs to sound like a serious candidate.
Strip away that veneer, however, and you come away with a paint-by-numbers conservative who signed the anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist “no tax increase” pledge. Mr. Plummer’s protest that he signed it only after his competitor had accused him of signing isn’t much of an explanation. Having run for lieutenant governor just two years ago, he remains more conversant with state issues than national.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn today made the following statement after the FutureGen Alliance announced that Morgan County has been chosen to host the FutureGen 2.0 carbon dioxide (CO2) storage site, visitor center, research, and training facilities. The FutureGen 2.0 project and pipeline network is expected to bring 1,000 jobs to downstate Illinois and another 1,000 jobs for suppliers across the state.
“Bringing together all the components of FutureGen 2.0 will be a boost for Morgan County and result in thousands of good-paying jobs,” said Durbin. “As host of the storage site, Morgan County will be on the map as a leader in clean coal research and technology attracting visitors from around the world. This $1 billion federal investment in Central Illinois will bring with it millions more in private investment. I am glad that FutureGen 2.0 remains on track and could break ground as soon as next year.”
“FutureGen 2.0 will ensure that Illinois continues to lead the nation and world in the development of clean energy, and today’s announcement represents a major step towards completing this historic project,” said Governor Quinn. “I congratulate Morgan County on being selected as the host community for the FutureGen 2.0 carbon storage facility. While only one Illinois location could be selected today, the entire state will benefit from the major federal investment and jobs that will be generated by this cutting-edge project.”

Shimkus will keep one good eye on things while Jason “plays” Congress, all the while Shimkus works in Congress for both districts and Illinois.
WHEW! We endorse Plummer because being one of 435, away from Illinois, we endorse that most of all. Shimkus wil have to be; babysitter, a true leader for Southern Illinois, and clean all of Jason’s messes, like Dad usually does,
Southern Illinois will be better with Jason gone.
We endorse John Shimkus for the 12th District too.

People in southern Illinois would tell you the reason it is the number one issue is because it ONLY employs 4400 people. I think some of us forgotten downstaters would politely ask that the environmentalist libs get out of the way and give us the opportunity to create jobs “down here” using some of the only resources that are available to us to do so.

Forgive my cynicism, but it often rises when I see Plummer’s name accompanied with “job creator.” What I have observed of the Plummer’s operations is that they buy existing lumberyards and incorporate them into their existing business. My assumption is that the individuals working in the yard and sales floor get to keep their jobs while the administrative jobs are eliminated because the existing Plummer organization can do them. To me it sounds like a net loss of jobs, not an increase. To say one creates jobs based upon their employment numbers while not netting them against what they have cannibalized in the process seems misleading to me.
Maybe I’m wrong because I’m one of those old fogies that doesn’t believe that the lottery helped educational funding either…sigh, the feeble mindedness of old age once again

Except that coal mining is so mechanized now that even huge increases in output won’t equal all that many jobs. I’ve documented this before.

Some of us “environmental libs” sure like to head “down there,” drop money, and enjoy the resources you have in the Shawnee National Forest, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refugee and state parks.
Many more would probably like to do so if they knew about it. You’re not a victim if you don’t market what you have. Wisconsin and Michigan sell themselves up here year round.
The leaf-peeping is just about done in Wisconsin and Michigan. I bet it’s hitting peak down in Shawnee right now. Lots of folks drop big money for that fall experience.
I bet the hunting, fishing and camping is good, too. But you gotta sell it in a competitive market.
Many of those “environmental libs” would be supportive of getting DNR back to where it should be. They learned to love the area when they were going to those state schools way down south in Edwardsville and Carbondale — resources you have that you might have forgotten about.
Personally, I support research into cleaning up high-sulfur coal. But I don’t want it burning down the street from my house. I doubt it you do, either.
You’re not forgotten down south, but you’re not victims, either. You gotta sell it.

Those writing for the Southern Illinois these days would be right at home at Fox News. Their endorsement for Romney was written in the “We Distort, You Comply” style. And to call coal the most important issue of the campaign really shows those folks to out of touch with reality. Which must make Fox viewers so proud. When people at the Southern Illinoisan and washed up politicians who try to stay relevant by pandering to old school themes begin to realize that coal is so 20th Century, maybe this region will start to move forward. Try to find one retired coal miner who wants his grand kids to follow his footsteps into the mines. I think it’s impossible.

Agree with wordslinger. Southern Illinois could be a great tourist destination.
But, they aren’t going to appeal to Illinois’ large population center by resenting the Chicago region (the taxbase that supports them) or by threatening to secede. I know a lot of people who are afraid to go down to southern Illinois.

Me Thinks whatever you think about me, Jason IS Jason … that doesn’t change.
The hubris of a kid, who thought interships and Dad’s resume building is a match to anyone’s real life, honest experiece … and then NOT learning one thing from losing LG, and claiming to be so transparent, that he won’t release tax returns … yeah, Jason gets all he gets.

“Navy intelligence officer” is starting to look like a title handed-out to rich, connected Republicans.
Plummer has less days on active duty than a seaman recruit has at the end of boot camp.
I’ll wager Paula Bradshaw, the Green Party nominee, would do better on a test about the U.S. military and its history.
It’s open to question why the U.S. Navy has reserve intelligence officers.
The defense of this community is that having multiple agencies review the data gives the national command authority (the President) multiple perspectives.
However, in practice, having 20+ intelligence agencies reviewing the same data also gives the President an increasing number of wrong options to choose from.
So, putting money into the U.S. Navy reserve intelligence community is part of an intelligence system that produces inferior intelligence analysis and decision making.
The whole U.S. Navy intelligence community may be a complete waste of money. And it especially starts to look this way when its seeded with political hacks, like Plummer, who nobody believes is particularly bright.
And if Plummer loses enough elections that he quits politics, it seems likely he’ll quit the Navy Reserves too.
Joel Pollack’s wife joined the Navy reserves when her husband was running for Congress. Did she finish her enlistment once Pollack got out of politics? Is she planning on re-enlisting?

Southern Illinois is a great tourist destination. And I’ve never had a problem with the folks down there, and I’m as Yankee as they come.
The folks who routinely drive hours north in the summer could be persuaded to drive south in spring and fall with a decent sustained marketing campaign.
That’s why the state’s “Illinois. Mile after Magnificent Mile” campaign drives me nuts. You can’t really shop the Mag Mile during the day and enjoy a class of wine at a Southern Illinois B&B at night. A universal TV spot doesn’t work.
You have to tout the state’s regional and seasonal offerings, like Michigan does.

I lived in Southern Illinois and was proud to have Glenn Poshard as my Congressman. I moved away around the time he ran for Governor. It would seem to me that the region should aim to have someone like Poshard as its Rep, and that a responsible editorial board would cast off partisanship and run screaming from a neophyte nincompoop like Plummer. The guy has zero experience in anything and it shows whenever he opens his mouth. Sheesh.
The SI endorsement essentially says they like Plummer because he will do what he is told. How does that help the area?

I didn’t write the “endorsement”, but I can read what the Southern Illinioian is saying … “For the 19th District, we endorse Shimkus … for the 12th District, we endorse Shimkus, um, we mean Plummer, with parental supervision of Shimkus …

Let’s not forget the other jobs increased coal mining and output produces:
1. More coal mining jobs.
2. More transportation jobs. Coal must be transported via rail, truck or barge.
3. More energy production jobs, which would also result in more initial construction jobs and more engineering and environmental consulting jobs.
4. More nearby jobs in areas that support coal mines.
The mine in Galatia alone employs 1,000+ people. Prairie State Energy Campus employs 500-1,000 people. Imagine an additional employer/site of each size. That’s a pretty good get.

I am one of those big city liberals, but my grandfather was a coal miner in western Ky. So here’s my take.
Coal mining is filthy work. Dangerous too. Will the union be allowed in? If not, it’s dirty and dangerous and you will be paid much less than the job is worth.
Who will buy the coal? I don’t want coal burning plants anywhere near me. A lot of people feel the same way.
How much coal is down there that is feasible to get out of the ground? There are *no* jobs left where my grandfather used to work. So we could be talking about jobs for a generation, with luck a generation and a half.
I agree with Word Slinger–Southern Illinois is beautiful and the state does a great disservice to the area by not marketing it correctly.

First, many non-union coal miners in Illinois make as much or more than UMWA members. Also, even big bad Bob Murray has allowed UMWA to come in and take votes to unionize his employees and the votes have failed. In Galatia. Peabody’s mines are also mostly non-union.
Second, coal-fired generation plants can pipe energy onto the grid from anywhere. There is an abundance of land in southern Illinois that can be used for a large coal-fired plant. The construction jobs to build those plants pay very well. Many of the people who operate the plants are also paid very well.
Do people think energy just happens? I’m not trying to be funny, either. It has to be generated somehow. Right now, the only real viable options are coal, nuclear, CNG and combined green energy. Green energy can be efficient but many sources are not as reliable as coal or CNG. Please note that I did not indicate coal or CNG is cleaner than green energy sources. However, there is enough technology that allows power plant owners and operators to trap carbon and other emitants. As an incentive, it would only take legislation and agency cooperation to ensure companies can afford scrubbers and storage systems that will be used to keep consumers safe.

Actually, coal is a silly issue to base support for Plummer on because Enyart will promote coal as strongly as Plummer. If your district has as many mines and as much coal as Southern Illinois, how could it be otherwise?

Sorry but coal is even more an economic disaster than environmental! The reason that coal is not being used for new electrical generation is economic. Natural gas is now almost 30% cheaper per btu and 50% cheaper to transport! It’s not the EPA that is killing coal, it’s cheap natural gas and this won’t change for about 25 years at current pace and consumption. The only rationale for coal, and its keep ing production levels in costal areas high, are exports! China is buying cheap low sulphur coal at record levels…….Jason Plummer won’t have much he can do about this trend. Unless he wants” pick winners and losers” and subsidize cheap coal for Mitt’s factories in China……

Willie, all due respect, with that cast, with that director, and with that script, that ain’t a “cult classic,” it’s just classic old school Hollywood, when movies were made for grownups.
Love the Duke. Love Kirk Douglas. Love Patricia Neal. Love Henry Fonda.
As this is a political blog, I find the politics of those folks revealing and inspiring.
Wayne was an Iowa-boy via USC Taft-man who called Ike a Red.
Douglas was an a first-generation, Russian Jew, New York lefty who broke the blacklist by crediting Dalton Trumbo on “Spartacus.”
Somehow, they could get together to make a movie and make a buck. Who knew?
The Greatest Movie Never Made was a feature of “Lonesome Done,” featuring Wayne as Woodrow Call, Jimmy Stewart as Gus McCrae and Fonda as Jake Spoon.
Larry McMurtry started the story as a treatment, and had Wayne, Stewart and Fonda lined up, with Peter Bogandovich directing.
But Wayne got bogged down in producing, directing and starring (and losing a fortune) in “The Green Berets,” and it fell apart.
McMurtry took back the treatment, and wrote the Pulitzer-winning novel, instead. Later, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall knocked it out of the park in the mini-series.
Wayne, Stewart and Fonda were the best of friends back in the day. Wayne was to the right of Attila the Hun. Stewart was an old Cally conservative. And Fonda was the first of the red-hot liberals.
Yet somehow they were friends and respected each other, for decades.
When Wayne was on his deathbed at Cedars-Sinai in LA, Fonda slugged a hospital guard who wouldn’t let him in to see his friend off. Stewart smoothed it over with the authorities (”ah, ah, it’s alright, you see, they’re pals..)
Politics is secondary in the great scheme of things.

Presuming I’m a bit younger than Willy, but when I saw Failsafe, I was like, Hagman can actually act. Dang–I’d only seen him in I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas before that.

Wasn’t there a time in the ILGA, that the statement you just said about those American …ICONS … use to be said about members of both chambers, and both caucuses … and which led to better government?
Movies and Politcs … all you need is a Drinks, 5 course meal, coffee or cappucino and dessert …then you got a heck of an evening, with the right company who enjoy the discussion and the stories and not all the talking points.

How about the cutoff being “Carson, Letterman”, not “Leno, Conan” … That seems to be a good watermark.
What the heck do I know …I think Jason Plummer could “…match my leadership and (his) executive experience up to most anybody’s.”
So I might not be the best at anything dealing with, … age … experience … all that “stuff… and stuff.”

Wow, came here to read thoughts on the congressional races, wound up enjoying a conversation that started with a back and forth about In Harm’s Way, which is one of my favorite movies. Now I have some new flicks to check out.
So has anyone ever heard the tale of Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda getting drunk, talking about politics, getting into a fistfight, and resolving to avoid talking politics ever again? Classic stuff.

The Southern’s summation that Plummer would become a leader eventually while comparing him to Gen. Enyart is like playing 7-card draw. You’ve got a full house in Gen. Enyart and Plummer is a duece. Do you throw away the full house hoping Plummer becomes 4-of-a-kind? I wouldn’t take that bet. Maybe the editors at The Southern don’t play a lot of poker. They certainly aren’t reading the odds.
